Memorial University of NewfoundlandThe largest university in Atlantic Canada, Memorial University offers more than 100 degree programs to a student population of more than 17,500. Students can expand their horizons at any one of our four campuses.

The St. John’s campus and the Marine Institute are located in St. John’s, the capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador. Students can choose to study at our campus on the west coast, in Corner Brook, or in Harlow, England.

Applicants should have successfully completed the graduation requirements for high school, with a minimum overall average of 60 per cent in mathematics, English, and laboratory science. Students completing academic level math require a minimum 60 per cent in that course (See page 17 for the Canadian High School Equivalencies Chart).

Get a Head StartApplicants who have completed a three-year diploma of technology in electrical engineering; electronics engineering; mechanical engineering or marine engineering may be eligible to receive advanced standing. First year foundation requirements are waived for approved students; students begin their studies in Term 3 of this program.

Joint Diploma of Technology/Bachelor of Technology

Applicants should have successfully completed the graduation requirements for high school, with a minimum overall average of 60 per cent in mathematics, English, and laboratory science. Students completing academic level math require a minimum 60 per cent in that course (See page 17 for the Canadian High School Equivalencies Chart). In order to receive any one of the credentials, requirements for both the diploma and the degree must be successfully completed.

Applicants are required to have completed a three-year diploma program or a four-year degree program and must submit a resume and three letters of reference, one of which must be an academic reference at the post-secondary level. Individual programs may have additional admission requirements.

International Students

MI International is your connection for international student services at the Marine Institute. We work closely with Memorial University’s International Student Advising Office to provide immigration advice, language support programs, housing and employment assistance – from application to graduation!

AdmissionsSubmit an Application for Admission to the Marine Institute, along with official documentation, well in advance of the semester for which you are seeking admission. You should begin the application process as early as possible. Due to time constraints and immigration processes, applications cannot be considered beyond April 1 for September enrolment and August 1 for January enrolment. Most students also require a Study Permit and a Temporary Resident Visa before coming to Canada. Please visit the Canadian Citizenship and Immigration website for information on how to apply for these documents. www.cic.gc.ca

English as a Second LanguageYou should possess an adequate knowledge of written and spoken English as a prerequisite to admission. The Marine Institute accepts a number of ways to demonstrate English language proficiency including:• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - minimum 550

paper-based; 213 computer-based; 79 Internet-based test.• International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - an

overall band score of 6.5, with at least band 6 in each of writing and reading.

Where to LiveThe Marine Institute is only a few minutes from Memorial University’s St. John’s campus residences and on-campus apartments. You will also find countless accommodations throughout St. John’s and surrounding areas. There is a separate application for student housing. You do not need to wait to be accepted by the Marine Institute to apply for on-campus housing. We recommend that you apply early. 2. Apply NowApply as early as possible. Applications received following the dates indicated below will be assessed as resources and space allow.

3. Apply for HousingThere is a separate application for student housing. You do not need to wait to be accepted by the Marine Institute to apply for on-campus housing. We recommend that you apply early by visiting www.housing.mun.ca

4. What to Expect After You ApplyYou will receive information from us regarding the status of your application, your admission and details about scholarships and awards. Scholarships are awarded twice a year to our new and returning students based on academic achievement, leadership and creativity. And, as a campus of Memorial University of Newfoundland, you are eligible for all Memorial entrance scholarships.
