Congratulations to Mrs Walker who has welcomed baby Charlie to her family, and Mrs Hsu who has welcomed baby Jozefien to her family. We look forward to meeting our new Marist additions.

Te Aroha o te Atua

Mrs Raechelle Taulu, Principal

From the Deputy PrincipalHearing the voice of our community is very important to the successful running of a school. In the last week of the holidays we surveyed the parent body and the staff about engagement reporting and, based on the feedback, we have made some changes.

The engagement reports will continue on a bi-weekly basis in a Week B. As we run a 10-day timetable, this allows teachers to have seen all their classes before the reports go out on the Week B Friday. There still might be some gaps when staff or students have not been at school, but these should be minimised by having a two-week period of reporting.

Discussion with staff about what constitutes engagement has led to the changes in criteria and the heading being used. From Friday 14 August, the engagement reports will be under the following heading and use these 4 criteria:

Engagement in Learning 4 Always completes classwork. Always on task. Manages self effectively.

3 Usually completes classwork. Usually on task. Usually manages self effectively.

2 Needs prompting to complete classwork. Sometimes on task. Can manage self but needs refocusing

1 Of concern. Needs constant reminders to stay on task. Not managing self effectively.

Student Retreats

Thoughts on Year 7 Retreat:During prayer time we reflected on all the nice things people have said to us and we made a clay token to symbolise it. Gracie GrinterI thought retreat would be boring and I wouldn’t enjoy it because I have never been on a retreat before, but oh boy I was wrong! Retreat was so much fun. Aslan PochingMy favourite activity was creating characters because it was fun to make someone and create their personality. Lila MannThe highlight of the day for me was creating a vision board because I got to learn more about myself. Overall, the retreat was a great learning experience for everyone. Soeun ParkI had a super marvelous time. All the Logos leaders were really nice and the kids in 7T too! Rylee DiazI had a great time and would like to do it again. Taylor ClaytonWe did lots of amazing group bonding activities but also spent some time alone, able to reflect on our lives.

Sophie JamesI will rate this day a 500 out of 10! Isabella Nand

Your daughter will need to meet all criteria for a number to receive it. If a student regularly receives 1, you can expect to be contacted by the classroom teacher, or Dean where necessary, to look at how we can support your daughter in engaging in her learning. There will be a crossover period this week as we shift to the new headings. You will receive Week 1 and 2’s engagement reports on Monday 3rd August with the current criteria before we shift to the ones above.

As you already know, live reporting of assessments is available on the Portal. Today you will receive a PDF summary of all results currently loaded there. This is useful if you want a printable copy, as it is not possible to print from the Portal. Parents of Year 11-13 students will also receive an NCEA summary showing credits gained and standards yet to be assessed. This summary will be sent out again in Week 8 – the live reporting for Years 7-10 and the additional summary for seniors.

The parent teacher interviews are also a great way to engage with your daughter’s teachers and have that vital face to face contact. Five minutes may not seem like a lot of time for an interview but used effectively it can make a huge difference to your understanding of your daughter’s progress. Good questions to ask a teacher could be: How readily does she pick up concepts in your class? What are her strengths? How is she tracking towards achieving standards offered? (for senior students) How could she be more successful in this subject?

We are very much looking forward to seeing you at our interviews and sharing your daughter’s learning journey with you.

Ms Lucy Hill Deputy Principal Administration

On Tuesday 28 July, we had a year 13 retreat at the Mt Albert War Memorial Hall. This retreat was run by the Logos team. It was so nice to see familiar faces again and to reconnect with each other. The retreat was a good experience as we got to reflect on our year and time at Marist

We learnt that school is a journey and that we need to remember the fun and challenging times we have faced together as a year group, for they all form our experiences at school.

It's the memories that we’ve made with the people we have met and grown with that have shaped our lives. These memories are something we will cherish and hold dear to us far into the future.

We were able to reflect on the fact that everything that happens at school is a learning experience that we can apply in our lives and the

lives of others, especially to the younger year levels in our school.

It was a great experience to just have the day to stop and think of how we can make the most of our last 14 weeks of school, and how to give back to the community that has continually nurtured and supported us through our time at Marist.

Thank you Logos for running such a reflective and eye opening retreat. This is a day we will continue to remember and look back on.

Love,

Palu and Maria

July Holidays Course Update

Special Effects MakeupI very much enjoyed going to the course and meeting lots of new people and building my skills with makeup. Especially SFX which was something kind of new to me.

I have never done it before but I have seen it done on people. When I went to the course I learnt skills about it and I then I put them into action.

Taylor Timmermans

STAR courses completed in the July holidays:• Nicole Bamfield – L3 Communications

• Kathleen Lasham – L3 Leadership

• Natalie McMurray - Leadership

• Kafo Filo’Atu – L2 Communications

• Taylor Timmermans – L3 Special Effects Makeup

CommunicationsI enjoyed this course and I have gained skills in communication that I will take with me into my adult life – NicoleI got offered a great opportunity to go on a communication course where I learned the different ways of communicating. This course helped me build my confidence even more and it is worth 10 credits. WOW! How cool is that and all you have to do is sit, listen and learn. So worth it. - Kafo

Gateway courses: First Aid and Health & Safety CoursesDuring the holidays while many of their peers were relaxing after the longest term ever, many Y12 and Y13 students were back at school, learning life skills and gaining credits in First Aid and Health & Safety. On Tuesday 14 July, 21 students undertook a full day course in Hazard & Risk Management provided by Safety n Action. Using the idea of organizing a “Colour Run” fun run event, the students had to plan a run route, identifying potential risks and planning steps to be taken to eliminate or minimize these. Successful completion will earn them 8 Level 3 credits to count towards NCEA.

Then on 15-16 July, 23 students attended a Comprehensive Workplace First Aid course, also held at school with a trainer from First Aid NZ. Students learned how to do CPR, the protocol “DRSABC”, what to do if tending to burns, breaks, and bleeds, and the signs to look for in conditions such as stroke, heart attack, diabetes, epilepsy, and asthma. They also covered a basic introduction to health & safety in the workplace. Most of the students participated as part of their learning for the Gateway work experience programme. Skills in First Aid and knowledge of Health & Safety are very useful in any workplace and are a bonus for a young person to be able to add to their resume.

The SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare FestivalWe have been having a busy but enjoyable time in the Performing Arts Department! Firstly, during Term One and Two, a group of students were involved in The SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival.

Unfortunately, due to Covid 19, things were done a little differently this year. Instead of performing live at the Auckland Central Regional Festival, students had to submit a video of their performance. We had three entries this year.

Laci Sampson, Danidi Wijethunga and Zara Bernard performed a scene from Romeo and Juliet. Meila Taie, Joyena Sun and Theresa Augsburg also performance a scene from Romeo and Juliet.

And finally, Grace Cartman, Elizabeth Bentley, Olivia Bear, Matariki Wikaire and Bailey McMahon directed and performed multiple scenes from The Taming of the Shrew. This final group received the Best Costume Design Award for Auckland Central and Grace Cartman received the One To Watch Award for Auckland Central.

Well done to all of these groups for the hard work they put into their performances and for staying committed despite the additional challenges this year. We hope to see you back next year!

Year 11 Drama Commedia dell’Arte and Year 12 Performing Arts Technology MasksLast week the Year 11 Drama class performed Commedia dell’Arte scenarios to other Year 11 students for their assessment. The class learned a lot about this theatre form and had a great time becoming Commedia dell’Arte characters and creating their own scenarios.

We were so grateful to have a few Year 12 Performing Arts Technology students make masks for our performance. Check out the photos of the performances and the masks in action!

2nd XI HockeyIt was great to see the girls finally get on the turf for the first game of the season. They played extremely well for having such a short amount of training. They all put in 110% effort and really played together as a team. Defence was working hard, and our awesome goalie Rose got player of the day for her great defence work!

The girls also showed great sportsmanship and did Marist proud. Unfortunately it was a loss of 5:0, but a great game to watch! Looking forward to next game.

Marist Junior Football Awesome game tonight with Marist Juniors winning 2:0 against St Dominics. We got off to a roaring start with Millie and Ava scoring goals and working excellent combinations and crosses. With that lead we gave players the chance to play in some new positions. In the second half St Doms were on attack, but Paige and our defence were up to the task. Paige even had a cracking shot from the deep. This earned her Player of the Day. Well done team.

NetballAll of our netball teams have officially started their competition! We had an amazing start with all of our girls getting out there and into the game.

Thank you to all the volunteers and parents that are a part of our Marist team. This weekend we have an undefeated battle between Marist Premier and St. Marys’ competing for a spot in the top three of our grade. All our senior girls are playing from 8am to 12:30pm, so please come along to support!
