Assuring foodandnutritionsecurity isgenerally regardedasoneof thekeyglobalchallengesfor the 21st century. Population growth, climate and environmental change and technologydevelopmentwill all interact to determine how our various nationswill assure an adequatefood supply to the citizens of the Americas. Equally important will be national agriculturalpolicies, land use patterns, market systems and systems of infrastructure. These policydependentparametersaresetbynationalgovernmentsandstateswithinnations.Theaimof thisproject is toassess theoutlook for foodandnutritionsecurity (FNS)over thenextfiftyyearswithintheAmericas,withthegoalofinformingnationalpolicymakersofcriticalissuesandpotentialoptionsforeachmajorcountryoftheAmericas.The project is being implemented by the national science academies of the Americanhemisphere through the Inter-American Network of Academies of Sciences (IANAS) withfinancial support from the German National Academy of Sciences-Leopoldina, the GermanGovernment (Ministry of Education) and the Global Network of Science Academies (IAP-Science).ParallelprojectsarealsounderwayfortheEuropean,AsianandAfricanNetworksofScienceAcademies.Expertsfrom21countriesoftheAmericaswillbemeetinginLima,Perutoassessofthefoodand nutrition security challenge in the hemisphere for the next fifty years. Themeetingwillculminateinavolumeofcountryassessmentsthatwillbepublishedattheendof2017.Theorganization isverygratefulwiththehospitalityandsupportof theNationalAcademyofSciencesofPeru.

Battle Professor ofChemical Ecology at the University of Western Ontario. He has an interdisciplinaryresearch programme in chemical ecology, has published>200 scientific papers andtrained>50graduatestudents.Hehasreceivedanumberofnationalandinternationalawards for his research, including the GoldMedal from the Entomological Society of

CarlosMuñoz-SchickisaChileanscientist.Hecompletedhisundergraduatestudiesatthe University of Chile, where he received a degree in Agricultural Engineering in1971.
