Every seat was filled, the wallswere lined with people and home-made signs waved from the crowdas hundreds turned out to showtheir support for Evesham Super-intendent John Scavelli Jr. whenthe Board of Education voted onwhether to offer him a new five-year-contract at a special meetingon Feb. 25.
After the board spent nearlytwo hours listening to those in at-tendance cheer dozens of Eve-sham teachers, administrationmembers, faculty, parents andresidents as they extolled thevirtues and integrity of Scavelli,the board agreed with the crowdand voted to have Scavelli contin-ue as superintendent, elicitingthe longest and loudest cheers of the night.
For the past few weeks, some inthe district believed some boardmembers might not vote to offerScavelli a new contract. A peti-
tion was started urging the boardto keep Scavelli, and Scavelli him-self waived his right to a privatehearing.
One person who spoke at themeeting was Evans ElementarySchool Principal Nick DiBlasi. Hesaid the past year was difficult atEvans for obvious reasons, butabove all, Scavelli was always

Driving while intoxicated is avery serious violation of state law
and is taken seriously by the en-tire Evesham Police Department.
Police officers will utilize ap-propriate traffic control devicesto facilitate roadside checks in ac-cordance with departmental poli-cy and law.
Motorists traveling on the se-lected roadway(s) will be asked toslow down and even stop duringthe course of a checkpoint.
Police will make every effort tolimit traffic delays. Motorists areasked to be patient and cooperatewith such proactive measures ina police-public partnership onmaking Evesham roadways safer
for everyone.The departments goal is to pre-
vent motorists from driving whileintoxicated.
Drunk driving enforcementfunds collected by the court sys-tem will be used to fund theseDWI enforcement efforts.
The aforementioned check-points will possibly be opera-tional through April 1. The exactlocations, dates and times will notbe revealed at this time. Howev-er, potential areas of operationwill possibly be major roadwaysand state, county or municipalthoroughfares that pass throughthe town.
More specifically, roadwayssuch as State Highway 73, StateHighway 70, Maple Avenue,Greentree Road, Evesboro-Med-ford Road and Marlton Parkwaywill possibly be utilized.
All checkpoints will be highlyvisible at the time of execution.A letter of request and justifica-
tion specifically indicating theexact location(s), date(s) andtime(s) will be on file with thechief of police.
Concerned citizens are alwaysencouraged to report erraticand/or DWI driving to local au-thorities.

Evesham residents now havesome updated tentative numbersfor what they could be paying inschool taxes for the 2014-2015school year.
Evesham School District Su-perintendent John Scavelli Jr.gave a presentation on the tenta-tive budget at the Feb. 27 board of
education meeting and said withfinal state aid numbers increas-ing .65 percent, total preliminaryappropriations for 2014-2015 budg-et were $70,111,286.
To reach that figure, the dis-trict would require a 2.1 percenttax levy increase. With an aver-age home assessment of $270,200,the proposed increase per averagehousehold would be $85.02 a year.
The board will be using a
health benefits cost waiver to goabove the states 2 percent cap,and it does not necessitate a sepa-rate vote from the budget, offi-cials said.
The board approved a resolu-tion to adopt the tentative budget.
Another topic covered at themeeting related to the Feb. 18meeting of the Evesham Town-ship Council where a discussionon health-care benefits concern-
ing the school district took place.At that meeting, the council
held a discussion on the benefitsit believed could be achieved byhaving the school district enterinto a shared services agreementwith the township regarding thetownships partial self-insurancehealth-care plan.
Several school board membersattended the Feb. 18 council meet-ing, and at the school board meet-
ing, those members continued tovoice their concerns especiallyregarding a private meetingMayor Randy Brown said tookplace between the township, someschool board members and An-derson, Jackson, and Metts Insur-ance Management, the companycurrently running the townshipshealth insurance plan.
Board member Lisa Mansfieldsaid the board only acted as a
board when all nine of them weretogether and asked her fellowboard members about that pri-vate meeting.

There was never one secondthat went by that we didnt be-lieve what the man was saying,DiBlasi said. He is the epitome of integrity Ive never workedwith anyone with more integritythan John Scavelli.
Dianne Snyder, a resident, par-ent and district employee who
Scavelli hired as his secretary in2008 when he held the position of business administrator, said sheadmired him for his core valuessuch as integrity, honesty, intelli-gence, fairness and his desire toalways do what was right.
Since John became superin-tendent, Im happy to say Johnhasnt changed, Snyder said.He is still a hard worker, honest,fair and dedicated to the students,staff and to his family. He is aman of principle who does notbend to political pressure.
At the beginning of the meet-ing before public comment, twomembers of the nine-memberboard removed themselves from
the discussion and vote becauseof laws regulating who can voteon hiring matters if board mem-bers have relatives working forthe district.
When it came time for the finalvote, William Donio, the boardssolicitor, said even though onlyseven board members had theability to participate in the votebecause two members removedthemselves, legally the vote stillrequired a majority of the fullnine-member board to vote affir-mative for it to pass.
That would still need a major-ity of the roll call of the entire
board, the entire board meaningnine members of the board,Donio said. So for any motion topass perfectly with regard to thechief school administrator, itwould require five affirmativevotes.
Board member Dave Silverspoke to Scavelli directly, reflect-ing on what he had heard frompeople over the past moth and thecrowd that evening. He comment-ed on the agreements, disagree-ments, pleasantries and frustra-tions of their relationship.

The Evesham Education Foundationheld its third annual Wine, Dine & Win!event on Friday, Jan. 31. The event was at-tended by more than 400 attendees and byevery measure was a success. Attendeessampled hundreds of wines from aroundthe world and fine foods and had the oppor-tunity to try lady luck playing games suchas blackjack, roulette and craps for the op-portunity to win tickets for our basket auc-tion featuring more than 50 basket prizes.
This event would not be possible withoutthe help and support of so many individu-als and businesses in the town. Lastly, we want to thank allof the many attendees for coming out, hav-ing a great time and giving us the financialsupport we needed. The Evesham Educa-tion Foundation was formed in 1995 by agroup of concerned residents and businessleaders for the purpose enhancing the edu-cational opportunities for all students inthe Evesham Township school district.Over the years, the foundation has con-tributed well more than $1 million to fundprograms such as Coordinated Arts Pro-gram for Primary Students, Genesis Coun-seling Program and The Metamorphosis
For the past few years, Gov.Christie has been bold andstraightforward with his push
for reform, tax cuts and hope duringhis annual state budget address.
Last week, he was anything but.Instead of painting a rosy picture of
a bright future for New Jersey,Christie stuck to reality and seemedto cast a potential dark cloud. If wedont do something about pensionssoon, well all be paying for it dearlylater, is what he said.
Christies proposed $34.4 billionbudget includes a full payment of $2.25billion for state workers pensions. Buthe said that changes he made to thepension plan a few years ago arentdoing enough, and said that too muchof New Jerseys spending goes towardwhat he called entitlements, a
phrase his opponents, and union lead-ers, obviously took exception to.
With our long-term obligationsonly set to increase in the comingyears, the problem will not go away byitself, he said. We cannot wish itaway. We cannot make it go away bymagic. What we must do is what wewere sent here to do by the people to
lead and to act decisively again.Democrats responded by saying that
the pension reforms are working justfine, and time will prove that every-
thing is A-OK.Were not so sure that the system
will simply fix itself, but we also dontnecessarily agree with Christie thatmore major changes are needed rightnow.
What we do agree with is that more
spending cuts need to be made some-where. The state needs to get out of debt or at least move closer back toeven and it needs to do so soon.Local county governments, municipal-ities and school districts need to sharemore services to cut spending withoutcutting quality of services and thestate needs to provide these entitieswith the ability to do so.
So what to do? Who really knows?While making more major changesmight be the answer, sitting back anddoing nothing isnt either.

At the Feb. 18 council meeting,AJM Insurance said it still need-ed additional information fromthe school district to put togethera formal outline.
In other news: At the school board meeting
there was also a decision con-cerning weather-related make-upday revisions to 2013-2014 schoolcalendar.
As of the Feb. 27 meeting thedistrict had five days to make up.If there are no more school can-cellations due to weather pastFeb. 27, the district will stick to
the following five-day make-upplan: Day one on Friday, June 20,day two on Friday, April 25, daythree on Thursday, April 24, dayfour on Wednesday, April 23 andday five on Tuesday, April 22.
If there are more snow days,the district will move into a six-10day plan. With a potential sixthmake-up day falling on Monday,June 23, Scavelli reasoned thatsince the district would alreadybe bringing kids back for thatfinal Monday in June, it would besmarter to also bring kids backfor Tuesday, June 24 to returnApril 22 to a day off and alleviate
some of the burden on familiestrying to deal with plans for thespring break holiday.
Any potential seventh cancella-
tion would reclaim April 22 as amake-up day, with make-up daysbeyond that following throughthat final week in June.
Silver said he personallythought teachers and kids wouldbe worse off the longer they wentinto June. Mansfield called it ano-win situation and said eitherway people would be unhappy.
The schedule as outlined byScavelli passed 5-2, with JosephFisicaro Jr., Trish Everhart,Joanne Harmon, Mansfield andNichole Stone voting yes, andJoseph M. De Julius and Silvervoting no.
The board also debated wait-ing to approve the EveshamTownship School District missionstatement and tag line.
Silver said he had concernsabout adopting the mission state-ment without further input fromthe districts marketing and com-munications consultants. Scavellicountered that the people whocrafted the statement followed theprocess that was in place and de-laying adoption would send a badmessage.
The debate continued betweenseveral board members, with theboard ultimately approving themotion to postpone adopting thestatement.

They were: Joseph M. De Julius,Trish Everhart, Joanne Harmon,Mansfield and Silver. Kevin Stoneand Nichole Stone abstained fromthe vote when it was held. Nomember voted against.
Board President Joseph Fisi-caro Jr. and Sandy Student werethe two members who abstainedbecause of relatives working forthe district.
After the vote and cheers, Scav-elli said he was overwhelmed bythe comments, kindness andeverything the crowd said abouthim. He specifically commentedon the teamwork many of the
speakers had referenced.I think thats a testament to just everything that were doinghere every day, Scavelli said. Iappreciate the comments aboutteamwork and working together. Itruly dont look at people asthough theyre my employees ormy staff or they work for me. I re-ally do look at it as we work to-gether.
