SSpring. This is my favorite time of theyear. I want to clean up the yard, wash thewindows, go through the closets, andredecorate the house… Where do I start?

First I’ll call my yard man to clean theflower beds; then I’ll call a window cleaningservice to do the windows. You thought I wasgoing to spend my time doing manual labor?No, I want to do the fun stuff!

Let’s start with the closets. By the way,there are resale shops that provide closetcleaning service. Resale/consignment shopsare now looking for spring/summer clothing.Review last year’s wardrobe. Don’t forget thekid’s closets and also your husbands. Decidewhat is wearable this spring and summer andsort the rest into three piles. The nicest stuffgoes to a resale shop. The second nicest goesto the thrift shop. The third pile goes into thegarbage. You are shocked? You think thatthrift shops take anything and find some usefor items that are soiled, faded or worn outwith holes, missing buttons, etc.? This is nottrue. In fact, sorting and disposing of saiditems cost them time and money. Yeah, I knowit’s confusing, because they always smile andthank you for whatever you take to them, butyou should hear them in the back room…

Some of you already have a resale shop ofchoice that you consign with. Even so, it isbest to call first to make sure they are ready totake spring and summer items. If you havenot consigned before, first visit the shop youthink would be interested in your clothes. Ifyou have high couture clothing, for example,look for a shop that specializes in sellingthem. Ask if they routinely list on eBay, to geta better price for your things.

Children’s resale shops are under the gunnot to sell items that might contain lead orhave been recalled by the Consumer ProductSafety Commission (www.cpsc.gov). Checktheir website to make sure toys, clothing,furniture and other child accessories are noton the recall lists.

Ready for the trip to a resale/consignment shop? First, find out theirschedule for accepting consignments, andhow they want the clothing brought in. Mostladies shops want clothing on hangers to“preserve their pressed look.” Somechildren’s shops prefer little tots clothing laidout flat with no hangers. The savvy shopsaccept consignments anytime they are open to

accommodate consignors, but many shopslimit the days or hours or require anappointment.

Shops selling furniture and home décorare very popular. Want to get rid of yourdining room set? Bedroom set? Tired of yourlamps, coffee table? Resale furniture storesusually require you to show them a picturebefore they allow you to bring in consignmentfurniture and have strict forfeit rules aboutreclaiming items that did not sell.

Always read the contract beforebringing merchandise to a resale shop. Howand when will you be paid for items sold?Each shop has its own method of payment.Some shops pay cash or give credit ondemand and others have a strict schedule formailing checks or ask you to pick it up. Whathappens to items that do not sell? Some shopsdo not return them or charge a fee to returnthem. Others ask you to find your own stuff atthe end of the consignment period. Whichpolicies appeal to you?
