Manager’s Mutterings Today was the last market in September and numbers and prices were again up on previous years as was last month’s, onwards and upwards at Melton. Next month we have some exciting new ventures the first being our first Autumn store cattle sale on the 7th October. We have over 200 entries so far and still taking more, catalogues will be available at the end of this week. We have a further three more Friday cattle sales being 21st October and the 4th & 18th November. Also on the 8th October we hold our first catalogued/warranted quality Horse Sale, again entries now being taken on line and via the office. Please ensure you enter in good time and note that entries close on Wednesday 5th October with no entries on the day. Further details can be found here - http://meltonmowbraymarket.co.uk/premium-catalogue-horse-sale-8th-oct/ Now for today’s news nearly 5,000 head of sheep and 500 head of cattle. I had a new buyer around the prime cattle ring, who also bought 200 plus prime lambs as well and from speaking to him was very satisfied with what was bought and intends to see us again very shortly. The quality of the prime cattle was up on last week’s, with more quality butchers’ cattle still required. Stores and reared calves still in high demand as buyers wanting to fill yards to fatten. Please note next week is pig week and Barrie asked me to mention the sale time is 9.00am as afterwards he sells the baby calves. Tom reports a better than expected entry of fat lambs and trade to match. Buyers looking for meat and quality to fill their orders. Store trade has followed closely and the store lambs looking a very good trade. Next week is our Annual Ram Fair with a catalogue available on line. Some good quality sheep have been entered again. Looking ahead, Tuesday 18th October is our Show and Sale of Ewe Lambs, entries to Tom please.
There is no horse sale this weekend, as the Food Festival is held here, a tremendous event for the town. The standard horse sale will be held on 15 October, the weekend after the catalogue sale.
Cattle entered on Tuesday 4th & Friday 7th October from
J & H J Porter
Brian Kirby, Stretton It is with great sadness we report Brian Kirby passed away on 20th September. He was a great supporter of Melton Market and sold stock most weeks, he will be sadly missed. Our thoughts go to immediate family and friends. Funeral service
at 1.30pm on Wednesday 5th October at Greetham Church.

Cheques, payment and credit terms As payment technology continues to advance, we will be moving with it and looking to phase out cheques for payment over time. Our BACS payment run now goes out on Wednesdays and with faster payments will now credit your account ahead of any cheque payments made on the day. Not having to wait for cheques should also improve queuing times for you on market days. For those who do not currently receive payments by BACS, please provide your bank account details to the office in person, by phone or by [email protected]
We are also pleased to confirm that we will now be paying out for all livestock sellers, both stores and fat without delay, whether by cheque on the day or BACS the day after.
As far as credit given by the market is concerned, this remains the single biggest risk to the future of livestock markets across the country and a continual drag on management time. We will therefore be changing our standard terms to be payment on the day for both fat and stores with effect from Tuesday 6 September. Those who wish to receive credit from the market will need to agree terms with us and be subject to credit checks and security requirements. Existing arrangements will be honoured for now, but will be subject to adjustment in future. All other terms, including unauthorised credit at 15% plus costs, will remain as they are now. These changes make our overall terms of business more consistent, fairer and more sustainable on behalf of all our valued customers and we trust they will be supported by you all.
Should you have any questions, please speak to your auctioneer or Hugh.
