THE BAT RK – Novelty – Horror – Vocal & Instrumental

Comp: Frank RONDELL & BUTLER Rts: Fujimo Music Co. (BMI)

Perf: Frank RONDELL [aka. Frank Chiarelli] (vocal)

& THE CHANCELLORS Bob Gray (piano) Bill Herechuck (guitar) Al Vandetti (bass) Ross Mallard (drums) Prod. Co: Fujimo Records; Elkhart, IN Time: 2:20 Label: Fujimo 917F-6138 Spec: 7" 45rpm Flip Sd: Last Laugh’s on Me Notes: A ghoulish, horror song of five stanzas about doing the bat, with lots of morbid laughing at the end

of the verses. The first stanza spells it out – Come on everybody An’ do the bat now Well, come in like a monster An’ he walked like that now.

It was not always possible to make out the lyrics, but some other stanzas mention Frankenstein, Wolfman, and Igor, all well-known horror movie characters. There is the vague suggestion that in doing the bat, a sort of dance, one must imitate a real bat, but the main impression is of someone dressed up acting like a bat. Frank Rondell and the Chancellors were from Hamilton, Ontario. The photo shows (Background l. to r.) Bob Gray, Ross Mallard, Bill Herechuck, & Al Vandetti and (kneeing in front) Frank Rondell.

(Tk 9) Notes: This group, whose name means “The Bats” in English, was from Oviedo, Asturias in northern Spain and was originally labeled a new wave punk band. The complete title translates as “Bat Is Back (I’m Coming for You),” which doesn’t really sound like it’s referring to the mammal, rather to the group Bat [Murciélagos], which is back on the scene. The cover of their 1989 EP had a small logo-like medallion in the upper left corner showing a small stylized bat and the text “Bat is Back.” This number has never been heard. Australian CD-EP: LA MUERTE VITA (2003) Shock CTX214CD (Tk 4) Notes: A punk rock band from Los Angeles that formed in 2002. This was their first single. It was produced by Beau Burchell and recorded at his home in Los Angeles. The single was released on both compact disc and 12-inch vinyl, the latter a picture disc limited to 1,000 copies. The gaudy picture cover has a feeble relation to the song whose lyrics make it clear that it has little to do with the mammal. The second stanza, first verse is – My heart is lost, baptized in my hate bats That’s the only mention of bats so this really doesn’t qualify as a bat rock song. However, the real bat picture cover and the real bat label certainly do qualify this as a bat record.

Roadrunner APCY-8070 (Tk 3) Notes: Annihilator are a Canadian heavy metal band formed in 1984. Taken literally the title means bats in the church belfry but, more commonly it is an old expression meaning someone who is crazy in the head. Waters writes – "The attitude here is one of anger, bordering on insanity; a mood we all had to get into to do this song. Broken strings, a dozen picks, a lot of coffee and ten drum sticks." The idea in the first chorus is the one of craziness, but the second chorus mentions a real bat. The chorus runs – It's time to realize It's not that hard to see Just open up your eyes I've got bats in the belfry. Why don't you listen I'm trying to help you You don't, don't give a damn.

After the second chorus, he recites some verses before the intense guitar solo – Anxiety attack as confusion rips my mind; Help me, my head is spinning 'round 'an 'round! Help me, I guess you'll never know Until it hits you in the face like a bat! Regarding the band name it could be referring to the brains of very intelligent bats or to the human brains of this batty trio. Look I burned my hands, Are the hands have come to share... Streets are powered with people, While the woods are different than rain from, bats will fly

rhythm ‘n’ blues style, is rejected lover’s lament. The lyrics (see under Song Lyrics) seem to be referring to a “bottomless pit” in the literal sense of the term rather than the figurative sense. Each stanza ends with the singer saying that he is falling or tumbling – Down, down, down, down, down,

Down in this bottomless pit.

At the end of the third stanza the words “bottomless pit” are given an echo effect. The advertisement (on the left) showing a dizzy-headed man in a pit was printed in Cash Box, April 1958. Those who “peer into the seemingly impenetrable darkness of a giant cave or pool of water” where there seems to be no apparent end or bottom will frequently call it a bottomless pit. There are cave pit features in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

(shown here) and Carlsbad Caverns, New Mexico called “The Bottomless Pit” and also in numerous other show caves. The term is also applied to wild cave pits all over the English-speaking world. If taken in the figurative sense a bottomless pit can also mean the depths of depression and despair or an endless workload. “Billy Mitchell was an R&B singer who signed on with The Clovers in 1953 assuming lead vocal duties from then lead-singer Charlie White (there were a whole bunch of Clovers along the way). “Bottomless Pit” was Billy’s only as far as I know.” (Crayger244 2018) Ref: Billy Mitchell, Bottomless Pit, 45cat Billy Mitchell, Bottomless Pit, Discogs Billy Mitchell, Bottomless Pit, (2:32), YouTube (◄COMPLETE AUDIO SAMPLE) Crayger244 2018, Billy Mitchell, Short Bio & Photo, wordpress What is a Bottomless Pit?, wisegeek

“The lyrics of the song are about a foetus, very much aware of what is going on outside the womb and frightened by nuclear fallout, which implies that the song is set either during a nuclear war scare or a post-apocalyptic birth. The lyrics also refer to the foetus absorbing nicotine from the mother's smoking. In an interview that year Bush described the song as her ‘little symphony,’ adding that she considered it her best work to date.” (Murdoch 1985) For the video, which promoted this song, Kate Bush, dressed with translucent bat wings, did a special bat dance choreography during her performance. Date: 1995 Time: 3:59 S. MULLINS CD: JEFF’S LAST DANCE – VOL. 2 SMG 1910 (Tk 5) Notes: A live recording of this rock ballad that first was released in 1995, three years before the longer studio version presented just below. This folk-rock singer is from Atlanta, Georgia. This slow bluesy song is a nostalgic piece where the “canyons and caverns” are purely figurative mental states. In the first stanza, a childhood photo is remembered and then adult cares intrude – There are canyons there are caverns There are border roadside taverns I am held captive by the big blue sky above me

The second stanza talks of childhood toys and the last one tells of adult troubles and frustrations and ends with –

Always keep my laughing at myself And I laugh a lot that’s what I do And I learn the things I never knew And I see canyons I see caverns I see border roadside taverns And I am held captive by the big blue sky above me Ref: Jeff’s Last Dance – Vol. 2 CD, Wikipedia Shawn Mullins, Canyons and Caverns, Lyrics, azlyrics Shawn Mullins & Matthew Kahler, Jeff’s Last Dance – Vol. 2 CD, Allmusic (◄AUDIO SAMPLE) Shawn Mullins & Matthew Kahler, Jeff’s Last Dance – Vol. 2 CD, Discogs

EP-CD: SLE.EP One Day Savior ODS0 19 (Tk 3) 2. CD: LOVESICK Doghouse DOG-096 (Tk 3) Notes: A 30-second sample had a rollicking beat and these lyrics –

This one is for the young and the old. This one is for you all to have as your own. Downtown's another year older. And where have the Kennedy's gone to now? This one is for you all, and you let it go.

I'm ready to cave, but I’m willing to live. I wanna look over what is not and what is. And I’ll lift you up before I give in. I need to feel closer now than I’ve ever been. This one comes from below and above. And it's given to us all, but I’ve seen enough.

The mood seems to be one of hope and the singer is “ready to cave,” whatever that means in the context. Ref: Celebrity, Cave; Lyrics, lyricsfreak Celebrity, Cave, (3:36), YouTube (◄COMPLETE AUDIO SAMPLES) Celebrity, Sle.ep EP-CD, Discogs Celebrity, Lovesick CD, Discogs

A strange and stress-filled string melody introduces a sad, wailing complaint-song that never mentions a cave and only has a vague figurative reference to the cave environment. Stanza I might be referring to some dig in a cave – Digging in the dark Turning over stones Pounding in my heart Turning over bombs.

The main theme of the song seems to be a kind of despairing plea – “Unearth my soul.” Jorane, is a French-Canadian singer/cellist, who is notable for her alternative music style on a typically classical instrument as well as her ability to sing while playing cello at the same time. The lyrics talk about “digging tunnels under workplace cubes” and about “going to work” and “life” in general. Stanza 4 goes –

(So) I go to work on nights and weekends So none can witness what I do Beneath my desk I pulled the rug back I'm digging out a cave beneath my cube

Then the last two verse of Stanza 6 – I’m through cement I’m down to dirt now I'm digging out a cave beneath my cube

Perf: THE DELEGATES Bobby De Carlo Prod. Co: Mainstream Records; New York, NY Time: 5:07 1. Original & Reissue 45: Mainstream MRL 5525 2. LP: THE DELEGATES (1972) Mainstream MRL 100 12” 33epm (Sd 1 – Bd 4) 3. Reissue on Compilation CD: THE DR. DEMENTO COLLECTION: THE EARLY 70s (1996) Rhino R2-7175 (Tk 17) Notes: This type of novelty record, known as a "break-in" or "cut-in" record, consists of a comical narrative where each element of the story line is illustrated or answered by excerpts of suitable lyric phrases dubbed right off current hit records. (see under Rock Music – Rock ‘n’ Roll – The Creature). The thing starts with Walter Cronkite (Walter Klondike) at the Republican Convention in Miami Beach. David Brinkley (David Stinkley) questions Henry Kissinger about his thoughts on this historic occasion and Kissinger answers with a verse from The Jimmy Castor Bunch's hit, "Troglodyte (Cave Man)" – “Gotta find a woman” (4X). Later he asks Spiro Agnew who he would choose as a running mate and the latter responds “Bertha Butt.” Then Stinkley asks: “Who is she, Sir?” Answer: “One of the Butt sisters?” Stinkley turns back to Kissinger and asks if he agrees and Kissinger repeats “Gotta find a woman” (4X). For full information on this Jimmy Castor hit see under Rock Music – Soul. This single was released twice with different flip sides but the same catalog number. The same idea involving Henry Kissinger is used again in The Delegates 1972 single, “(After the Election) Richard M. Nixon – Face the Issues” (Mainstream MRL 5530). Here John Cameron Swayze (Swayback) and the gentlemen of the press meet with the reelected president. They see that the president is accompanied by Henry Kissinger and the journalist Sidney asks him – “Mister Kissinger, what would you like to say to the American people?”. Kissinger replies as before “Gotta find a woman” (4X) and Sidney says – “Oh, come on now Mister Kissinger can’t you say something besides – “Gotta get a woman?” Ref: Blair, John; Turco, Art; & Rogers, Michael 1977, Flying Saucers to Star Warts, Record Exchanger, v.5, n. 2. The link with prehistoric Cro-Magnon Man is somewhat tenuous. The word "Cro-Magnon" translates as Magnon Cave, since “Cro” means cave or rock shelter. The original cave is a shallow shelter cave behind some houses just north of the Hotel de Cro-Magnon at Les Elyzies in the Dordogne department of France. It is now protected by a museum and orientation center built in front of it. Formed 1986 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Warner Elektra Atlantic WEA 4509-93274-2 (Tk 1) Notes: A energetic rock piece with wailing guitars and somewhat ambiguous lyrics. The general idea seems to be that his girl has left him, but that someday she may return. The only mention of cave is in the chorus, which runs – La cueva mojada, The wet cave mis huesos y todo me da igual, My bones and everything is the same for me. La cueva mojada, The wet cave mis huesos y todo me da igual. My bones and everything is the same for me.

It would appear that the word “cave” is used here in a figurative sense and there is no connection with caves either real or imaginary. In 1991, five guys from Vigo, Spain formed Los Piratas. Over the next 12 years, almost nobody would have guessed they would end up becoming one of the most influential pop/rock bands in Spanish music history.
