Cherokee High School football is gear-ing up for the new season and the begin-ning of preseason camp.
The Chiefs finished 7-3 last year, miss-ing playoffs. It was a disappointing fol-low-up to the 2010 undefeated statechampionship season. Currently, theteam has begun practicing and ispreparing to move forward, tackling thenew challenge of a young squad.
The biggest challenge we have thisseason is inexperience, we have very
few returning starters. We have a lot ofyouth coming up and they have to learnfast in order to compete in our confer-ence, said head coach P.J. Mehigan
A total of four returning starters arecoming back this year including two
juniors, tight end Jake Powell and leftback Ryan Seward. And two returningseniors, offensive guard Drew Wilhelmand defensive back Tyler Miller.
This year we dont have a lot of re-
turning starters, weve got to startfresh, Miller said. Its going to take a
lot of work but its worth it.Cherokees first game will be played
the first week of school versus intra-dis-trict competition Lenape who went 4-6in 2011.
We cant be looking any further thanour first game. Our first game is againstLenape and theyre in the South JerseyGroup IV conference, the West JerseyLeague like us, and there are no gim-mies. Every game is a tough game, and I
think we have one of the toughest sched-ules in South Jersey. We need to go each
week one at a time, said Mehigan. The Chiefs started the off-season lift-
ing and prepping for on-field practices.According to Mehigan, the team hasbeen looking strong in the weight roomand a lot of newcomers are competingfor jobs, creating an intense work atmos-phere.
All around we lost a lot of guys so we

Burlington County MosquitoDivision has been taking precau-tions throughout the summer inan effort to prevent cases of West
Nile Virus infecting both animalsand residents in the area.
So far, 17 positive cases of thevirus have been discovered in thecounty, two of which tested posi-tive in Evesham.
The number of WNV positivesamples is slightly higher at thispoint in the year when comparedto last in Burlington County, epi-demiologists Tom Verna andKristen Bartlett-Healy said viaemail.
Through the precautionstaken, the virus has been detecteda month earlier than previousyears.
The county has been utilizing
safeguards by spraying areas de-tected with the virus.
In addition to spraying for theadult mosquito population, the
county targets and eliminates theimmature stages of the mosquito. This is accomplished throughwater management, biocontrol, and pesticides, Verna andBartlett-Healy said.
The county has been taking ad-ditional action by attempting toeducate residents through provid-ing information at various mu-nicipalities. The county edu-cates the residents about mosqui-to-borne viruses through pam-phlets that are sent to each mu-nicipality on an annual basis. This information is typicallyfound at the local library or mu-nicipal building, Verna and
Bartlett-Healy said.According to the Center for

If you purchased your house before
2007, youve probably endured
about five years of misery. Your
home probably isnt worth as much as
it was back then. The housing market
has been kicked around, the news al-
ways seemed to be bad and getting
worse, and people had to wonder if the
downward spiral would ever end.
Well, maybe it has.
Zillow reported last month that the
second quarter was a good one for
home prices. They actually went up
year over year. Not a lot, but up is bet-
ter than down.
And, considering the economy has-
nt exactly been on fire, the news is es-
pecially promising.
If the trend continues, its great
news for the economy.
From a purely practical standpoint, rising values can free up equity (al-
though it might take awhile to get peo-
ple right side up on their home val-
ues). Then, homeowners can begin to
tap that equity to make repairs, pay off
other bills, etc. And when people spend
money, jobs are created.
It also would be a boost to the nation-
al psyche. A homes worth long has
been a kind of security blanket for
families. Over the years, there had
been ups and downs in the market, but,
again, over time, home values steadily
increased. There was a confidence that
you could always rely on your biggest
investment: your home.
That, of course, all changed about
five years ago.
Thats not to say that all will be well
by next Tuesday. The glut of foreclosed
homes, the negative equity many
homeowners still have and the like will
continue to weigh on the market. Were
not seeing a dramatic, sudden turn of
fortune. But the kind of sustained
growth Zillow reported definitely beats
the alternative.
At the least, maybe homeowners
have seen the worst of the housing
storm. Maybe they begin to regain a
little confidence in the future of their
home. Maybe they can relax. A little.
in our opinion
Out of the basement? After years of declining prices, housing market looks to be headed up
Housing prices are up
Homeowners have been waiting for fiveyears or more for the news that wasreleased late last month: Housingprices are inching up. Maybe the worstof the housing storm has passed.

Disease Control, only about 80percent of those infected withWNV will not show symptoms.
The majority of people that doshow symptoms will experienceflu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, nausea, orvomiting. However, serious neu-
rological symptoms can developin less than one percent of thoseinfected, including high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation and coma. Theycan also experience tremors, con-vulsions, muscle weakness, vi-sion loss, numbness and paraly-sis, Verna and Bartlett-Healysaid.
Since 1999, more than 30,000people have been affected by theWNV in the U.S. This year alone,693 cases have been reported in
people, birds and mosquitos. Ofthose cases reported, 26 deathshave resulted, according to theCDC.
Theres no treatment for WNVsince it is a virus and the symp-toms need to pass, says Verna andBartlett-Healy. However, in some
cases, the person suffering fromthe symptoms may need to be ad-mitted to a hospital to treat themwith an IV, breathing assistanceand pain medications.
To help avoid an increase in themosquito population, residentscan take precautions by followinga number of easy steps.
To start, make sure there is nostanding water on the property. On average, mosquitoes typicallytake one week to develop from egg
to adult, Verna and Bartlett-Healy said. Flushing bird baths, keeping pumps or aerators in or-namental ponds running proper-
ly, and cleaning clogged guttersare just a few steps the homeown-er can take to reduce mosquitopopulations. Mosquito larvaeneed a constant source of waterto survive, Verna and Bartlett-Healy said.
To report larger cases of stand-ing water, contact Mosquito Con-trol office at (609)265-5064, for ad-ditional information from thecounty, visit www.co.burlington.nj.us/mosquito for more informa-
tion. For more information on theWest Nile Virus visit the CDCswebsite at www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/index.htm.
