the project Mare Nostrum is financed by the eu european Refugee fund andis promoted by the Italian Ministry of Interior as leader of a partnership
involving the Italian National Institute for Health, Migration and poverty(NIHMp), the International organization for Migration (IoM) and the Ministry for
justice and Home Affairs of Malta.the Department of Health promotion and Disease prevention and the Migrant Health unit of the primary Health Department (Ministry for Health, the elderly andcommunity care) of Malta are involved in the implementation of medical activities.
With this project, the NIHMP and the Maltese partners intend to improve the health status of refugees and asylum seekers hosted in Maltese open centres,
also through the training of the health care professionals working for receiving and taking care of the specific needs of these population groups.
Besides updating health care professionals, the objective of the NIHMPand the Maltese partners is to promote discussion on medical issues
concerning the health of refugees and asylum seekers and to identify the critical points encountered in the assistance of
these vulnerable population groups, in order to outline reproducible operating modalities and strengthen the
referral system.
