A gold coin donation will take place as well as various food stalls to assist in our contribution to this very needy school. It is the intent of Marian Catholic College to not only provide financial and educational resource support for Paul VI College in Leulumoega, Samoa but also to give a number of our students the opportunity to have an immersion experience, attending Paul VI College, and coming to understand more closely the lives of others. By doing so, we believe that it will help shape our students’ values and way of living their own life, helping to form a Christian character with a giving heart, more aware of the needs of others. Next Tuesday the College welcomes Marist Brother, Graham Neist and Mr Frank Malloy who will be spending a couple of days with staff as we learn about Marist spirituality and how it can help enhance our leadership and quality of catholic education. Dear Parents, Students and Friends

Our School Feast Day is associated with Mary Help of Christians. Her Feast Day is May 24. Marian will be

celebrating the occasion with a Mass, led by our Chaplain Fr Neru, at 1pm Monday 26 May in the Marcellin

Hall. You are most welcome to join us.

Students will be fundraising on the day for the Samoan Catholic School-Paul VI College. This is the

school we are supporting to provide better educational opportunities for the students. A gold coin donation will

take place as well as various food stalls to assist in our contribution to this very needy school. It is the intent of

Marian Catholic College to not only provide financial and educational resource support for Paul VI College in

Leulumoega, Samoa but also to give a number of our students the opportunity to have an immersion

experience, attending Paul VI College, and coming to understand more closely the lives of others. By doing so,

we believe that it will help shape our students’ values and way of living their own life, helping to form a

Christian character with a giving heart, more aware of the needs of others.

Next Tuesday the College welcomes Marist Brother, Graham Neist and Mr Frank Malloy who will be

spending a couple of days with staff as we learn about Marist spirituality and how it can help enhance our

leadership and quality of catholic education. On one level it helps the staff reconnect with our story as a Marist

school and on another it will help shape our future as we begin to understand how the Marian Catholic College

Vision and Mission can incorporate Mary’s charism in a 21st century catholic school.

Early Notice: on Friday 6 June, before the long weekend, staff will be using one of our Staff Professional

Learning days spending time together to focus on Authentic Learning and the General Capabilities in the

Australian Curriculum. Teachers will also be utilising time to further refine our new report format in preparation

for electronic mail-out for Years 7-11. We ask that you make alternative arrangements for the care of your

child for this day. The office will be open as usual.

Ascension Thursday, the Feast of the Ascension of Jesus to heaven takes place on Thursday 29th June.

This feast day occurs 40 days after his resurrection on Easter Sunday. It is the final occasion that Jesus spent

time with his disciples and is ten days before the birthday of the Church, Pentecost Sunday.

Today on Ascension Day, help us to follow the example of the disciples in Acts 1:14 who, after seeing

Jesus leave this earth, returned to Jerusalem and “joined together constantly in prayer.” Today may

we all voice our prayers to you about the need of your presence in our lives and in our world and our

great need for your direction, strength and help. May we receive the empowering promise of your Holy

Spirit so we may be your witnesses in our own families and communities and all over the earth. We

pray in the name of Jesus, our Ascended Lord. Amen

Advice for HSC students

Year 12 students are now preparing for their HSC Trial exams. I have spoken to a few Year 12 students over the past week, who are looking to improve their study skills in the hope of making an improvement to their Trial results next term. An article in The Age, ‘In search of top marks’, includes some excellent tips for success and I have shared these with you below.

To be the best, you have to be the best prepared, and the only way to achieve this is to work hard.

Top students study for two to five hours on a week night and three to six hours a day at weekends.

Put distractions (magazines, games, TV) away.

Turn off the mobile phone.

Make a list of deadlines.

Try using ear plugs, and listen to music only when doing undemanding work.

Consider studying in a library where there are fewer distractions.

Find study buddies for sharing notes and discussing ideas.

Consider a tutor, because they force you to work and can change your attitude to a subject.

Get help from your teacher.

Get family members to test you before exams.

Plan your week ahead.

Remember to take breaks.

Get a copy of the course syllabus as it is a guide as to what should be in your study notes.

Write brief notes and review them immediately. Review them again after 24 hours and then twice a week thereafter.

Use colour to highlight important headings. Subheadings act as memory triggers.

Do lots of practice papers. Research shows top students do a lot more practice tests.

Read extra material, making notes of relevant information and then refer to it in your exam essay.

Look for a unique angle. Demonstrate that you understand opposing opinions and then explain why you believe one argument is more correct.

Avoid stressed people and those who speculate about what is in an exam on the day. Aim to stay calm.

It takes students about 10 minutes to focus in the exam room. Start mentally rehearsing what you are going to do before examiner says you may start.

Check how many marks have been allocated to each part of the exam question.

Read and re-read the questions.

Spend five minutes planning your essay.

Learn from your mistakes.

20-minute power naps can help.

Keep things in perspective.

I hope that students and parents will find these tips useful. Year 12 students who need advice and support

should talk to their classroom teachers, mentors, Year Advisor or myself.

Finding studying stressful? Stop whining, play chess! Chess is boot-camp for the brain! It requires mental

stamina and intense concentration. Champion chess players, after a gruelling game, will often perform

open heart surgery or bomb disposal duty just so they can wind down! Chess is not for the faint hearted

(why not come and have a game).

This week the College took part in a no-holds-barred death-cage chess match against St Francis. Two

schools went in, only one comes out.

There are four games played in a match. Each team supplies four players ranked in order of capability. In

the case of a tie (2 games each), the fourth players (board 4) is removed. If it is still a tie, the other boards

are removed in ascending order until there is a decisive result.

Board 4 went to St Francis.

Board 3 went to MCC. This put us in a strong position. A win on either board 1 or 2 would mean an over-

all win for the team. Both remaining boards looked evenly matched. We were in for the long haul.

Board 2 went to St Francis. MCC was in a winning position for most of the game. This all changed with

one move. Such is life.

This meant that MCC needed a win on board 1 for an overall win. Two hours in, the game was still too

close to call. In the end, St Francis won the game and the match.

The Griffith Red Shield Appeal Doorknock

The Griffith Red Shield Appeal Doorknock takes place on the Sunday

25 May 2014, and it offers Australians from all walks of life a chance

to not only get behind the Salvos but to be part of transforming the

lives of people.

You can help by volunteering as a Red Shield Appeal Doorknock collector. A

short training video clip can be found using Google.

Google Red Shield Appeal Volunteer

Select Red Shield Doorknock » Volunteering » Get Involved » salvos.org.au

salvs.org.au › Get Involved › Volunteering

When: - Sunday 25 May 2014

Where from: - Salvation Army Citadel. 103 Binya St

Time: - 9:00 am start

Collectors will be in groups of 3 or 4. Senior High School students can form their

own teams and drive themselves. For Junior High School teams we encourage

Mums and Dads to act as drivers, but don’t worry if Mum and Dad are busy, we

have volunteer drivers who have completed a police check form. Students in 1’s

and 2’s will be linked up with other groups. Following registration, most collec-

tion areas are completed within 90 minutes.

The School Office has Registration Forms.

The Griffith area’s goal this year is $18,000. Every dollar raised results in more

people being helped. In Griffith the Salvation Army provide men’s crisis accom-

modation as well numerous other forms of welfare support.

Together, we can help over 1 million Australians this year

Children can obtain a Team Registration Form from the Office.
