At press time, this newsletter contained the most up-to-date
information on meetings and events. Please check with a
committee chairperson for any changes to scheduled events.
In the November tradition of expressing thanks, I’ll firstlook to the past, and acknowledge the Chapter leadershipthat has served before us. This issue looks at the contribu-tions of two of our past presidents, Eric Kramer and Mike
Borsuk. Their dedication, hard work and strong leadership, aswell as that of the other past presidents, board members andcommittee chairs, has helped to build the foundation that allowstoday’s Nassau Chapter to well serve its membership with wideselection of technical meetings as well as dynamic networkingevents. The longtime members among us can attest to the careerbenefits we’ve enjoyed from our participation. It’s now up to usto pass this important legacy on to a new generation of account-ants to keep the Chapter vibrant and strong.
Programs like October’s Mentor a Student Night, whichbrought aspiring accountants face-to-face with our members, and next month’s inaugural Young CPA Fair at the CrestHollow Country Club on Wednesday, December 8th exemplifythe professional benefits of membership. Our Young CPAscommittee chairs, Sam Pizzichillo and Julianne Carnevale, willbe hosting what is shaping up to be a great night for both youngCPAs and the Chapter. Representatives from the Chapter’s 20committees will be on hand that night to meet informally witha crowd of young and newly minted CPAs and CPA candidates.Sam and Julianne are tapping their networks to bring in a fullhouse of young CPAs, and we suggest you do the same.Whether you’re a seasoned professional or just starting out inyour career, please join us and support the Chapter. We’re look-ing for a terrific turnout and a meaningful experience for all.
We’re also asking for your attendance Tuesday, November9th at the annual Attorney-Accountant networking event at theCrest Hollow Country Club. This is a big event for the Chapterand the opportunity to meet informally with local attorneyscan result in significant benefits to your practice.
There is no shortage of important technical meetings thismonth, with two all day programs on the schedule the first week-end of the month. The Accounting and Auditing Committee

Have you ever visited the NYSSCPA web-site at www.nysscpa.org? If you have, you’velikely discovered a valuable source of informa-tion that supports and enhances your member-ship. If you haven’t, you really should check itout. A recent conversation with Lelia Dickenson, the NYSSCPA Chapter Relations Liaison fornon-CPE programs revealed the wealth of help-ful information available on the website.
“Once you log on, you have a list of differentoptions right across the top of the homepage,”explains Lelia. “You’ll find comprehensive FAEcourse listings, the latest news and events perti-nent to the profession, access to online editions ofNYSSCPA publications and other helpfulresources.”
Members can read and comment on NYSSCPA’s CPA.Blog, which can also be accessed through the homepage.
“We encourage members to participate. The blog is as useful asmembers make it,” says Lelia. “Take some time to review the avail-able resources—they’re there and we hope members use them.Even if you never click through from the homepage, there is still awealth of information available to the user.”
The website also has a link for up-to-date information on NewYork state’s accountancy reform law; an indexof NYSSCPA white papers on topics of partic-ular importance to the profession; commentletters to accountancy regulators and govern-ment agencies; webcasts, events and publicresources pertinent to society members.
Members may also log in to their pass-word-protected “Membership Data Center” byusing their NYSSCPA identification number.Through the membership data center, mem-bers can change their mailing preferences andkeep track of the CPE credits they have earnedthrough FAE courses, their committee servicelistings and their dues and contributionsrecord.
In addition to being the gateway to theNassau Chapter homepage, the “About Us”drop down on the Society’s homepage givesan overview of membership services, Chaptersand committees, and a staff directory. “It’s aquick way of finding things,” says Lelia. “Oneof the particularly good tools is the link for theChapter handbook. It basically answers all thequestions a committee chair might have andacts as a go-to resource for Chapter officers, board and committee chairs—but all memberswill find it helpful.”
CHAPTER SPOTLIGHT
www.nysscpa.orgMembers will also find the latest message
from the Chapter president, a link to a list of pastpresidents and various Chapter statistics on theChapter homepage, as well as the most updatedlistings of upcoming events and programs andonline links to register for them; an archive ofpast events, articles, Chapter leadership contactsand other useful information.
Did you know, for example, that theChapter’s Membership Committee Task Forcehas designated mentors who can help membersand non-members alike in finding the right com-mittee fit for their specific service lines andindustry specializations? There is also a free jobboard, on which members can post help wantedads when they’re looking to hire or post their
qualifications if they are looking to be hired. When attending a Chapter event, it is always prudent to check
the chapter website for any last minute changes of time, venue, ordate. The “Events” tab also includes a full schedule of FAE eventsin Nassau and Western Suffolk counties.

It would seem that attaining the role of president would bethe apex of one’s participation in the Chapter, and that rolewould be service enough for most people. Not so, it seems, fora number of the past presidents of the Nassau Chapter.
The commitments of John Kearney, Eric Kramer and MikeBorsuk, to name a few, clearly illustrate an ongoing spirit ofgiving back that continues to enrich and inform the organiza-tion. While John, a partner at Jaeckle, Kearney & Lepselter, was not available for an interview, he sent an email that wentright to the point. “You get back more from your participationthan you give.”
Eric Kramer, an attorney and CPA, andpartner at Farrell Fritz, concentrates his prac-tice in Trusts & Estates. He served asChapter president for the 2002-2003 Chapteryear, and is currently active in the PAC and asa member of the board of directors for thestate organization, as well as its strategic taskforce. A former contributing editor of theNew York State CPA Journal, Eric is also a
former chair of the Income of Trusts and Estates Committee(NYC) and former chair of the Estate Planning Committee for theNassau Chapter.
A Look at Past Presidents
Eric Kramer
Eric initially joined NYSSCPA as a young CPA working atDeloitte. When he left the city for a position at Margolin closeto 25 years ago, he joined the Nassau Chapter. He maintainedhis membership and involvement in the Chapter even whilestudying trusts and estates law evenings at St. John’s University.“I joined the Trusts and Estates Committee in Nassau and theIncome and Trusts and Estates Committee in New York.” (Heeventually chaired both committees.) “It was a cross pollinationof people’s ideas, recommendations and suggestions that helpedme to become a better practitioner, and still informs my prac-tice.” He continues to participate because, “In my profession Ialways need to find good people I can work with. Over theyears, I’ve developed colleagues and friends, and this enablesme to refer business to accountants. I know the people and trustthem. It has been a great rewarding experience. That’s why Icontinue to be involved.”
He urges members to contribute to the PAC. “Our biggestproblem with the downturn in the economy is getting moremembers to contribute. The lack of contributions has dimin-ished our ability to pursue the agenda of the NYSSCPASociety.”
Mike Borsuk (chapter president 1983-1984)first became active in the Chapter in the1970s, and maintains attendance at Chaptermeetings and the occasional technical work-shop 12 years into retirement. “As a youngCPA, I was looking to enhance my skills andknowledge, both in the technical sense aswell as for people skills. There’s an interest-ing balance. At the Chapter, we’re essential-
ly collaborating with our competitors. As members, weinstinctively want to help a fellow member or officer so we haveto learn to walk that line, both let our hair down and trust that noone is there to take each other’s clients or recruit their staff. As ayoung CPA, it was important to get a handle on this.
“The Chapter helped me develop better presentations andovercome the stage fright so many of us feel when we’re start-ing out. Younger people can benefit greatly from that experi-ence if they participate and serve on committees. They willdevelop invaluable skills that will hold them in good steadthroughout their careers. As I rose through the leadership, Itook on more responsibilities with tax and accounting issues aswell as non-technical topics important to the profession such ascontinuing education, mandatory CPE and the PAC.” Mike wasthe first Nassau Chapter representative for PAC. “It gave me anew perspective dealing with the state government. Issuesincluded accounting reform, mobility—I was in on ground floorand it was an important collaboration. The PAC had many pos-itive outcomes and I’m glad I was able to be a part of it by

In October, we were very fortunate to have Heidi Brundage of the AICPAPCPS speak on current human resource and client retention issues for CPA firmsand the impact on succession planning. Recent surveys indicate that client retentionand finding qualified staff are priority issues for firms of every size. Heidi addressedthese issues and provided practical solutions to member concerns, including waysto deal with obstacles now and for the long-term. She also provided practice conti-nuity resources.
Our Committee is celebrating its third year with our annual networking eventand cocktail hour Thursday, November 18 at the NCCPAP Tax Symposium atCrest Hollow Country Club. This makes it convenient for all CPAs who attend thatevent, and will introduce our activities to a new audience. NCCPAP will be hold-ing a post symposium reception from 5 – 7 PM. We have the room next door from6:30 -7:45, and those who attend NCCPAP can attend our event at no charge. Ifyou do not attend the seminar, the fee is $25, which covers attendance for bothevents. Our event provides an informal setting for practitioners to meet others whoare concerned about continuation of their practice in the event of sickness, disabil-ity or death and create opportunities that offer mutual benefits. A Look at Past Presidents
encouraging lawmakers to do what we felt was the right thing.I still occasionally meet with a government official on behalf ofthe Chapter.
“I went through the ranks and became director, officer andpresident, as well as president of the State Society for a year. The experience and responsibility were a challenge and I’mglad my firm gave me the time to serve the profession in thisway. It’s important that firms support membership—and manydo—despite the non-billable hours that result, because theiryoung people can gain valuable skills and mature in the profes-sion. What keeps me coming back is that as a past president Ihave a responsibility to keep supporting an organization thathas done so much for me. We’re collaborating in a profession-al organization and we have to act as professionals.
“New blood is the lifeblood of the Chapter. We’re a profes-sion of changing demographics and we embrace those enteringthe field. New ideas and energy can only help the Chapter andour members thrive.”
