synopsis

From Cannes and Telluride nominee Ewa Banaszkiewicz and Mateusz Dymek comes a fiction film that takes the form of a first-time filmmaker’s documentary.

My Friend The Polish Girl borrows from cinema verite and video blog-gers to create a rare naturalism in style and performance. The fiction film watches as an experimental documentary told through the eyes (and lens) of amateur filmmaker Katie: an American rich kidfollowing Alicja, an er-ratic unemployed Polish actress. Set in a post-Brexit-vote London, Katie’s colonising, disruptive presence in Alicja’s life mirrors the treatment of mi-grants in the UK: Welcomed, used, then discarded. A raw, sexual, and visu-ally brash film exploring the abusive power and control over someone’s intimacy.

budget € 142 000 83 min., Colour, Russian-Estonian

synopsis

Film follows different age present-day Estonian Russians who are facing difficulties with their identities.

14 CASES is a feature documentary film targeted for international audience taking a fresh look at the present-day Russians living in Estonia. It is a char-acter driven story and it focuses on personal stories of born in Estonia young people who are the descendants of migrants from the Soviet era, representing almost the third generation. Although they lived their whole life surrounded by Estonian national symbols and colours, lifestyle and cuisine, they still speak Russian as their mother tongue, got secondary education in Russian language, listen and watch Russian radio and television, and gravitate towards Russian culture. They feel belonging to the history of Russia and Russian consciousness.

Almost for four years the film crew followed several Russian-speaking families in a decision-making period. All of them were facing the difficult task – to determine their own or their kids future. According to the age the choices differed. For the parents of five-year-olds – it is not an easy choice of kindergarten, either Estonian or Russian. For the family whose 12-year old son suddenly decides to change the school to Estonian – the question of his established identity which doesn’t well match with boy’s new schoolmates’; for the high-school graduates, the question either to stay or to leave Estonia.

IL PUGILE DEL DUCE debut / portraits production 2017, Italian, Istituto Luce Cinecittà

budget € 180 000 65 min., B&W/Colour, Italian

synopsis

Freely adapted from Nero di Roma di Mauro Valeri – Palombi Editori. He was the best. He was everybody’s favorite. He was the European cham-pion. He was Italian. But Leone Jacovacci wound up being none of the above. Because he was a black Italian. An unsung yet extraordinary tale about a fight in the ring postponed for 90 years: a fight against racism.

The Duce’s Boxer tells the incredible story of Leone Jacovacci, whose ca-reer was buried in the archives for decades and only recently brought to light. A boxer who flaunted a perfect technique, Jacovacci was agile, intelligent and a powerhouse. He spoke four languages fluently, five if you count the Roman dialect. He was Italian and maybe even fascist. Certainly not anti-fascist.

On the night of June 24, 1928, at the National Stadium in Rome, with nearly 40,000 boxing fans in the bleachers and a live radio broadcast airing in cities up and down Italy, Leone Jacovacci was dubbed the European middleweight champion. Adored by fans around the world at a time when boxing was the sport par excellence, Jacovacci had just one problem: the color of his skin. He was half-Italian and half-Congolese. Before contending for the European title, in fact, he’d struggled for four long years to win the right to the title of ‘Ital-ian’, in a non-stop showdown between the press, the sports organizations, the politicians and the bureaucracy. After the match, however, Mussolini erased the event from Italian history – the original footage of the match, which part of the documentary hinges on, was tampered with and altered beyond recog-nition – and promptly invented a new champ, the ‘white’ Primo Carnera.

synopsis Why do people stay in the city during the war? The protagonist puts this question to those he meets in Donetsk. The answers, the frames showing ordinary, trivial things done by citizens of Donetsk are like pieces of a puzzle that shows the life of the isolated city. Doing what they did before the war and what they would do after its end, the people stand up to the very idea of the war.

“Hero of the movie – an ordinary teenage boy from Donetsk, who is working as a courier, is dream-ing about unlimited subscription to the computer game. The question he asks people whom he meet during the work: «Why you are staying in the city of war?». We can see a real face of the iso-lated city from their answers. They still work and live as they used to do it be-fore war came to their city and as their probably going to live after it. And by it people resist even the idea war. But war is beside. We can see how it steps everywhere…

With the heroes of the movie we can hear it on the radio and tv, during conversations of doctors and injured soldiers, chats of people which houses were destroyed by the bombs. And other un-spoken questions keep coming and coming to our heads within that. Some of them suddenly are getting answers. Why people that just yesterday were citizens of that country take up arms and kill each other? How war change their minds? Can world be the same afterwards?

Sometimes it seems that our hero’s game addiction is almost like a war. It infected thousands of people’s minds. But in compare with an addiction we can’t buy immortal life during the war.”

synopsis

The Arctic Ocean Hydrographic Expedition, accomplished in the beginning of the XX century, between 1910 and 1915, led to the last great geographical discovery in the history of the world: the discovery of the Severnaya Zemlya. In Soviet time, the story of this expedition was ignored or falsified. There were two reasons for that: Kolchak, future leader of anti-Bolshevik forces was among its participants, and most officers who took part in the expedi-tion emigrated after the Revolution.. Unfortunately, there was no cameraman among the expedition crew and it left no footage. The film is based on unique material: journals of participants of the expedition, their memoires and pho-tos made during the trip. All this material plunges the spectator deep inside the dramatic story, full of suspense.

synopsis

An intimate and inside perspective of the ‘jungle’ of Calais, evoked through a polyphony of men, tales and atmospheres.

A sensory journey through the social life and survival strategies of migrants.A film of wind and despair, of fire and solidarity, of hope and hell.

In the middle of the journey of our life,I came to myself, in a dark wood, where the direct way was lost.Canto Primo, Inferno, Dante.

Sharing the daily life of migrants, on numerous visits during the entire duration of the ‘jungle’, and often using a collaborative methodology (images and narrations partly produced by the migrants), the director Laurent Van Lancker, proposes a film that is both poetical and political, evoking an untold and internal perception on the faculty of adap-tation and social life of migrants.

synopsis

In Soviet times it was impossible to go to a concert of composer Oleg Karavaichuk. Because there weren't any. Karavaychuk’s ec-centricity was too bewildering for the culture officials of that time, and he was practically banned from performing in public. He be-gan to work at the Lenfilm Studio and write film music there. Rec-ognition came to Karavaichuk only in the 2000s. It is summer 2015 and Oleg Karavaichuk gives his Pure Music concert. Half a year later he travels to Spain, where rehearses again. While there he meets with journalists and talks about how he senses the smell of death in the streets of ancient Pamplona.

synopsis

Knutifiction – a process of learning, metamorphosis. It provokes to review one’s own existence and being in this world through the prism of the History and personality of the Latvian Nobel prize nominee poet Knuts Skujenieks.

Young soviet poet after returning from studies in Soviet me-tropolis Moscow to provincial home land, one of 15 soviet repub-lics – Latvia, faces the stagnation and as the premonition to other free minded is captured and doomed for 7 years in Gulag. But, un-like KGB plans, he returns from Camp even more creative and undesirable to the existing system. And he keeps being like this till today, in his 80ies.

The film reveals the eternal struggle of a strong personality’s coming to terms with the society and system in which an indi-vidual is seen only as the minimum value. Knuts is not a macro revolutionary aiming to change the system, but is rather a micro rebel in his own inner world. His sharp gaze on new times his-tory of Eastern Europe and last 20 years of what is going on in the Globe, provokes the viewer to analyse his own attitude to different times and events, because Knut’s observations are based on his very personal experience during his life.

synopsis

Anna Eborn’s portrait of an octogenarian Swedish woman in Ukraine.Lida is a modern, poetic, cinematic experience. It is not a concep-tual movie nor meant to be consumable in a straight way.

By blending time and places – a narrative painting is created about a family love that only exist in memories. These are told in a timeless way by the main character Lida and her son and sister, mixing them, so that the characters can communicate with each other, regardless of the miles and hours separating them.

The film is an impressionistic, dreamy piece about beautiful characters, that span generations and who have lived through war, a war that they aren’t a part of, or involved in, but are, nonetheless, irreversibly affected by. Now they can only be connected to each other through their common memories and the distances between them seem to vanish.

Lida is an old Babushka, who is the last Old-Swedish speaking person in a former Swedish settlement from the 18th century in Ukraine. Lida is about the cycle of time and a community with a unique language disappearing.

Long echo — Of the explosion not far from the city? Of the time when the people searched for a new idea for their country? Or from the Maidan revolution that seemed to divide the country into two camps? Or is it more the long echo of Soviet thinking in Dobropolje and representative for the entire eastern Ukraine that led to the bloody conflict?

The film portrays the place Dobropolje, in the east Ukraine — 70 km from the separatist border away- and some of it´s people. The protagonists are inventive

and grasping: they redirect a single club, build a zoo with chameleons that must be smuggled over the new border. They play in a heavy metal band and drive taxi.

The film shows people on the periphery of the war, how it changed their daily lives and how people react on their new and old needs. Their struggle for survival is sometimes not without quirky moments that give the film an unexpected lightness. The film shows a region that not only in Europe kept playing on our minds for many months.

synopsis

A quest to discover the origins of an old photograph takes a winding road in the Balkans and ends up being an introspection on the first images ever filmed in the region.

A mysterious photograph of my great grandparents taken in the 1920’s somewhere in the Balkans reminds me of two Aromanian photographers, famous in the region at the time – Milton and Iana-ki Manakia. Trying to verify the assumption that my great grand-parents, also of Aromanian origin, were indeed photographed by the two brothers, I embark on a journey through Romania – Bul-garia – Macedonia – Greece trying to recompose the lifestory of the two people who became the very first filmmakers in the region, devoted documentarists of the most dramatic changes that re-shaped the face of the Balkans in the first part of the XXth century.

36

SKAZKI O MAME postdoc production 2017, Russa, Sirin Cinema Company budget € 22 000 83 min., Colour, Russian

synopsis

My Homeland Tales is a film about the resuscitated magic of the North where the human being stands a challenge: to believe in real-ity of things unreal and to preserve the islets of the old world.

The film is based on the documentary history of the inhabitants of Kenozero, product of an ethnological study of the mythology of the North. The roles are interpreted by the Kenozero villag-ers who played themselves or the characters from the fairy tales told by their grandmothers. The film shows the oral legends of the Russian North and the traditions and the world view of people who live there. Water spirits, forest spirits, wandering icons, sor-cerers live in their own world that parallels ours. The protagonist, already old, doubting the truthfulness of his life, is obliged to fol-low their magic paths to find his own answers…

THE DIRECTOR’S NOTE Our protagonist is a wanderer, a central image of Russian mythology. The wanderer’s way does not have beginning or end. He crosses the main mythological spaces, blended with the real world. Swamps, forests, lakes, water nymphs, forest brooks carrying icons that can bless you or damn you – all these are mythological topics of the North, most of which stayed in the memory of the old-timers and reached our days. The protagonist reaches the secret world of root legends, the root system of the spiritual culture of the Russian North. He feels this secret world but, for a while, does not see it. We conceived our film as a phantasmagoric wandering: bas-ing our film on the real Kenozero people, we tried to fix their habits with a documentary precision – for instance, when they fish, or stay overnight in the forest, or navigate their boats, or speak with each other, all the stories told by the grandmothers are purely documental. We furthermore added to our story images and allegories, basing the memories of our protagonist on the real ethnological material.

synopsis

Between East and West, between strong traditions and today’s innovations, between the nostalgic melodies of duduk and the beat of modern jazz, is Ye-revan. Six musicians, six styles, six personal stories behind one of the most musical cities in the former Soviet Union. At the end of the 20th century after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Yerevan survived wars, the blockade, a pe-riod of “darkness and hunger” and almost total isolation. Now it is changing dramatically, searching for its own identity, its path of development and its place in the world in the new millennium. The six participants of this film, including Grammy and World Music Award Laureate Arto Tuncboyaciyan and world-wide famous “duduk-voice” Jivan Gasparyan, are the “genius loci” of Yerevan. They personify its hidden pain and beauty. The film captures Tatiana Daniliyants’ ten years of research and an attentive eye for these musicians’ own stories and their extraordinary music.
