Dear Friends, As Pesach approaches, we wanted to send you the following information regarding its traditional observance. This year the first Seder of Pesach is on Friday evening, April 3rd. We hope you will join us at our annual community Seder that evening at 6:00pm. You can RSVP at www.templebethdavidfl.org/passover. The second Seder is on Saturday evening, April 4th. Here are some helpful hints regarding traditional Passover preparations. If you have any specific questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at [email protected], [email protected] or 561-694-2350.

ChametzChametz is leaven from one of the five species listed in the Torah: wheat, oats, rye, spelt, and barley. If one of these five grains is in contact with water for more than 18 minutes, it becomes “chametz.” Matza is not chametz because it is finished baking within 18 minutes after it is mixed with water; hence it does not have the time to rise. We are forbidden to have chametz in our homes or in our possession during Passover. The rabbis say that the puffed up chametz symbolizes our “puffed up” egos; in addition to striving to rid ourselves of the physical substance of chametz, we are encouraged to work to rid ourselves of “spiritual chametz” as well, to get rid of our sense of self-importance, to reduce our egos.

The rules about chametz are very stringent: according to the Torah, you are not allowed to eat, or even own ANY chametz over Passover.

The first step in getting rid of your chametz is to do a thorough spring cleaning. Don’t forget your car, especially if you have kids who eat cookies and crackers in the car.

People go to different degrees of craziness in preparing their kitchens for Passover. Many people use separate dishes that are only used for Passover that have never been used with chametz. Others make sure to kasher, with boiling water, silverware and pots and pans they want to use during Passover. I know one rabbi who claims to have his kitchen ready for Passover with 30 minutes of cleaning. In my own home I think it takes me more than 3 hours, and I know lots of people who are crazier than me.

Mechirat Chametz (selling your chametz). Any chametz you want to keep and use after Passover can be put in a box or bag and put in a special, separate location, like in a closet, a storage shed, etc. Because Jews aren’t supposed to own any chametz over Passover, it is customary to sell whatever chametz you put aside to someone who isn’t Jewish. I can act as your “agent” to sell your chametz. you can sell your chametz on our website at www.templebethdavidfl.org/passover. Please note that alcohol made from one of the five species is chametz, and needs to be set aside during Passover. No beer and no Scotch during Pesach! In order for me to sell your chametz I need your information by 8am on the morning of the first seder (Friday, April 3rd). Your chametz will not belong to you until the conclusion of Pesach on Saturday night, April 11th.

Bedikat Chametz (the search for chametz). Once your house is ready, the next step is “bedikat chametz,” the search for chametz. On the night before the seder, it’s fun to make a ceremonial search for any leftover chametz. The search is traditionally made with a candle, feather, and wooden spoon. If you are an iPhone user, there’s even an app called “No Chametz” to help you out with your search. Here is the blessing associated with the search:

Ta’anit B’chorim, the fast of the firstborn, is held on Erev Pesach, this year on Friday, April 3rd. The first born in each family, adult or child, traditionally fasts as a symbolic reminder of the last of the ten plagues, which caused the ancient Pharaoh of Egypt to let the Israelite slaves go free. It is customary, after Shacharit, the morning service, to have a siyum, completion of study of a tractate of rabbinic literature, following which there is a seudat mitzvah, a meal accompanying the performance of a mitzvah, here the completion of study. This siyum cancels the fast day for all who participate. Our siyum at TBD will be held in the Rapaport Chapel as part of a special morning service, which begins at 8:00am.

Biur and Bitul Chametz. On the morning of the first seder, we have the ceremonies of “biur chametz” and “bitul chametz,” burning your chametz and nullifying your chametz. Your Haggadah will have all the nitty gritty but basically, we burn the chametz we found in our search for chametz the night before, and we recite a formula renouncing ownership in any chametz that might be remaining in our possession after we’ve gone through all that. Here’s that formula:

“All chametz or leaven in my possession that I have seen and that I have not seen, that I have destroyed and that I have not destroyed, shall be nullified and become ownerless, like the dust of the earth”.

You may eat chametz up until 10am the day of the seder. Just take care not to mess up your house which you have gone to such effort to prepare. So that the taste of matzah is fresh in our mouths at the seder, many people refrain from eating matzah throughout the day prior to the 1st seder. Fruits, vegetables, cheese, eggs, etc. are delicious and perfect for noshing on erev Pesach.

Pesach T’filot, Passover services, are held on the mornings of the first two days and the evenings and mornings of the last two days of Pesach. Morning services will be held on Saturday, April 4; Sunday, April 5; Friday, April 10th and Saturday, April 11th at 9:15am. Yizkor, the memorial service, will be recited on Saturday, April 11th. Evening services on Friday, April 3rd, Thursday, April 9th and Friday, April 10 will begin at 6:30pm.

If you would like more detailed information about Passover and its preparations, I invite you to download the Pesach Guide of the Rabbinical Assembly (the Conservative movement’s Rabbinical association.) You can download the guide here www.rabbinicalassembly.org.

As we all begin the yearly search for our own mitzrayim, our own narrow places, may we strive to fulfill the direction, chayav adam lir’ot et atzmo k’ilu hu yatzah mi’mitzrayim, each person should feel as if he or she has personally escaped his or her own narrow places. We wish you all a chag kasher v’sameach, a kosher and happy holiday.

From the Preschool director…Bobbi Sadow Our annual Grandparent’s and Special Friend’s Shabbat was once again a huge success. All of the Preschoolers created beautiful gifts to present to their loved ones. The children sang love songs and shared a wonderful Shabbat program with their special visitors. Summer Camp and Preschool registration forms have been distributed. Our amazing camp staff is busy creating fun themes and activities for the children. All Camp and Preschool forms are to be submitted in person to the Temple office. Should you know someone who might be interested in our wonderful preschool or summer camp, please let me know and I will be happy to get into contact with them and schedule a tour. The Preschool will celebrate Passover with a family Seder. The Rabbi and Cantor will tell the story of Passover and the children are learning all of the Passover songs. The Preschool

will be closed for Pesach observance from Friday, April 3rd, through Friday, April 10th. Upon our return, we will jump right into preparing for our annual Mother’s Day Breakfast and the celebration of Yom Ha’Atzmaut, Israeli Independence Day. All are welcome at our Friday morning Shabbat program from 9:15am-9:45am. It is a wonderful experience for all who attend. Seeing the children sitting in the Sanctuary every Friday morning participating in Shabbat services certainly reaffirms the children’s sense of ownership of their spiritual home. Please feel free to stop by or email me at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns.

dirECTOr OF CONGrEGaTiONaL LEarNiNG March and April are auspicious months this year. We begin with Purim – that holiday of fun, silliness, and of course food. Despite its sense of frivolity, Purim is actually a very serious holiday. It commemorates the time when the Jewish people faced extinction. According to Midrash, when the Messianic Age begins, all the holidays will be annulled except for Purim. Why is this? Well, let’s think about the story and its significance. Here we have a tale about a threat to a people’s survival with a happy ending – at least for the Jews. It’s a story of overcoming obstacles. It’s a lesson about community. Faced with an external threat, the Jewish community united in prayer and in self-defense. Instead of individuals worrying about their own well being they all came together and become stronger. The story of Purim is the story of the Jewish people throughout history. Whenever we have faced communal obstacles, we have always managed to survive. We’ve suffered tremendous losses, but we are still here, while those who would exterminate us have disappeared. So we celebrate.

This year we begin our Purim festivities at TBD, on Wednesday, March 4th at 5:30 pm when we will have a family celebration with a costume parade and contest, Purim Pizza, culminating in our Purim spiel “Les Mordecai”. But the fun doesn’t end there. On Friday afternoon, starting at 2:30 for preschoolers, and 3:30 for everyone else, we all will gather at the Mandel JCC and Meyer Academy for the first “One Big Purim Community Carnival”. This will be an afternoon of fun, excitement and celebration. Go to our website at http://www.templebethdavidfl.org/purim.html for more information. But, that’s just March. April continues the historical themes. We begin by commemorating our transformation from slavery to freedom at our Passover seder. We continue this month of history with Yom HaShoah, when we remember those we lost during the Holocaust. At TBD we will be continuing our tradition of reading names to honor our martyrs. Of course of this sadness comes our celebration of Israel Independence Day – Yom HaAtzmaut. We will be joining with the entire Jewish community on April 26 to as we commemorate our connection with Israel. Details will be coming shortly. Spring is a time of rebirth. Not just for nature, but also for the Jewish people. The next few months will be filled with joyful (mostly) reminders of our people’s history and future.

The Gerald & Ingrid rosenthal and marian & Irving Wiseman educational pavillion News

dirECTOr OF CONGrEGaTiONaL LEarNiNG March and April are auspicious months this year.
