I’m sure we are all looking forward to bright, cheerful, uplifting days that come with the Lenten season. This Lenten season of- fers an opportunity for penitence, renewal, faith and hope. Family Night Dinner—Helen and Phin Wood will present a program titled, "America the Beautiful". March 5th is Ash Wednesday. It is also the night for our Family Night Dinner. We will do both. First we will enjoy a delicious meal prepared by our UMM and then move into the Sanctuary for Ash Wednesday Service. Dinner is at 6:00 pm. The meal will be baked ziti with salad and bread. There will be assorted desserts to go with it. The Ash Wednesday Service is at 7:00 pm. As you all know Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the Lenten Season. It is a time of reflection and prayer. Please make your reservations for dinner in the usual way: fill out the gold slip the Sunday prior to the dinner. If for some reason you need to cancel or make additional reservations, call the church office by noon on Monday. Blessings and love you all. Grace upon grace, Martha Sherrod.Senior Connections—Senior Connection to Sponsor Magazine ExchangeBeginning February 16th, the Senior Connection will host a magazine exchange on the stage in Barton Heights Hall. Members of the church
are invited to bring "gently used" magazines to share with others. This is a wonderful opportunity to pass on reading material that you are finished with, but do not want to just pitch in the trash. If this proves to be successful, it will become an on-going event. So round up those interesting magazines and come on over to see what is up for grabs! Why not bring them on Sunday morning and stay for Sunday School at 9:45? Also, The Seniors will meet Thursday, March 13. Our speaker will be Edward F. Ansello, PhD, Director Virginia Center on Aging. The title of his presentation is, “ All You Need to Know About Aging” Come, learn from Ed. We will meet at noon. Bring a delicious covered dish with enough to share. All our programs are open to everyone, not just Seniors, so come and bring a friend and enjoy the fellowship of this group.

The Honor Flight network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s veter-ans for all their sacrifices. Veterans are transported to Washington, DC to visit and reflect at their memorials. On the flight home, each veteran receives a packet of mail during “Mail Call.” A friend in Illinois requested that I write a note or card thanking her friend, Walt Lane, who has been chosen for the trip. Walt served in the Navy in WWII and is now in his 90’s. He has limited sight, so please use large print in writing. They also welcome cards not addressed to a specific person, so you may want to include an extra note to “Veteran.”
There will be a box in the narthex to receive your cards and letters. Deadline for submitting cards, notes and/or letters is MARCH 16. For additional information, call Pat Brodie at 266-3070 or go to the website, www.honorflight.org.

REPORT OF 2013 MISSION FINANCES:
During the 2013 church year, you offered gifts through our mission program for distribution to designated mission partners for a total of $3,660.50. In a separate account which holds gifts that have not been designated to a specific mission partner, entitled “Feed My Sheep,” you gave $3,225.58 in 2013. The total for both accounts: $6,886.08.
The Outreach/Missions Committee met in January to distribute these funds. Below is a report of how our gifts were distributed:
Be on the lookout for a booklet published by the Outreach/Missions Committee which contains reflections on selected scriptures for your meditation each Wednesday during Lent beginning with Ash Wednesday, March 5. You will also be interested in reading the descriptions in the booklet about some of the mission partners we support around the world. Please notice the estimate of giving section in the back of the booklet for your input as we ask you to indicate to the committee how you plan to support these programs throughout the year. This is the only campaign the committee intends to promote, so your pledge will be helpful to us in determining how we much we can be involved in sharing our bounty.

History of Hymns: 'Lift Every Voice and Sing' DALLAS (UMNS) – What began as a hastily-written composition for an unassuming school assembly in 1900 has become known as the African-American national anthem. C. Michael Hawn of Southern Methodist University's Perkins School of Theology shares the story of American civil rights pioneer James Weldon Johnson, his brother J. Rosamund Johnson and their most famous composition, "Lift Every Voice and Sing."
United Methodists bridging global religious divide WASHINGTON (UMNS) – Whether engaged in peace-building, social justice programs or interfaith dialogue, United Methodists around the world are increasingly open to those of other faith traditions, according to a survey of bishops from Africa, Europe and the Philippines.
Lesson from Lois: Be part of the struggle NEW YORK (UMNS) – Kelly Martini recalls the late Lois M. Dauway as "a fascinating book of stories and lessons that taught me, a 20-something, to think bigger than myself. If you took my relationship and multiplied it by thousands, I’m sure you’d discover a small percent of people she touched.” Dauway, a former staffer with United Methodist Women, the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries and the National Council of Churches, died Feb. 4.

Five pastors from China to study at WesleyWASHINGTON (UMNS) – On Feb. 4, five of the leading Christian pastors in Beijing arrived at United Methodist-related Wesley Theological Seminary to complete a semester of intensive study. “This is important for both Wesley Theological Seminary and for the Christian church in China,” says the Rev. Kyunglim Shin Lee, Wesley’s vice president of international relations.
Better than chocolate: A vow renewedPALM COAST, Fla. (UMNS) – Palm Coast United Methodist Church is among the Florida congregations spreading a message that expressions of love should not be reduced to just heart-shaped boxes of treats on Valentine’s Day. The church hosts an annual renewal-of-marriage vows for couples. It is not alone, reports Kathy Steele for the Florida Annual (regional) Conference.

COMMUNITY LENTEN SERVICES: “From the Cross of Christ”
Trinity Presbyterian Church, 113 Wilkinson Rd, invite you to share in the presentation of the Lenten-Easter Message, Wednesdays during Lent. The services will begin on Ash Wednesday, March 5th and continue through Wednesday of Holy Week – April 16th. Lunch @12 noon, Lenten worship @12:30pm, and a second lunch @ 1pm.
Easter Egg Time
As I write this it looks like it might start snowing at any minute, but the Easter Bunny knows it is time to think about Easter eggs. Our four flavors and price ($5 per 1/2 lb. egg) are the same a last year. Schedule: March 9- March 30 - orders taken; April 6 - set up after worship service; April 7- mix and mold; April 8 - dip and decorate; April 9 - pack and sort. Pickup April 9 (3-7 pm), Sat. April 12 (10-11 am) & Wed. April 16 (6:30 -7 pm). Please remember that lots of hands are needed. There is a job everyone can do and it's lots of fun too. Come early and bring a sandwich or just drop in for whatever time you can work. Get your orders in early to be sure you get the flavors you want.

CARITAS EVENT
"CARITAS would love to thank Chamberlayne Heights UMC for hosting one of our spring Congrega-tional Forums. CARITAS gathering CARITAS key volunteers from the over 170 CARITAS Congrega-tions for an opportunity to exchange ideas about their host weeks, so that we can better serve our most vulnerable neighbors. Chamberlayne Heights UMC is one of four congregations hosting these forums. CARITAS staff will also provide some education about homelessness in Richmond and the critical role that area congregations play in providing lasting solutions."
The purpose of these gatherings will be:
To offer congregations an opportunity to exchange ideas, so that newer key volunteers can learn from more experienced volunteers.
To give an update about what is going on at CARITAS with our 4 CARITAS Programs.
To provide more information about how we are doing as a community in breaking the cycles of homelessness and addiction.
