Mark Morris Goes to the Opera
DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - The Mark Morris Dance Group has been
pleasing audiences for 30 years, and its "L'Allegro, il Penseroso
ed il Moderato" has been presented in 18 cities on three
continents. In short, it's not a new work.
This week, however, there is a new element to the oft-praised
piece. On May 5-8, the company bounds into Downtown Los Angeles
where it unites with L.A. Opera for the first time. During the four
performances at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 24 dancers will take
the stage to music by Handel while the L.A. Opera Orchestra and
Chorus, conducted by Grant Gershon, plays. There will also be a
quartet of singers: sopranos Hei-Kyung Hong and Sarah Coburn, tenor
Barry Banks and bass-baritone John Relyea.
May 5-8 at 135 N. Grand Ave., (213) 972-0711 or musiccenter.org.
