Portfolio 2011The work in this portfolio is a collaboration of the past seven years of my academic and professional life in the study and practice of urban planning. The majority of the work was done under planning professionals and professors, however there is a great deal of overlap be-tween the practices of urban planning, architecture, and other design and development fields. As a result, there is a wide variety of work from master planned projects to detailed hand renderings.

My portfolio is a look into some of the work I completed as both a students and an intern at various times and places throughout my education. It is meant to commu-nicate my graphic abilities as an urban planner as well as showcase my professional presentation style.

In this regard, I believe that the design of the portfolio is as important as it’s contents.

Quotes on Quality7

Quotes on QualityAn email sent by a senior landscape architect and proj-ect manager at Kimley-Horn & Associates to a poten-tial future co-op employer

“...Mark has co-oped for a second time with us down in Sarasota. He became an asset to the team and has a work ethic unparalleled among interns. I couldn’t rec-ommend anyone more highly for an internship position with your firm. If you don’t have an internship position, I would recommend that they start one and get Mark as their first intern, the experience will be rewarding for everyone.”

An email I received from the president of Kimley-Horn & Associates

An email I received from the Planning Manager, City of Milwaukee, Department of City Development

“Congratulations on your recent extra effort/teamwork award/ I appreciate your commitment to helping the team. Our ability to exceed our goals requires us to go above and beyond our normal duties from time to time. Your willingness to do this is an important part of out success. Thanks again.”

“Nice work on the Metro Place review and comparison to the approved detailed planned development. It dem-onstrated that you pay close attention to detail, which is greatly appreciated. Thank you.”

The goal when designing this block was to achieve an active community in which sus-tainability, affordability, and green building all exist.

A design revolving around cooperative housing resulted in common facilities, resi-dential management, shared open space, and a nonheirarchical participatory process by the residents. These are some of the characteristics that make cohousing both affordable and sustainable.

Green building techniques are found on the site through solar roofs, roof gardens, and thermal heating and cooling provided by the hillside, which some buildings are built in to.

The perspectives were rendered from a SketchUp model I created.

The Fruitville Corridor was a site planning attempt at recreating the public greens of Savannah while introducing a new street grid and preserving the ecologically sensi-tive adjacent bird sanctuary.

Mammoth Grove is a site plan I laid out which incorporated over 800 single fam-ily lots and a waste water treatment facility while retaining fifty percent of the site for open space and retention.

Lake Walk-In-The-Water Ranch, or Lake Weohyakapka as the native’s know it, is a development project in southern Florida. Along with the main planner, I assisted in the layout and rendering of the project. Unique features of the project include sen-sitivity to existing wetlands, the creation of an inland marina and canoe lake, and a fish-ing village consisting of fifty cottages and over 100 townhomes.

I rendered these graphics using Photoshop. The graphics are hand drawn conceptual plans that I digitized and then took into Photoshop to render.

This project was based on the conversion of an existing Big Box retail store to a Com-munity Recreation Center. While the walls and roof of the Big Box were removed, the original existing shell remained as a frame for the new reuse design.

The perspectives (right) were the main mar-keting graphics for the presentation to the Community of Collinwood, in Cleveland, Ohio. I created the perspectives after I digi-tized the master plan and floor plan, creat-ed by the lead architect. That process takes shape on the following page.

I generated the series of perspectives, on page 13 (SketchUp), to illustrate our trans-formation from a Big Box to a Community Recreation Center. Each slide adds a new room, or space, as the squenece moves to the final building schematic.

The Fondy Food Market is a seasonal market in inner Milwaukee. The surrounding neigh-borhood suffers from vacancies, blight, and disinvestment. As a result, there is a food desert in the neighborhood nine months of the year.

One strategy for revitalization of the neigh-borhood is to develop around the Fondy Food Market and introduce a year round grocery store as an anchor tenant adjacent to the market.

This site plan strives to create a new, mixed-use neighborhood surrounding a commer-cial, yet civic use. It also provides multiple affordable housing typologies and oppor-tunity for social interaction at numerous public plazas and parks. The new urbanist approach also retains an urban main street character along North Avenue.

These graphics were conceptualized on trace, digitized in AutoCAD, and rendered in Photoshop and SketchUp.

The Mt. Carmel neighborhood perspective is a graphic I completed as part of the Down-town Mt. Carmel Redevelopment Project in Union Township, Ohio. This rendering gives the client a birds eye view into the develop-ment proposal.

This graphic was completed using Auto-CAD, Photoshop, and hand graphics. After completing the linework for the develop-ment in AutoCAD, I printed it, traced it (add-ing the trees and roof lines) and scanned it back into a digital format. From there I was able to take the image into Photoshop for the final rendering.

This project was completed using 3D Stu-dio Max. The goal of the assignment was to produce a series of rendered images as well as a short fly-through which showcased the building’s main features and architectural significance.

The Mary Emery Center Apartment build-ing is located in historic Over-The-Rhine; a neighborhood just north of downtown Cin-cinnati, Ohio.

Revitalization and redevelopment of the Valencia Hollow area focused on the pro-motion of a safe, affordable community through sustainability that foster economic, environmental, and social diversity. It was the goal for this area to become populated to its fullest capacity and exist as a healthy, residential neighborhood.

These graphics were key pieces of the fi-nal redevelopment proposal because they illustrated how this neighborhood could grow stronger through infill development and strategic planning.
