INTRODUCTION Geoscientific Geospatial data is the foundation to analyzing and understanding natural resources, environment processes, impacts, hazards and stress such as climate change.

Disparate efforts in the region:-large amounts of geoscience research and data -priceless-adequately digitized , catalogued or duplicated-seldom in cooperated into GIS system

OIP uses an array of GIS tools to produce digital geospatial systems and maps

SOPAC OIP now has an ongoing committment to data rescue, collation, storage, data cataloguing and digitisation.

KEY PRINCIPLES OF DATA RESCUE

Data to be stored as image files into medias, that can regularly renewed to prevent subsequent loss of data due to deterioration of medium.

Data already on computer compatible media should be routinely migrated to storage facilities that conform to changing technologies and enable easy access; and

Data should be key-entered in a form that can be use for analyses

OBJECTIVES:

System that assists in the management , preservation/ archiving SOPAC's Marine and Oceanographic data and its metadata.

System that gives a public presence of SOPAC Marine data and promote SOPAC OIP products and work

System that allows the sharing of information between different organisation for better decision making in the region

STANDARD

ISO 19115 - International Geospatial Metadata standard

(Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Content, Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM), officially, known as FGDC-STD-001-1998 or The Dublin Core Metadata Element)

What Does Metadata Do?

An important reason for creating descriptive metadata is to facilitate discovery of relevant information. In addition to resource discovery, metadata can help organize electronic resources, facilitate interoperability and legacy resource integration, provide digital, identification, and support archiving and preservation.

Metadata is key to ensuring that resources will survive and continue to be accessible into the future.

METADATA STANDARD : ISO 19115

DESCRIPTIVE METADATADescribes a resource for the purposes such as discovery and identification. It can include elements such as tittle, abstrct , author and keywords

Page 9: MARINE SPATIAL DATA INFRASTRUCTURE : SOPAC GEONETWORK

METADATA STANDARD : ISO 19115

Structural metadata:Indicates how compound objects are put together, for example, how pages are ordered to form chapter or how it was digitised and reformed to usable formats.

Administrative metadata provides information to help manage a resource, such as when and how it was created, filet ype and other technical information, and who can access it. There are several subsets of administrative data; two thatsometimes are listed as separate metadata types are: − Rights management meta-data, which deals with intellectual property rights, and − Preservation metadata, which contains information needed to archive and preserve a resource.

SUMMARY

SOPAC GEONETWORK is an online catalogue of marine scientific information and associated informationInformation collected from surveys and ocean observations conducted in the Pacific Region

BENEFITS – public presence of Scientist work, use of simple visuals to coomunicate information, e quick reference for more detailed enquiry, Wider stakeholders know of marine data existence, (Dataset and metadata) archived and preserved , provides a focal point for marine data request in the region.
