We’ve got a programme we’re very excited about here at the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis.

It’s called R&D by the Sea.

R&D by the Sea is the Marine Theatre’s nurturing programme for new and developing work.

We all need space to think. Lyme Regis, set in the heart of England’s first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by 95 miles of truly stunning coastline with rocks recording 185 million years of the Earth’s history, has just that.

It’s not often ideas come fully formed. We need time to delight, surprise, scare and confuse ourselves. To give ourselves fertile ground on which to develop. To invest in hours of research and then to forget all about it. This is where R&D by the Sea comes in.

R&D by the Sea gives artists use of thetheatre and its facilities, normally for a 5-day period, to develop their work. We’ve invited writers, actors, theatre makers and practitioners of all kinds to come to Lyme Regis. Unfold, unlock and explore a vision, a feeling, a thought.

We’re very excited to be welcoming 3 companies to Lyme Regis this spring under the R&D by the Sea umbrella. Each sharing will be entirely different. It may last 10mins. It may last an hour. We can’t tell you much about them, as they haven’t been made yet. All we ask is that you come along with a warm heart and an open mind. In return, we’ll promise to give you an exclusive behind the scenes glance at what goes on in a rehearsal room. You’ll get a chance to chat to the company afterwards and fill out a feedback form with your thoughts. We’d love to hear what you think.


Working in a building with a 119-year history can sometimes be a problem, and when that building is right next to the sea things can be even trickier. An extensive survey has revealed that in order to preserve the Marine, its two roofs are in desperate need of repair, with the pitch roof needing re-insulating, re-pitching and re-slating. Work to re-gutter, repair mortaring, paint the walls and treat the sea-facing timbers, along with the addition of solar panels, will add to the longevity and the economic and environmental sustainability of the theatre. The total cost of this work is estimated to be somewhere in the region of £95,000.

The building has survived for generations through the support of the community. With your help we want to guarantee the people of Lyme Regis a theatre at the heart of the Jurassic Coast for another 119 years.

We’ve got a great history of fantastic performance here in Lyme.

Whether it’s one of the local societies (who date back to the 1920s), Lyme Youth Theatre or one of the dozens of world famous acts that have appeared here over the years (including Jimmy Cagney, Michael McIntyre, Status Quo and Jo Brand) there has always been excellent, affordable nights out in Lyme. Warren and his merry band of school kids have their sights set firmly on the Premier League, but first there’s the small matter of conquering the Somerset Schools’ Cup.

Meanwhile, a teenage girl called Rachel is willing Yeovil on to victory and promotion back to The Championship. Her Bovril–loving older brother is by her side and with her all the way or is he?

SOUTHERN TENANT FOLK UNIONFriday 30th January

One of the most highly acclaimed folk/bluegrass bands in the UK today, Southern Tenant Folk Union are about to release their sixth album (The Chuck Norris Project) and since starting out in 2006, have toured their exciting live show all over the UK, Ireland, Netherlands and Germany.

A six-piece all-acoustic band with banjo, mandolin, fiddle and harmony vocals, they perform an eclectic mix of high-energy atmospheric folk and have received airplay from Bob Harris and Steve Lamacq on BBC Radio 2. Live appearances include BBC One TV (The Andrew Marr Show), RTE TV (The Late Late Show) and Radio 4’s Loose Ends. Artistically successful, award winning and with an exciting live act worked around a single microphone, they have performed at Celtic Connections, Orkney Folk Festival, Belladrum and The Electric Picnic and now sell out arts centres across Europe.

Live folk music, songs and dance combine in this work-in-progress showing of an original new musical. Adapted from the epic novel, Toilers of the Sea by Victor Hugo, and fusing the worlds of folk music, physical theatre, contemporary dance and musical theatre, this is a tale of one man’s quest to win love. A love story on an epic scale spanning 30 years.

Set in old Peking, it is the story of a poor Chinese boy who falls in love with a Princess and dreams of becoming wealthy enough

to marry her. This much-loved tale follows Aladdin’s adventures where he meets a wicked Magician, the Slave of the Ring and the Genie of the Lamp.

Circus Geeks

Beta Testing is a new kind of show- somewhere between a TED- talk, a Heath Robinson demonstration and a circus show.

Circus Geeks are a brilliant trio of young jugglers who use their fascination with throwing and catching to explore a logical approach to life, a light-hearted look at awkward social situations, and the misplaced fear of failure.

They’ll teach you the lingo, give you an insight into practicing the same trick over and over again, and show you why jugglers are terrified of fish.

Circus Geeks began life as a blog, set up after a late-night conversation about juggling, art and how to make the perfect pizza.

Lyme Youth Theatre

Hospital Food is our very own Lyme Youth Theatre’s exciting and challenging contribution to Connections, the National Theatre’s annual festival of new plays for youth theatres and schools.

Ten teenagers are the residents of a teenage cancer unit in a city hospital. Their shared illness bonds them and they support each other as they reveal their fears and hopes for the future while confronting, head on, the very real prospects of untimely death.

The teenagers have a special room called The Retreat – a place to go where it is calm and where their thoughts can be intimated to each other without fear of it ever leaving the room. What is discussed in The Retreat stays in The Retreat.

Parisian chic comes to the Marine Theatre as vocalist Magdalena Atkinson sings a varied programme of well-loved songs from the greats, including Edith Piaf, Charles Trenet and Charles Aznavour. Most familiar will be the classic music of Piaf, France’s most beloved entertainer, national icon and musical legend. Magdalena’s singing is not an impersonation but an interpretation, always heartfelt, sometimes humorous, and highlights are plentiful, from Milord to La Vie en Rose, Mon Dieu to the inevitable Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien.

Philip Clouts is the perfect accompanist for this project, being a composer and pianist both in his own quartet and also in Zubop.

Inspired by Don Quixote’s wanderings, two feisty senoritas and a downtrodden Englishman embark on a journey through Spain taking on one of the most accomplished works of fiction ever written.

Accompanied only by a guitarist whose presence there makes no sense whatsoever, they will lead you to joy, pain and ultimate wisdom. Sixty glorious minutes concluding with a common sentiment: “These guys did not read the book”.

Little Soldier presents an imaginative and provocative adventure of epic proportions, to be taken with a pinch of salt and a handlebar moustache.

We caught this show at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014 and it was the best thing we saw at the festival. Funny, clever and very very silly it will be enjoyed by audiences who like the work of Living Spit and Shanty Theatre Company. One not to miss!

Lyme Folk Weekend has quickly become one of the most popular events of the summer, and one big reason is that the festival has been brilliant at unearthing some wonderful young local artists.

But you don’t need to wait until August. Come and enjoy an evening filled with music from a hand-picked line-up, as the acts who enchanted audiences last summer join forces to raise funds for Lyme Folk Weekend 2015.

Hosted by Devon folk singer and Lyme Folk favourite Jim Causley, the evening features performances from up and coming acoustic duo Morgan and Knapp, Lyme-based brother and sister act Six Days, singer-songwriter Lee Rahn, and the amazing family trio Aimée.

EMMA BALLANTINEWednesday 18th March

Emma Ballantine grew up in the market town of Salisbury, where a love of storytelling and musical influences, ranging from folk and jazz to classical music, shaped an early passion for songwriting.

She is now an established artist on the London circuit, having headlined at leading acoustic venues including The Bedford, The Troubadour and The Spice of Life. She has also been invited to perform at some of the UK’s most established folk festivals, from Sidmouth Folk Week in the West to Leigh Folk Festival in the East.

Emma launched her debut EP, Flying Machine Troubadour Club – her first appearance with her now regular group, The Emma Ballantine Band. Songs from the EP have been played on BBC 6 Music as well as a range of local stations from Resonance FM’s Tin Can Review Radio. She has also been shortlisted in a competition run by BBC Radio One.

Having worked with some of the biggest names in show business, he’ll be spilling the beans about Only Fools and Horses co-stars like Sir

ANGEL EXIT

Angel Exit Theatre, returning to the Marine following their productions of The Secret Garden and The Ballad of Martha Brown, will be working on two new smaller scale

productions. One is for under 8s and will premiere at Lighthouse Studio Christmas 2015. It will have a robin in it...and some snow.

The other is a show for small-scale touring about two friends on a road trip with a carload of stuff. What is the stuff? Who does it belong to? How will this trip change their lives?

The company will be working on one or both of these shows, and this informal sharing may include ideas for scenes from both. They hope to develop the stories over the week at the Marine, and find a way to continue Angel Exit’s trademark physical language with fewer bodies on stage.

BookendsSIMON & GARFUNKEL: THROUGH THE YEARSFriday 27th March

Following a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, receiving 4 stars from Broadway Baby, this is Bookends’ triumphant return to the Marine with their moving and powerful live performance and multimedia show that takes a chronological journey through the friendship and career of Simon & Garfunkel.

Following a BBC Radio tour, the show was described as

a “must see” with Bookends being labeled as the most authentic-sounding tribute to the music of Simon & Garfunkel.

Opening at the start of their career and ending at the much publicised break-up, the show features hits such as The Sound of Silence, Mrs. Robinson, The Boxer and the unforgettable Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Untied Artists presents The Boy Who Bit Picasso; an interactive

theatre show for everyone aged four to eight and their families. With storytelling, music and lots of chances to make your own art, this hands-on family show introduces one of the 20th century’s most influential artists through the eyes of a young boy.

VIVA SANTANASaturday 11th April

Returning to the Marine, this phenomenal 7-piece Latin rock explosion continues to amaze fans wherever they present their celebration of the music of the legendary Carlos Santana. Over the past eleven years they have played to full houses as diverse as the prestigious London Guitar Show Wembley to theatres and rock festivals in the UK, Europe and even Cuba. Soloist Marcos Rodriguez’s performance was described as “a musical bridge between

Cuba and Spain”. After seeing Rodriguez, an astonished fan said “When they made Carlos Santana someone forgot to break the mould!”

It’s all there, from the powerful 4-piece rhythm section (congas, timbales, drums and bass) giving the band its heartbeat of traditional and modern Latin rhythms, to the infectious Cuban piano and haunting Hammond organ wizardry of a truly gifted keyboard maestro.

Lyme Regis Dramatic Society

MURDER ON THE NILE BY AGATHA CHRISTIEWednesday 15th April – Saturday 18th April

Join the Lyme Regis Dramatic Society aboard the Nile River Cruiser during the 1930s to experience all the twists and turns, red herrings and assorted suspects in this classic Christie mystery.

Meet a vast array of passengers onboard from a newly married couple and their French maid, to a cantankerous single lady, accompanied by her put-upon niece.

All is well until a couple of days into the

cruise, when a newly wedded husband is shot and wounded. Almost before the good doctor can finish treating the gunshot wound, the new bride is found murdered in her suite.

Lyme Regis Dramatic Society have been entertaining local residents and holidaymakers since the 1950s.

So all aboard for a cruise through treacherous waters!

In a world where the British Empire never died, a hundred-year-old mechanical monster emerges from the waves, bent on revenge against its makers. As cities are torn up in its wake, the island marshals all its might against it, not knowing that the key to stopping its destruction lies with a small boy riding a bike northwards to his grandfather’s house, and a generational story that hides a terrifying truth.

An early work-in-progress showing of a new sci-fi storytelling epic by Jack Dean, inspired by Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man, featuring Capitalism, Zeppelins, and a fistful of furious whimsy.

Formed in 2012, Triptych is a trio consisting of Soprano (Rachel Louise Marsh), Cello (Kirsten Miller) and Piano (Phillip May). Having all studied at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Rachel, Kirsten and Phillip are indeed all experienced musicians in their own right, including individual performances with Welsh Sinfonia, Welsh National Youth Opera, Les Bougies Baroque and the Willow Orchestra.

Together, they combine to form an ensemble with a unique and captivating sound, having already performed at the illustrious Llandaff Cathedral and Crickhowell Music Festival.

Triptych were also chosen to be members of the highly prestigious Live Music Now scheme, which sponsors artists to perform regularly in public concerts as well as bringing music of a high level into venues such hospitals and schools for children with special needs.

Look out for the Lyme Regis Fossil Festival, visiting the Marine from 1st-3rd May 2015, as it celebrates its 10th Anniversary. The theme this year is ‘Mapping the Earth’ – celebrating the 200th Anniversary of William Smith’s ‘Map that Changed the World’ – the first ever geological map. A thing of beauty as well as a work of genius, we’ll have an original copy of the map in Lyme as well as lots of activities, exhibitions, music and theatre inspired by William ‘Strata’ Smith’s groundbreaking (literally) work.

The Marine Theatre’s youth theatre LYT is aimed at children and young people between 5-21 who love the theatre and want to develop their creative skills. Lead by LYT’s professional tutors, actors and directors, our young ensemble take part in fun yet challenging classes, learning acting through drama, text, movement, voice work, character building and devising; all of which combine to enhance confidence and nurture creativity.

LYT provides members with exclusive backstage access to a fully functioning professional theatre, enabling our ensemble to develop their skills whilst gaining an extensive understanding of all aspects of theatre life.

As if that wasn’t enough, LYT members also take part in workshops with visiting theatre companies, regular classes, National Theatre Connections projects (For more information see page 14)and can come along to selected shows for just £1!

BY ROADFrom the north and the west: Leave the M5 at Junction 25 and follow the signs for Honiton. From Honiton, take the A35 towards Dorchester and follow the signs to Lyme Regis. From the east: From the M3 take the M27 to Ringwood and then the A31 on to Dorchester. From Dorchester take the A35 towards Honiton and follow the signs to Lyme Regis.

BY RAILLondon Waterloo to Exeter St Davids, services call at Axminster (for Lyme Regis). Then take a bus connection to Lyme Regis.

ACCESSIBILITYThe Marine Theatre strives to make our facilities and performances as accessible to as wide an audience as possible. Whilst our venue is accessible to disabled customers, we are currently working hard to fundraise for improvements to our 118 year-old building that would dramatically enhance the experience of disabled patrons visiting the Marine Theatre. Our disabled toilet is in an adjacent building and our box office counter needs to be opened up to make it a more welcoming space. We regard the current situation as unacceptable. We always welcome feedback as how we can better work towards our goals and more details about the services we currently offer to disabled patrons can be found in our Accessibility Policy, copies of which are available on request. For patrons who are unable to attend performances unless accompanied, upon purchase of a ticket, an additional seat is available free of charge for the companion.
