Door Decorating

As a class, students will pick their favorite class book or book they are currently reading. The teacher will use student work to decorate doors, windows, etc. based on their class' selection. Admin will be the judges and announce the winner on Friday Feb. 1.

Reading Buddies

School wide buddy reading. Primary grades will partner with intermediate grades for a shared buddy reading experience. **Please see email for your class' reading buddy.

Wednesday 1/30/19

Flashlight Reading

Students will find a quiet spot in their classroom to read with the lights off and use a flashlight while reading a great book K-2 teachers can encourage their students to bring in a stuffed animal so they can read to it.

Thursday 1/31/19

"Reading In The Great

Outdoors!"

Students and staff will be permitted to bring a blanket or towel and read outside, on grassy areas, and or on the picnic tables.

Friday 2/1/19

Character Dress Up day

Students will dress up as their favorite storybook character. School appropriate attire. No masks, toy weapons, and shoes are required. If students have the book to go with their costume, encourage them to bring it in to share with their classmates

Celebrate Literacy Art Winner announced: School-wide ... students will celebrate literacy through exploring art! A winner will be chosen in each grade level by the leadership team. Their art will be display the magic of reading books it will be displayed in the front office for the month of February. (Rosetti)

Book Cover Door Decoration Judging: classes will have previously decorated their classroom door reporting on their favorite book. Judging will take place on this day.

Drop Everything and Read: students school wide will read independently for thirty minutes.

Buddy Reading: Classes will pair up with students from another grade level to participate in a school wide buddy read for 30 minutes.

Vocabulary Dress Up Day: students and staff will dress up like a vocabulary word. When asked about their word, they will be encouraged to define the word and use it in a sentence.

In addition to the activities listed on the document, one member from our leadership team will showcase a book on the morning show each day of the week. We will also have a scavenger hunt on campus and our book fair.

Daily activity: As a class, reread the grade level selected book. Students will use question stems (provided by CAS) to discuss the book. Kindergarten students will complete this activity with the help of the classroom teacher or paraprofessional. School wide DEAR time (drop Everything And Read). Stop and Read with a Friend • Students will get to pick a friend from their classroom to stop and

Guest Readers • The Leadership team, other staff members. and volunteers will go

into the classrooms. They will read a favorite children's book to their assign classroom.

School-Wide Reading Buddies • All Third through Fifth grade classes will pair up with a

Kindergarten through Second grade class. The upper level students will buddy read with the primary students during a designated school-wide time.

Character Day Parade • Students, faculty, and staff will dress up as their favorite character

from their favorite children's book. Then we will have a school wide parade to celebrate literacy.

Monday, All of the activities will connect to our school wide Literacy Theme "Reading January 28 uilds Character"

Teachers will review Character traits (such as Trustworthiness, Honesty, Gratitude, Kindness, Citizenship) in relation to characters in a favorite book and characters in CKLA stories. Students will then sign a Character Pledge Banner in the courtyard at lunch. Each day a Guest Reader will be on the Morning Announcements to read a story highlighting a character trait.

Wednesday, Be a Good Sport and Read! January 30 Students and Staff will be encouraged to wear sports team apparel. Teachers will

highlight stories, articles, and statistics about a sport, teams, or players to expose students to different genre of text and highlighting text features and how they help the reader to understand and enjoy the information presented.

Thursday, Hats Off to Reading January 31 Students and Staff will be encouraged to wear a hat in honor of reading literacy.

Teachers and Librarian will highlight stories involving hats and discuss the character traits of key characters within the story.

Friday, Character Parade February 1 Students and Staff will be encouraged to dress as their favorite character in a

story and carry a card identifying the character trait being represented. There will be a parade at the end of the day for all students to participate.

• Making Connections Linking Chains---Each class will create a "Book Chain" throughout the week as students finish reading a book (Kdg/l st can be done as a class ifnecessary). Students will create a "LINK" to add to their classroom "Book Chain". The link will include the following information: 1. Book/Story Title 2. Author 3. 'l~~r ,~Oakerest Elementary

OCE students will be expressing their "view of books" by wearing sunglasses

Students will be creating book spines, along with writing a summary about their favorite book. These book titles will be displayed outside of their classrooms, creating a book shelf for spreading the love of literacy with their favorite reads.

All across the campus, pictures will be snapped of our students reading their favorite books. Pictures will be posted on several bulletin boards, reminding everyone about the enjoyment of reading. "Reading our best life"

Reading is the foundation for an excellent education. Here at OCE, we will continue to build upon that foundation with a literacy rock garden. Students will design and paint their rocks, based on a favorite book. When we receive our "raised beds" in February, from FANS, we will be able to display our rocks for everyone to view, in our beautiful gardens.

ot only are students highlighted and pictured reading their favorite books across the campus, they are able to "like" the pie by displaying a "like" button sticker on the picture. This social networking will surely spread the love of reading.

Celebrate iteracy Week, Florida! January 28-February 1, 2019

Kick-off Principal, Mrs. Boston, will do the kick start on the morning news by reading a section of her favorite storybook.

D.E.A.R Da Drop everything and read day. Our whole campus will take time o curl up with a stuffed animal and read a good book.

Guest readers will come and read to a classroom. Guest speakers will include local high school students, PTO members and other community members.

odeled Readin Classroom mentorship program. 3rct, 4th and 5th grade classrooms will buddy with a primary classroom. The older students will ead to our younger students and model good reading strategies.

Then, our younger students will read to their mentor.

Wednesday, Guest readers are invited to Reddick-Collier and will go into all K-5 classrooms to

January 30 read to the students. The guests will include select school personnel, the local resource officer, local community members i.e., town mayor, firefighters, School Board Members, District Area I support members, etc. All readers will be invited to read at 9 AM in classrooms.

(date to be announced) The students, with teacher support, will facilitate comparing/contrasting the differences in watching the movie vs reading the book. Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! January 28-Feb 1, 2017

*Books Open doors - classrooms choose their favorite book and decorate their doors to show that book off. Winners will be chosen by grade level and the winning classrooms will get 5 books for their classroom library.

** DEAR - Drop Everything And Read - The whole school will participate in a DEAR time. (20 mins.)

*Read Across Saddlewood Day - Teachers and Students track pages read that day with a form that will be given out. We wilt tabulate the results and announce on the morning TV show how many pages Saddlewood Reads in one day.

* *DEAR Drop Everything And Read The WHOLE school will participate in DEAR. (20 mins.)

*FAIRY TALE and NON-FICTION Day - Classrooms will choose a Fairy Tale to read and then a Non-Fiction book to accompany it. EX.- Fairy Tale (Snow White) paired with Non-Fiction (Castles)

* *DEAR Drop Everything And Read The WHOLE school will participate in DEAR. (20 mins.)

*Unusual Book Day - Students, Teachers, and Adults will bring an unusual Book to school. An Unusual book is any book that is different - (an old book, a big book, a very small book, a book in another language, a book signed by the author, or some distinguishing feature that makes the book different)

* *DEAR Drop Everything And Read The WHOLE school will participate in DEAR. {20 mins.)

*Character Dress Up Day - Dress Up as your Favorite character from a book. (Costumes must be a character from a book* no weapons of any kind are to be included with the costume)

Monday, ookmark Contest! During Art class (throughout the week), students create January 28 a bookmark promoting READING! All bookmarks will be entered into one of two

categories: K-2nd and 3rd _5th. One winner from each category will be chosen and featured on the morning show. Copies of the winning bookmarks will be printed and enjoyed by all Shady Hill students.

Tuesday, Between Friends Readin Buddies Students read to other students January 29 from another grade level for 30 minutes.

Wednesday, Shelf to Yours Book Swa January 30 Students can drop off a gently used book in the media center in the morning. They

will receive a ticket to come back during their recess time to pick an interesting book to cherish. Books will be leveled into categories for K-2nd and 3rd _5th.

Thursday, Lunch and Literature! January 31 Tumble Books/Reading Rainbow stories to be aired in the cafe during

Lunch ... sparking new reading interests.

Friday, Hats On for New Books February 1 Bring a dollar to wear your favorite hat. All proceeds go to the media center for the

purchase of new books!

Monday, January 28 frica: Ansi and the Pot ofBeans Morning Show- Ms. Callaway will start the book Ansi and the Pot ofBeans on the morning show and introduce the theme and activities for Literacy Week. Lunch- Play the Youtube animated read aloud

Window Door Decoratin : Classrooms will choose their favorite book and decorate heir windows/doors to show off the book. Winners will be chosen by the

leadership team. The winning classrooms will get 5 books for their classroom library. Winners will be announced Friday afternoon before dismissal. See the attached rubric for more information.

Thursday, January 31 China: The Magic Pot Morning- Mrs. McConnell will start the book The Magic Pot on the morning show. Lunch- Play the Youtube animated read aloud

Friday, February 1 Dress as your favorite character- Students select a favorite character from a book to bring to life. Students dress-up to represent the character (no masks or props of any kind are allowed). Students must be able to provide the title of the book or bring the book for the character they are representing. In Class- Teachers will choose their favorite book to read aloud to the class. Lunch- The leadership team will choose their favorite books to play through Youtube

Windows will be judged by the leadership team and announced atthe end of the day.

Dino-Mite Readers! Book Fair & Parent Engagement Night


Cozy Up to a Good Book- Pajama Dress Day for students and staff. Students may bring a stuffed animal from home and read to it in the classroom.

School-wide shared writing reveal. Each K-5 classrooms will work throughout the week to create a school book that highlights different interactions with authors and book characters.


Students will receive a ballot and vote on the favorite morning show read aloud.

Tournament of Books begins! Each day, students will vote on their favorite "Mindset" book that has been read- aloud to them. Supplemental literacy lessons will be given to teachers for each of the books.

Guess the Reader Contest begins! Students can enter a contest where they must guess the mystery readers' names (pictures of staff members reading a book). Winners will be announced on Friday's Morning Show.

Students will bring a flashlight to school to participate in flashlight/black light reading

Sunrise students, faculty and staff will participate in flashlight/black light reading for 20 minutes at a chosen time during the day.

rom your class and enjoy a treat from WPE. The cafeteria will provide juice and cookies to students while they enjoy reading a book of choice. The snacks will be delivered to the rooms in the morning and teachers can choose when they want to have their students participate in this activity.

Throughout the week: Guest readers on the morning show & to classes throughout the week. *Door contest- decorate classroom doors like a favorite book character OR with something to promote reading that goes along with the theme of "Spreading Literacy, One View at a Time." Teachers are encouraged to read aloud and incorporate literacy activities in their curriculum during the week. Trivia Questions for students (Will provide answers during Announcements; submit answers to box in cafeteria, draw names for Prizes/books at the end of the week)

Teachers, staff, and administration will be on the look-out for students who are "caught reading." These students will receive bookmarks during Literacy Week. Students may be "caught" during breakfast, lunch, and in the morning as they wait for school to begin.
