Private First Class Michael T. Newsome told the Detachment that the 13 weeks he had just completed at Parris Island were “good weeks”. He grew taller by two inches and put on some muscle. The Crucible was a real test, he said, which lasted for 54 hours. It began with a15-mile hike and the Drill Instructors acted as enemy soldiers, and used the Battle of Fallujah as a template. He explained that deci- sion-making became very difficult after being stressed out for 54 straight hours.

Some of it has not changed: they still hike to the rifle range; they still have black flags and sand fleas; they still produce remarkable Marines like PFC Newsome. Making “Sugar Cookies” was a new twist: they apply bug repellent and sun screen all over their bodies and roll around in a 50’ by 50’ sand pit until they all look like big sugar cookies. Next, he goes to Camp LeJeune for Marine Combat Training, then he comes back to Tallahassee to earn a chemical engi- neering degree. He is a member of Detachment 472. Semper Fi!

Why is the Marine Corps Hymn a “hymn” as op- posed a “song”? A hymn is a type of song, usually religious, written for the purpose of praising some- one. The word “hymn” derives from the Greek word, H ymnos, which is translated as “song of praise”. Other military songs tell a story; they do not praise the members of their service. The Marine Corps Hymn is, in fact, a song of praise which was written to praise Marines.

Marine Corps Planning Process

The key functions of the Marine Corps Planning Process include directing and coordinating ac- tions, and developing situational awareness. Overall, the MCPP serves as a common frame- work to coordinate planning at many levels.

Step 1: Mission analysis to create a clear mission statement for the unit. This is done by reviewing orders and guidance to determine the core objective.

Step 2: Developing a course of action. Sev- eral courses of action are discussed to discover possible solutions. This is a “brainstorming” process to uncover a variety of ideas.

Step 3: A course of action war game. The ideas from Step 2 are simulated in a war game to discover benefits and problems of various plans. This is the “troubleshooting” phase of planning.

Step 4: Course of action comparison and decision. Results from the war game scenarios are compared and the commander selects the course of action that is the best choice to accom- plish planned objectives.

Step 5: Orders development. The chosen course of action is translated into actual orders which clearly convey the intent and guidance of the commander’s plan.

Step 6: Transition. Orders that outline the plan are handed to all required personnel. Eve- ryone involved in the plan now knows his role and how it fits into the larger plan.

Spotlight on Marine Jack Rosenau

Jack Rosenau was born on 26 October 1919 and was raised in Detroit, Michigan. He attended Cass Technical High School and was a student of Aeronautical Engineering. One of Jack’s instruc- tors told him about practical aviation being taught at the Gross Isle Naval Air Station a few miles south of Detroit. Jack found a welcome to the Marine Reserve Fighter Squadron VME-5. With his parents’ permission, at the age of 17, and two years from graduation, Jack joined the Marines on 16 December 1937.

After Jack received three years of Marine aircraft engine and airframe familiarization, Jack’s squadron was called to active duty with the ground crew reporting to Quantico, Virginia, in Decem- ber, 1940.

Quantico became basic training for Jack with physical exercise, rifle and pistol training, but most importantly, Jack was given the opportunity to choose the specialty he wished to work in. Jack chose “aerology”, the Navy equivalent to “weather”. Jack was assigned to the Aerology office on Brown Field and then to Aerology School at Lakehurst, New Jersey. Upon graduation, Jack was promoted to Sergeant and returned to Quantico with assignments to MAG-11.

In October, 1941, Jack was transferred to Headquarters MAG-14 FMF, San Francisco and was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant in July, 1942. The following September, Jack was temporar- ily assigned to the U.S.A.A.F. as an aerographer. His assignment was with the 79th Bombardment Squadron, which flew anti-submarine and search flights over the Pacific in a Lockheed A-28 Hud- son Aircraft.

In October, 1942, Jack was again re-assigned to MAG-11, FMAW, FMF, and promoted to Tech- nical Sergeant in November, 1942. Once back in MAG-11, Jack was busy with the pending depar- ture for the Pacific Theater. MAG-11 was boarded ship on 15 October and set sail on 16 October 1942. In route they made a brief stop at Noumea, New Caledonia, and then on to Espirito Santo, where MAG-11 set up operations.

MAG-11 engaged in offensive operations against enemy strongholds, air power, and enemy ship- ping through- out the Solomon Islands. Jack’s duties entailed flying in bombers to collect weather patterns for the entire air group.

Sheena Backus, a Nutrition Coordinator at Elder Care Services, gave the Detachment an invitation to the 15th Annual Oktoberfest, which will be held on October 25 at Mission San Luis from 6:30 until 10:00. She also in- vited us to learn more about Elder Care Services, in the event that we may make use of them personally or if we know someone who can use them. Elder Care Services operates Meals on Wheels, Foster Grandparents, and transportation for homebound seniors. And these are just a few of the programs they offer the local senior citi- zens.

As their brochure says, “Volunteers are the heart of Elder Care. We have volunteer opportunities for all ages from young adults and children (with adult supervision) to active senior citizens. Businesses and organizations are also encouraged to adopt Elder Care for group volunteer projects.” The telephone number for Elder Care Services is (850) 921-5554.
