Hayes , CFA Lawrence Capital Management The views expressed in the “Market View” are those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of the Aluminum Association Aluminum prices moved higher during an abbreviated Easter Holiday week. The LME cash price closed at $1932/mt (88¢/lb) on Friday, up 2% from the end of the previous week. Prices received support from a decline in production. IAI data showed global output fell to an annual rate of 59.3 mmt in March, down 2% from February. Most of the decline came from China, while production for the rest of the world was off slightly. Output has now fallen for two straight months after reaching an all-time high in January. Declining production has helped to keep the aluminum market in deficit so far this year. Visible inventories are down more than 0.2 mmt year to date. All of this decline and then some has come from LME stocks. They are down in excess of 0.5 mmt, which has more than offset a near 0.4 mmt surge in inventories on the Shanghai Exchange. Another sign for the market is a less torrential flow of metal from China. Its net exports of semis were around 200 kmt in February. While still high, the amount was down considerably from the approximate 325 kmt of product that flooded the market in January. Key economic data in the U.S. in March was clouded by weather. Housing starts fell to a worse-than-expected 1.215 million units (seasonally adjusted annual rate), off 7% from February. Activity had already been pulled forward during a mild January and February, and a blizzardly end to winter skewed the figures even more so in March. Meanwhile, industrial production was up 0.5%. But the cold snap, especially when compared to a relatively warm February, caused a surge in utility usage. Other parts of the IP report were more concerning, namely the 0.4% drop in manufacturing activity. This report is based on information reported to the Association by participants, which is aggregated by the Association.
