March‟s meeting found the NEO Jammers short a few members because some had taken advantage of the opportunity for creative play at the Las Vegas Face and Body Painting Conven- tion. Though we missed our frolicking associates, we continued on business as usually and envy at bay...for a while. During this months meeting we went through a formal read through of the re- vamped and reformulated Guild Bylaws in preparation for April‟s vote. For those of you who weren‟t able to attend, a copy of the bylaws, with the changes discussed at the meeting, will be emailed to you for your perusal. As I stated above, we will be voting on the bylaws as well as the officers and logo at the beginning of the April meeting, so be sure to take some time to familiarize yourself with them. The submitted designs will be placed on a ballot for voting at the meeting as well. March‟s meeting found the NEO Jammers short a few members because some had taken

advantage of the opportunity for creative play at the Las Vegas Face and Body Painting Conven-

tion. Though we missed our frolicking associates, we continued on business as usually and envy at

bay...for a while. During this months meeting we went through a formal read through of the re-

vamped and reformulated Guild Bylaws in preparation for April‟s vote. For those of you who weren‟t

able to attend, a copy of the bylaws, with the changes discussed at the meeting, will be emailed to

you for your perusal. As I stated above, we will be voting on the bylaws as well as the officers and

logo at the beginning of the April meeting, so be sure to take some time to familiarize yourself with

them.

Once we were done with the bylaws, we had a brief discussion about the submitted Logo designs

that various members came up with. The submitted designs will be placed on a ballot for voting at

the meeting as well. In the interest of inclusion, all of the designs that were submitted have been in-

cluded, we just ask that members consider your options carefully; it will be the Guild‟s stamp of iden-

tity.

When we had all of the pesky business stuff out of the way, we shared our inspiration challenge de-

signs and then painted A LOT of patrons! The general consensus is that this month‟s jam session was

pretty darned fantastic and fun! We were entertained by a variety of different children (and par-

ATTENTION MEMBERS:

Potential Workshop Opportunities and Update!

As I wrote in the January-February Newsletter, we are in talks with Pashur and Kerry Ann Smith

about having a workshop in the Cleveland area. Well, as of this moment, Pashur has asked

us to host him for a Cleveland workshop on June 6th! While the location is still to be deter-

mined, Pashur has revamped his class offerings to create a interesting blended class just for us!

In the short amount of time I had, I was able to poll five of our members and give Pashur a list

of our face/body painting desires...and I think he’s ready to deliver! See the back for class de-

tails. Please note: Pashur lists his classes publically, so if you want a seat (the seats are generally

limited to a maximum of 12 students) don’t wait till the last minute to reserve your place!

We are still trying to work something out with Kerry Ann Smith. Since the Columbus Guild is

also interested in having Kerry Ann teach, we are looking at a collaborative effort in pulling this

off. What this means is that we may have to hold the class at a venue that will require drive time

and if she gives a two day workshop, a hotel stay. More to come as the situation develops.

I can’t stress enough how much of a huge undertaking all of this is and how fortunate we are to

have instructors willing to come to Cleveland despite the fact that it’s in no way, shape or form a

hub for face and body art. I truly believe that these events could be foundational milestones

towards putting Cleveland on the face and body art map!

April‟s meeting will (hopefully) be the last “business first” meeting for our group. We

will open the meeting with the traditional meet and greet but afterwards we be casting our

votes for the new bylaws. We won‟t be reading the bylaws again but everyone will have

received a copy of them to peruse in the weeks before the meeting. Once the bylaws are

voted in, we will officially become the NEO Face Painters Guild!

Along with the voting in of the bylaws will be the voting in of the guild officers. You will also

receive a preliminary ballot in the coming days. The ballot will list the nominated persons as

well as a place for a write in candidate. The duties of each officer is listed in the bylaws and

should be considered carefully when nominating someone. Nobody will be forced to hold

an office against their will, I promise. Each candidate will be asked to accept the nomina-

tion before they are put on the final ballot.

Another piece of business that will be addressed is that of the new Guild Logo. As you know,

a call was put out for design input for our new logo. To date, several cool designs have been

presented but there‟s always room for more! All of the designs will be listed on a separate

ballot and voted in at the meeting. Keep in mind, this logo will be our „brand identification”

for the time being and will be on any custom merchandise.

Following the voting, we will be sharing our Inspiration Challenge reveals! March‟s assign-

ment was “Not Another Butterfly”. Members are challenged to come up with 5 new butterfly

designs that force you to think outside your creative box. The designs should be something

that each person would add to their personal design offerings...which means they should

probably be executable in 3-8 minutes (not all venues require speedy painting after all)

Once the challenge stuff is out of the way, we will be given a quick demo of a „lacing‟

technique by Karen Fair . She swears it‟s as easy as pie… hmmm.

Once we get all of that out of the way, we will break out our paints and jam. If there aren‟t

any patrons to paint, we can just take advantage of the time to get some practice in that

our normally busy schedules don‟t usually allow.

On the agenda for this meeting:

5:00-5:45pm Meet and Greet, Eat

5:45-6:30pm Voting (Bylaws, Officers and Logo)

6:30-7:00pm Inspiration Challenge Reveals and Lace Demo

“In the Eyes of the Beholder”“In the Eyes of the Beholder”“In the Eyes of the Beholder”

This challenge is meant to challenge us to explore the way other artists inspire

our creativity and to take it one step further and express that inspiration.

Your assignment is to come up with design that is inspired by one of the indus-

try masters and create an homage piece that is inspired by the design. You

should do more that recreate the painter’s artwork, the goal is to teach yourself

to draw from inspiration and to meld it with who you are as a painter. It’s time

to take risks and drop kick your creative box folks!

March was the month for the FPBA Las Vegas Convention and while many desire to make the

long journey west to attend, only a handful can actually do that. As many of you know, our own Karen

Fair and Luise Easton got a chance to venture out to this year‟s convention while the rest of us were

braving the Cleveland winter weather. I recently got a chance to chat with the very ecstatic Karen

about her experience with the convention that is being called the west coast‟s version of FABAIC.

Her first impression when you arrived at the convention:

Karen didn‟t take any preclasses so she spent the first day in the Casino with her father who accompa-

nied her to Vegas. The convention was held on the second floor of Harrah‟s Hotel and Casino but due to

prior commitment, the floor was shared with another convention much to the chagrin of many atten-

dees found it cumbersome to maneuver around another convention. Plans are in work, however, to

ensure exclusivity for next year‟s convention. However, the shared floor did little to stifle the festive at-

mosphere of the event as Shonna Flannigan, Dustin Queary and other ballooning masters commenced

to transforming the floor into an inflatable wonderland for the convention.

Her favorite classes:

Karen set her focus on body painting for this convention and made it a point to mainly take classes with

instructors she‟d never had before. Among the many classes that she took, Karen has listed Mark Reid

and Lea Selley‟s Team Body Painting, Carolyn Roper‟s Painting for Competition, Emma Cammack‟s

Quick Painted Clothing, Vargas‟ Specialty Brushes, Dawn DeWitt‟s BIC Tattoos, Lea Selley‟s Webpage

Generation and Rebecca Tonkovich‟s Artybrush Body Cakes classes as her chosen favorites. Karen also

entered her name into a raffle for a chance for a one-on-one class with the instructor of her choice and

won a one-hour session with Shonna Flannigan of Adventure in Fun.

Karen wasn‟t able to take all the classes she wanted, including those pertaining to airbrushing and busi-

ness operations but she got to take plenty. While a few instructors she wanted to take classes from had

to cancel due to illness which forced the organizers to shift the class schedules around a bit, she still

managed to construct a very satisfying class schedule.

About the Vendor room:

The vendor room was not only limited in it‟s offerings, but also the number of different product vendors.

Australian born TAG didn‟t make an appearance at this convention but Vargas & Faketoos‟ Mark Gelter

was there to sell their wares . Though not a vendor, Rebecca, of Artybrush fame, showcased her new

body art cakes and revealed Artybrush‟s plans to redesign their product to resemble TAG‟s much more

useful (and economical) rectangular cakes in the near future.

The coolest thing about the convention:

Karen holds that, by far, the coolest event of the entire convention was the body painting competition

re-enactment exercise that the attendees participated in on the last day. The participating attendees

were put in teams of two to four members and each team was headed by one of the body painting

instructors who guided them through the execution of a full body design. The attendees got a chance

to work with an industry master and experience firsthand the competition atmosphere and the intrica-

cies involved in pulling a team together to achieve a shared goal. Karen was teamed up with Susan

Arita and lead by Dutch Bihary of Washington in the execution of a fantastic biomechanical beetle

piece.

Her least favorite thing about the convention:

Karen could only come up with three things that bothered her about the convention. 1. The limited offer-

ings in the vendor room, 2. The fact that the bathrooms were so far from the classrooms that taking a

tinkle break meant missing a significant amount of class, and 3. That the awards banquet/dinner (valued

at $75/plate for unregistered attendees) had a cash bar.

Was the convention worth the financial sacrifice?

In Karen‟ opinion, the convention is well worth the $225 registration and that‟s even for those who have

to fork out additional funds for airfare and hotel accommodations. Karen was able to get a flight/hotel

package deal by being willing to stay at a neighboring hotel, but if you‟re able to get room buddies, the

Harrah‟s $79-$99 convention rate isn‟t that big of a pill to swallow. As far as food went, not only were

there plenty of offering within walking distance from the convention but there were also several coupons

available to save the attendees money.

Karen’s recommendation:

Karen definitely recommends this convention, however, due to the expense of attending, agrees that

yearly attendance is probably not necessary.

January/February’s Inspiration Challenge Results January/February’s Inspiration Challenge Results

With February‟s meeting cancelled on account of Old Man Winter, the Jammers simply rolled over the assign inspiration challenge to

the March meeting. The theme of this challenge was “The Eyes Have It” and we were challenged to concoct an original eye design

that would be showcased at the meeting. Unfortunately, with light meeting attendance comes light reveal designs, but that didn‟t de-

tract from the creative awesomeness that was shared a single bit!

North East Ohio Face Painters

1. Amanda Destro shared her anticipatory spring themed floral eye design that she painted on herself during the jam.

2. Lori Jaryga also let a little springtime wish escape with her whimsical design that refused to kowtow to the weather outside.

I continue to hope that everyone will see the benefit of putting their creativity on trial at least once a month and completing the

posted challenges. It really is refreshing to challenge oneself and the growth that could come from that challenge is immeasur-

able! Be sure to check out the challenge for April...it‟s a real “stretcher”!

This challenge is meant to challenge us to leave the comfort of our routine and explore the pastures

of possibility...using butterflies.

Your assignment is to come up with 5 new butterfly designs that you can add to your design reper-

toire. Your creation can be a mixture of elements you’ve seen in other designs or even something

that you pull from the recesses of your creative psyche, it just has to be all about your growth as a

painter! The sky is totally the limit as you explore the different butterfly possibilities that escape us

when we’re busy painting at high tempo events. Who knows...maybe you’ll actually YEARN to do

butterflies once you’re done!

The mission of the North East Ohio Face Painters group is comprised of several important objectives:

To provide a means for which area face painters can meet in a non-competitive environment that facilitates not only

professional and person growth, but camaraderie as well.

To bring awareness of professional face painters to N.E. Ohio. It is through this awareness that what we have to offer will

evolve from being a perceived value to a realized one.

To enable a better system of networking through awareness of other face painters in our area.

To uphold a standard of material safety and professional business practices.

And most importantly, to provide a way for painters to have FUN without worrying about line control, time constraints or

weird painting requests...okay...maybe not so much the weird requests.
