Escalante Family Dedication Marks Habitat’s 55th Home

Meyer Estates

On January 21st, community members celebrated the completion of Habitat’s 55th local home. This three bedroom, one-and-a-half bath, Energy Star-rated house is adjacent to a park and close to community shopping centers. The Escalante family will purchase this home with an affordable Habitat mortgage. They are looking forward to not having to move repeatedly and for their twins, a boy and a girl, to finally have their own bedrooms. Volunteers, community members, Habitat supporters, and home sponsors rallied together to make this home possible. A huge thanks to Ephrem Compte, who sponsored this home in honor of Mr. Lee Fischer, and to our other home sponsors including Georgia-Pacific, the Oregon Association of Realtors HOME Foundation and the Eugene Association of Realtors.

Our 10th and final home at the Meyer Estates development in Springfield is coming along quickly. Siding is going up and the addition of insulation and drywall are making the interior seem more like a home. Winter 2017 HABITATIONS 2

Habitat is delighted to welcome Esther Pomeroy, our new Resource Development Director. She will be responsible for fundraising and will also be involved in communications and marketing. Esther comes to Habitat from Utah, where she worked for several years in Development, Marketing and Communications for the Health Sciences at the University of Utah. She has a BA in English from the University of Utah and an MA in Journalism from the University of Southern California. She is absolutely thrilled to be part of this wonderful organization!

MEET ESTHER POMEROY

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR

Millard Fuller, who founded Habitat for Humanity along with his wife Linda, proclaims in his 1994 book Theology of the Hammer that “with God, all things are possible, and that certainly includes a world without shacks and homeless people. Everybody made in the image of God, and that’s the whole crowd, ought to have a decent place to live and on terms they can afford to pay.” To this day, that belief permeates over 1,400 Habitat

affiliates in the United States and hundreds more throughout the world. With God’s help we know we can make a huge difference in providing affordable housing in our community, country, and beyond our borders. We can collaborate with others in new and creative ways to expand our efforts to replace those “shacks” with basic, affordable homes. We can find common ground when seemingly in a sea of differences. As we spring ever closer to beginning the first of what will eventually be 12 homes in Fischer Village, we work to stay focused on our mission, true to our underlying beliefs, and committed to getting the job done. With

God’s help, a growing team of fantastic volunteers, and an expanding donor base, Habitat individuals and families in the homeownership and home repair programs will see their hopes and dreams blossom and bear fruit. That reality brings joy to our hearts, feeds our faith, and revitalizes our spirits.

-Don Griffin, Executive Director

Millard & Linda Fuller

HABITAT HAPPENINGS

Thanks to our wonderful donors, our year-end Annual Campaign was a huge success, raising over $56,800! With our generous Match Sponsors, the combined total is more than $106,800! A huge shout-out to the Eugene Association of Realtors and the Springfield Board of Realtors, who each supported a $5,000 Oregon Association of Realtors HOME Foundation grant to Habitat, for a total of $10,000. The Chambers Family Foundation gave a grant of $15,000 for a Hope Loop home. Supporters for our upcoming Fischer Village development in Springfield include Pacific Continental Bank, which presented a check for $1,500, and Banner Bank, which granted $2,500. Central Lutheran Foundation, the Autzen Foundation, and Bank of America each granted $5,000. Our largest development yet, Fischer Village will be life-changing for 12 families needing a safe, decent place to call home.

Join us on Tuesday, April 25th, from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at the Eugene Hilton as we raise funds for an entire house in an hour. We are excited to announce our special guest speaker, Dr. Nancy Golden, who served as Springfield’s Superintendent of Schools and Oregon’s Chief Education Officer. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear her speak about the life-changing impact a Habitat home has on children in our community. Attendance is free but by reservation only. To RSVP please contact Esther Pomeroy at [email protected] or 541-741-1707.

JOIN US FOR THE MARCH HOME SHOW! Join Habitat at the Lane County Home & Garden Show from March 9th-12th. The Home Show is a great opportunity to be an advocate for Habitat, to promote the ReStore, and to talk with community members about how they can get involved –whether it be through volunteering or as a partner in one of our programs.

Contact Amanda Adams, Volunteer Coordinator, at [email protected] or (541)741-1701 for info on how you can volunteer at the Habitat booth.

Save The Date: April 25 The Results Are In!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHTVolunteers On Wheels

OREGON CHARITABLE TAX CHECK OFF

Volunteers On Wheels is a mobile convoy of nonprofit volunteers who travel the country in brightly painted school buses, volunteering for nonprofits along the way. Their volunteering consists of a wide variety of local programs, including homeless outreach, senior/disabled care, animal welfare, environmental protection, and more. They provide a unique way for tourists and travelers to give back to the communities they visit – it’s a win-win! In recent months they have been volunteering with us, their first work with a Habitat affiliate. Their nonprofit’s values are strongly aligned with many of Habitat’s core values, including community development, senior/disabled care, and housing assistance. It has been a wonderful partnership and a tremendous benefit to Habitat’s recent work. Thank you Volunteers On Wheels!
