Market dynamics – European market, week 30

Markets are low due to the general economic trend, the weather (which has been unusually dry during the whole month) and the summer holidays; prices are low for all products, particularly avocado, limes and, to a smaller extent, pineapples. Asparagus - Limited volumes and very high prices for overseas products from Mexico and Peru. Avocado – The market is oversupplied at an historical level with volumes from Peru, RSA and Kenya strongly above the average and prices about 20% below average; nevertheless, despite pressure from seasonal fruits, sales have kept a satisfactory level (helped by some promotions) even though not sufficient to absorb all volumes. The green market has remained out of the crisis, with stable and high prices. Dates – Multiple origins and varieties on the market due to the month of Ramadan. Kiwi – Limited supply: prices for New Zealand kiwifruit remained higher than last year while the demand for Chilean fruits, with higher prices in comparison to the last season, is lower than in 2013. Kaki – First arrivals of kaki from New Zealand. Lychees – Beginning of season for Israel. Limes – After several weeks of quotations almost 100% above the average because of the undersupply from Mexico, prices have strongly decreased and stand just on average with large price range.

Mango – Moderate volumes with multiple origins concurring strongly as summer fruits are preferred in this part of the year; prices have been just on average in the past weeks and are quite satisfactory in week 30, except for small sizes. Beginning of season for Israel. Pineapple – Difficult market, with big volumes and low demand; quotations are low, below the average or just on average depending on the country/market considered, with relatively small variations between big and small sizes. Quotations for top brands stand just about 1,00 Euro over the average price for standard brands. Passion fruit – Overstocked market but prices are remaining on average for now. Yam – Unusually large price range. The climatic context in July meant the crash of summer-fruit prices, particularly of peaches and nectarines, even though also melons were affected; quotations for stone fruits hardly reached 1,00 Euro/kg and stand about 40% below the production costs. Rainy and cloudy weather is meaning not only a lower demand but also not favourable conditions for the development of the fruits in the second part of the season. Stocks in the only region of Emilia Romagna (Italy) have reached 60.000 tons so that Italy, France and Spain have requested the European Union to intervene recognizing the gravity of the market context and taking adequate measures accordingly (retrieval of smaller sizes and lower quality fruits and compensation for losses).
