Lets read Mark 3:1-6 4. Mark 3:1, A or The Synagogue? Mark 3:1 He entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered. NAS NAU Mark 3:1 He entered again into a synagogue... BYZ BGT Mark 3:1 Mark 1:21 They went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach. Mark 2:1 When He had come back to Capernaum 5. Mark 3:1, A Synagogue? Mark 3:1 He entered again into a synagogue; and a man was there whose hand was withered. Luke 7:1 He went to Capernaum. 2 And a certain centurion's slave, who was highly regarded by him, was sick and about to die. 3 And when he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders asking Him to come and save the life of his slave. 4 And when they had come to Jesus, they earnestly entreated Him, saying, "He is worthy for You to grant this to him; 5 for he loves our nation, and it was he who built us our synagogue." 6. Mark 3:2, Jesus Confronts Mark 3:2 And they were watching Him to see if He would heal him on the Sabbath, in order that they might accuse Him. 3 And He said to the man with the withered hand, "Rise and come forward!" 4 And He said to them, "Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save a life or to kill?" But they kept silent. Mark 2:27 Jesus said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. This is no mamby pamby Jesus! He gets right in their faces, confrontationally. 7. Mark 3:5, Stubborn Unrepentant Hearts Mark 3:5 After looking around at them with anger You never see Jesus angry at the poor sinners, only at the religious leaders. Not even with tax men, prostitutes, adulterers, only false teachers who lead people into hell. Matthew 23:15 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you travel around on sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves. I wonder how angry He is now, with all the false religions, cults, and false teachers? 8. Mark 3:5, Stubborn Unrepentant Hearts Mark 3:5 After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. Why would Jesus look with anger? This hardness of heart issue is not evidential, logical, rational, or even emotional, but a willer problem. Romans 2:5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, Ephesians 4:18 because of the hardness of their heart; 9. Stubborn Unrepentant Hearts Are A Love Problem John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. 17 "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through Him. 18 "He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 "And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their deeds were evil. 20 "For everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21 "But he who practices the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God." 10. Mark 3:5, Stubborn Unrepentant Hearts Dr. Henry Morris in Many Infallible Proofs, says, No matter what evidence is presented for the existence of God, it is always possible for the unbeliever to counter with some objection or with another question. No argument or combination of arguments can ever convince someone who does not want to submit to God. Even if he is completely overpowered and silenced by the arguments, he will still be of an unbelieving heart, and this is what really counts. "A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still." Nevertheless, the evidence is there! For a person who sincerely desires the truth and is willing to believe, there is an abundance of proof concerning the fact of God and the character of God. The evidence is such as either to completely satisfy an open mind and heart or else to irrevocably condemn an unbelieving heart. For the latter, the only acceptable evidence may prove to be the heavy hand of God's chastening judgments, and even this may only harden it yet more. 11. Mark 3:6, Destroy Him Mark 3:6 The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him. They couldnt defeat His logic, they couldnt defeat His Scriptures, and He confronts their error,-solution, kill Him. 12. Lets read Mark 3:7-12 13. Mark 3:7, A Great Multitude [2Xs] Mark 3:7 And Jesus withdrew to the sea with His disciples; and a great multitude from Galilee followed; and also from Judea, 8 and from Jerusalem, and from Idumea, and beyond the Jordan, and the vicinity of Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude heard of all that He was doing and came to Him. Matthew 4:13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet, saying, 15 "The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles-- 16 "The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great light, And to those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death, Upon them a light dawned." 14. Mark 3:7, A Great Multitude Exodus 12:38, A Mixed Multitude Jesus is no small town preacher. And many gentiles came to Him. Exodus 12:38 A mixed multitude also went up with them, along with flocks and herds, a very large number of livestock. ereb (786b) Meaning: mixture, mixed company Usage: foreign people(2), foreigners(2), mixed(1). 15. Jerusalem, Idumea, bey ond the Jordan, and Tyre and Sidon 16. Mark 3:10, All Those Who Had Afflictions Mark 3:10 for He had healed many, with the result that all those who had afflictions pressed around Him in order to touch Him. How many do you think He healed? Talk about a healing ministry!! Yet; John 6:66 As a result of this many of His disciples withdrew, and were not walking with Him anymore. 67 Jesus said therefore to the twelve, "You do not want to go away also, do you?" 68 Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. Matthew 16:4 "An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah." And He left them and went away. 17. Mark 3:11, The Son Of God? Mark 3:11 Whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, "You are the Son of God! Matthew 4:3 And the tempter came and said to Him, "If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread. Mark 1:1 the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Where are they getting this OT phrase? Proverbs 30:4 Who has ascended into heaven and descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has wrapped the waters in His garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is His name or His son's name? Surely you know! 18. Mark 3:11, The Son Of God? Psalm 2...Against the LORD and against His Anointed...5 Then He will speak to them in His anger And terrify them in His fury, saying, 6 "But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain." 7 "I will surely tell of the decree of the LORD: He said to Me, 'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. 8 'Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession. 9 'You shall break them with a rod of iron... 12 Do homage to the Son, that He not become angry, and you perish in the way, For His wrath may soon be kindled. How blessed are all who take refuge in Him! 19. Lets read Mark 3:13-21 20. Mark 3:16, The Twelve Mark 3:16 And He appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom He gave the name Peter), Mark uses the twelve more than any other book. There is the definite article in the twelve CSB Mark 3:16 He appointed the Twelve: With the definite article I think the CSB got it right, however the NET omitted the article The YLT NKJ KJV Mark 3:16 And Simon he surnamed Peter; The Bible Knowledge Commentary says, The Twelve became an official designation or title for those appointed by Jesus on this occasion (cf. 4:10; 6:7; 9:35; 10:32; 11:11; 14:10, 17, 20, 43) CSB NIV Mark 6:7 Calling the Twelve 24. Mark 3:22 The scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, "He is possessed by Beelzebul," and "He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons. Jesus doesnt defend Himself, but rather goes for their throat, exposing their failure in logic. What theyre saying doesnt even make sense. 30. Mark 3:22, Possessed By Beelzebul Mark 3:22 possessed by Beelzebul," and "He casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons." The spelling Beelzebub came into English translations from the Latin Vulgate which derived it from the Hebrew Baalzebub meaning Lord of the flies, the name of an ancient Canaanite deity (cf. 2 Kings 1:2). The Bible Knowledge Commentary 954 Beelzeboul {beh-el-zeb-ool'} Meaning: Beelzebub = "lord of the house" 1) a name of Satan, the prince of evil spirits 31. Mark 3:23-27, Jesus About Satan Mark 3:23Hebegan speaking to themSatan 24 a kingdom 25 a house 26 if Satan he is finished! 27 the strong man's house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house. Jesus refers to him as a real, sentient being, with a kingdom, the strong man's house, property, and he is not finished yet. Matthew 4:8 Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; Luke 4:5 in a moment of time. 32. Mark 3:23, Jesus Talks About The Ruler Of The Demons" Mark 3:23 And He called them to Himself and began speaking to them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan? [Satan used 2Xs] Some frequent questions about Satan; Where does Satan live, What does he look like? Does he live and rule in hell? Does he have a red tail and horns? Should we be concerned about him? Satan is the "god of this world" 2 Corinthians 4:4 The "the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience" Ephesians 2:2 So be careful how you speak of him, do not, Jude 1:8 despise dominion, and speak evil of dignities Jude 1:8-9 He is the "accuser of our brethren," Revelation 12:10 33. His destiny is Matthew 25:41 " into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels" He is a concern, 1 Peter 5:8 Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But Jesus is greater, 1 John 4:4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. 34. Mark 3:28, Blaspheme Of The Holy Ghost, Unforgivable Sin, Unpardonable Mark 3:28 "Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter; 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin "-30 because they were saying, "He has an unclean spirit. Anyone who rejects the calling of the Holy Spirit, the last time, cannot be saved. John 6:44 "No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him. These Jewish leaders had been shown all the miracles, deity claims of Jesus, fulfillment of all the prophecies, and yet they rejected Jesus. Without Him, no salvation! 35. Mark 3:29, Eternal Sin hamartano hamartano Meaning: to miss the mark, do wrong, sin Chuck Smith on Ephesians part one describes harmatia to miss the mark. It was used in an Old English archery game where the Englishman would try to shoot their arrows through a steel ring and whoever lost had to buy the beer and was known as the sinner. It didn't matter how sincere they were, how hard they tried, well-intentioned or well-meaning, they still missed the mark. James 2:10 , Romans 10:2 For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. 1John and Romans have the most NAS uses 36. Mark 3:17, God Can Use You In Spite Of Yourself Mark 3:17 and James, the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James (to them He gave the name Boanerges, which means, "Sons of Thunder "); Would you hire them to represent your company? Gods Power Is Perfected In Weakness God used Peter in spite of his failings Paul said in, 2 Corinthians 12:9 And He has said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness." Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. So dont look only at your strengths and weaknesses, instead consider what God can do through you. Remember Moses, Gideon, Peter, etc..
