Current Research Interests: Current research activities involve two areas of study:

1) Molecular Magnetic Materials. This area of research is conducted as a joint project with

Prof. Christopher Landee (Dept. of Physics, Clark University). Three classes of magnetic

material are under investigation. a) Synthetic Ferrimagnets: This project focuses on the

design and preparation of materials that exhibit bulk ferrimagnetism at room temperature.

The substances under investigation are bimetallic coordination polymers that are expected to

be transparent in a range of wavelengths in the visible and/or infrared. Their transparency

will allow these materials to be used as optical switching devices and for magneto-optical

data storage. b) Frustrated magnets: Frustrated magnets occur when competing interactions

lead to a degenerate ground state. Unlike other complex magnets with similar properties

(such as spin glasses), randomness is not a necessary condition for frustration. Since there

are few known examples of frustrated magnetic lattices, a clear need exists for new materials

and we have begun investigations directed toward the design and synthesis of a new series

of frustrated magnets. c) Low-Dimensional Heisenberg Antiferromagnets: The motivation

for this project was the discovery of high temperature superconductors (HTSC), all of which

contain copper oxide layers. A prominent theory for the origin of their superconductivity is

based upon the magnetic properties of these layers. However, it is difficult to study HTSC

directly since the magnetic interaction strengths are large and the samples are very sensitive

to impurities, oxygen levels, etc... Conversely, insulating analogues such as the coordination

polymer [Cu(pyrazine)2]n2+ have moderate interaction strengths and order magnetically at

convenient temperatures. We are systematically preparing model systems with varying

interaction strengths and interplanar exchange so that the properties of this important model

system can be studies in detail. Similarly, we have recently begun studies targeted toward

the preparation of novel quantum Spin-Ladder systems. Spin-ladders are unique systems

where theory predicts the existence of superconductivity in doped materials. Few spin

ladders exist with ordering temperatures in the appropriate range for many experiments

which prevents the testing of existing theories. We have prepared several new materials and

are continuing our work in this area.

2) The preparation and reactivity of transition metal-phosphine complexes with novel

structures. Amino-substituted phosphine oxides undergo an unusual thermal condensation

reaction with transition metal carbonyls. The products are cage-like molecules with

adamantane (or larger) skeletons made up of phosphorus, oxygen and metal atoms. In

addition, the bimetallic cage products undergo redox and substitution reactions which we

intend to exploit for metal-directed organic synthesis. The oxidized metal-containing

compounds involved here have two distinct properties: 1) there are up to three sites available

for coordination of organic ligands to be activated 2) The compounds are bimetallics with

the two metals available in either the (0) or (+2) state, hence they may show very unique

reactivity with a potential for application as stoichiometric or catalytic templates for organic

synthesis. This project is not currently active.
