. . .KIDS CORNER...Handprint Cherry/Almond Blossom TreeWhat better way to learn about our valley than to take a trip to one of the many orchards and check out the beautiful blooms! Then come home and can create your own blooming tree! Supplies:-Q-Tips-Various Shades of Pink/White Craft Paint-Light Blue/Brown Cardstock-Paper plate-Scissors-Pencil-Glue Stick-*Optional*- scrapbook stickers/bird embellishment

Directions:-First trace and trim out your child's handprint/arm out of the brown cardstock. This is the start of the

cherry blossom tree.-Grab your glue stick and glue that cutout to the center of your light blue cardstock.-Grab your craft paint and squirt it on the paper plate. Have your child take a q-tip, dip it into the paint, then onto the branches of their "handprint" tree. Repeat until your cherry blossom tree is nice and full.-To finish off the tree, add other embellishments you see fit, like a bird sticker, and set aside to let it dry completely before displaying proudly.

Nature Craft Journey StickWith our awesome Spring weather, it's the perfect chance to get outside and explore our local parks. A nature stick is a memento from a nature walk. You collect items while out on your walk and attach them to a stick with string. Younger children can use a piece of cardboard with double sided tape. With all nature activities, you must be mindful of taking care of your surroundings, making sure to explain this to children. Look for park rangers to help you identify what you've found, or you can continue the learning at home by exploring the internet together to find out more about your findings. Happy Exploring.

Want to have take a trip over spring break but not sure what services there are to make your trip with a loved one with Down syndrome a success? There are actually so many places that offer different types of services for people with disabilities and their families. I've gone ahead and collected a few different types of trips your family could take that are located within driving distance. Yosemite National Park• Yosemite National Park is very accessible to people

with disabilities. The park has won these Accessibility Awards: 2010 National Park Service Sustained Park Achievement – Provision and Improvement of Accessibility over a Sustained Period of Time, 2009 National Park Service National Accessibility Achievement Award for Programmatic Achievement – Improving Access to the National Park Service Programs and 2008 Programmatic Accessibility Achievement Award – Deaf Services Program.

• As we know, Down syndrome is a disability that doesn't go away, so it's considered a permanent disability. This makes your loved one with Down syndrome eligible to be the owner of the Interagency Access Pass. This pass is a FREE lifetime pass that is valid at National Parks, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Reclamation sites. In Yosemite, this pass will allow the pass owner and anyone in the same vehicle free access to the park and a 50% discount on campsites! You can get this pass online for a small fee or you can easily head over to the Sequoia National Park Headquarters in Clovis to get pick it up for free. Call ahead to make sure they're open and check if you need any proof of a permanent Disability. It took me five minutes and they gave my kids lots of fun National Park education coloring books and toys. Who doesn't love Smokey the Bear!?

• Check out their Accessibility guide at www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/upload/access.pdf to see how your loved one can be accommodated.

Disneyland Resort• Disneyland is so accommodating to their guests with

disabilities. There is no one way to explain how amazing their cast members are and how they can help design your trip. Each trip is specifically designed for each guest in need. No two services are exact. When you get to the park, (hopefully an hour before to make your way through security and, the kiosk lines) make a bee line for city hall and make sure to have your loved one with you. Explain why you think your loved one would need to use their Disability Access Service (DAS). They have so many different services that can accommodate anyone's needs. The cast member will help you design a service that can help make your family have a "Magical" day! The design you come up

with may not actually work for your family, but have no fear! You can head back to City Hall and let them know how the service isn't working as planned, and they can help customize it a little differently. They really are there to help your family have the best day and so many cast members do their job so well! Did I mention that the DAS can be used along with a FASTPASS?! Well...it CAN!!!

• Speak to your case manager at CVRC to see how your family can be entered in the lottery for discounted Disneyland Resort tickets. This program is ran by Disneyland Resort, CVRC simply verifies that an individual is a Regional Center client which makes them eligible for the lottery.

• Check out Disneyland Resort services at https://disneyland.disney.go.com/guest-services/guests-with-disabilities/

San Diego Zoo• This zoo has SO many different services available to

guests with disabilities. I haven't actually used this service, but I really would love to make a trip there!

• There are no discounted rates for people with disabilities, BUT they do give free admission to a personal attendant/caregiver to accompany a guest who requires help to access the different programs, activities and facilities.

• There is also a free shuttle service available for guests with limited mobility.

• You can check out other services they offer at http://zoo.sandiegozoo.org/content/guests-disabilities

Local Movie Theaters• Many theaters are now offering Sensory friendly viewing

for movies. These showings typically have lower volumes, brighter lights and usually filled with families who are more forgiving because they understand different needs. Usually there is one showing on a specific day of the month that these are offered.

• Edwards Fresno• My Way Matinee. The showings are at 10:30AM.

Ticket Prices are $6.50• March 11th- The Lego Batman Movie• April 8th- The Boss Baby• http://www.regmovies.com/mywaymatinee

• Sierra Vista Cinemas• Sensory Sensitive Films. The showings are at 10AM

on the last Saturday of the month. Ticket prices are $7.75

• March 25th- Rock Dog• April 29th- Smurfs: The Lost Village• http://www.sregmovies.com/loc_sierravista

• Maya Cinemas Fresno• Maya Cares. The showings are at 10:30AM on the

first Saturday of the month. Guests with disabilities are free and the cost is $3 for each member of the party.

• The movies that will show will be announced on their Facebook page about one to two weeks prior to the show.

Do you have your DSACC socks yet?

NDSS visits DSA Central CA!Thank you to everyone who came out to welcome Sara Weir, NDSS President and her staff, on February 15, 2017 in Visalia and February 16, 2017 in Fresno. Weir stopped by to speak with us about the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act which was passed in 2014 and accounts will be available in California as early as this October! Weir brought great insight to how this bill was created (it started with 5 parents sitting around a table wanting to set up better futures for their children with Down syndrome) and the limitations and benefits of opening an account. More information about the ABLE Act will be published in our next newsletter so stay tuned!

......................
