Peter Jackson’s Healey at Bathurst.

Sunday. Peter’s Sprite was also damaged in 2018 on the very tight short course where a case of “red mist” for some of the drivers is com-mon. The Corvette driver re-entered the track in a rush after spinning and collided with the innocent Sprite. Peter then discovered major rear brake issues on completing the Saturday afternoon race and “retired hurt”, unable to fix the problem at the track -Rod.Peter Williams in his Brabham did not finish his race on Saturday but returned on Sunday and had a much better day completing both races. ( In fact Peter finished third outright in the final race after starting rear of grid on Sunday morning after his DNF on Saturday. He must have had some fun working his way through the field – Rod.Sunday was a bit cloudier but still pleasant and there were a few more Healeys around and quite a few members. Jim Reddy had made the trip up in the Healey with Peter Parsons and Richard Stephens had his Healey there. Russell Baker was a spectator as were Ross Hodges and Geoff Parkinson . In regularity, even though Hugh Purse and Frank Hook both adjusted their nominated times on Sunday they were still unable to match them (too fast again

for Hugh) and they both were well down in the results in their first run but did improve in the second run for the day. Hugh came 21st, 18th and 21st in a field of 30 cars in the three events. Hugh became progressively faster, doing 1.24s by Sunday afternoon, well under his nominated lap time of 1.28 on Saturday and 1.26 on Sunday. His fastest lap of 1.24.13 might have in-curred a penalty BUT gave him a new PB at Winton. His previous best was set way back in 2009! Shane O’Brien enjoyed being pit crew for Hugh and Frank and has sent a couple of photos to me which I hope appear in the magazine. Shane really enjoyed listening to Hugh, Frank and Jim McConville reminiscing about Healey racing in days long gone while having a quiet couple of early whiskeys back at the motel on Saturday night. Someone said it was National Whiskey Day but I checked and I can’t find that on any internet calendar! – Rod.As usual the Adelaide members John Read, John Veale and Dave Woolard made the trip across and there are always a lot of South Australians at this meeting. The Minis were the highlight as far as sedans go and there were 14 in the all Mini event.

Great weekend and I’m sure there were other members there that I have failed to mention.POINTS TOWARD AHOC COMPETITION CHAMPIONSHIP for Healeys and 4 fastest lapsPeter Kaiser (Sprite) 993 pts 1.11.64, 1.11.67, 1.11.69, 1.11.71Hugh Purse (100/4) 888 #1.24.13, 1.24.36, 1.24.70, 1.25.25POINTS TOWARD ASSOCIATE CHAMPIONSHIP for other marques, and 4 fastest lapsPeter Williams (Brabham) 895 pts #1.09.65, 1.09.67, 1.10.70, 1.10.70 # denoted new fastest lap (First time on short course for Peter Williams)

Alfa Romeo Club WintonSprint 2 JuneSHANE O’BRIEN RETURNED to Winton in his new 100/4 four weeks after our MSCA round in May. Shane is really enjoying sorting the Healey and is competing regularly in 2019. He was flying back on 5 May with a best lap of 1.42.02 and this time improved to a super quick 1.40.18! No changes to the Healey, just going faster as he feels more comfortable with each event. He only did two and a half sessions, dealing with leaking rear brake seals and then finally halting with a

broken axle. He is looking at a stronger diff and axles to cope with the power of the Tate Engi-neering developed four cylinder. Shane is keen to be part of Team Healey at the Winton Relay in October and is working to resolve these issues now.POINTS TOWARD AHOC COMPETITION CHAMPIONSHIP for Healeys and 4 fastest lapsShane O’Brien (100/4) 894 pts #1.40.18, 1.40.36, 1.40.76, 1.41.24 # new fastest lap time How fast is 1.40.18? Well 1.40 is the fastest lap time allowed at the 12 Hour Relay, break that once and you are warned, break it again and you pack your bags and go home. To illustrate where Shane now sits in the Team Healey Winton times this is my list of best lap times under 1.50 by AHOC members according to my records. Let me know if I have made an error.Shane is sitting 6th on this list already. Well done. Of course we are comparing different eras and the track is at least one second faster since being resurfaced about four years ago.

Some of these times were done on slick tyres, some on radials and in various years etc but you can’t throw away history just because we are always wwmoving forward.

Winton Relay NewsOctober 12-13 WE DEFINITELY HAVE 11 keen drivers for the 2019 event and will be able to field TWO teams again. Our team managers and key volunteers are also on board again. Clearly the fun social aspect of our 4-day weekend out weighs the rigours of looking after our drivers. We are yet to hear from AROCA on the format for 2019 – will it be 12 Hours again?

Team Healey is ready for the marathon effort but some regular teams of other marques feel that 12 hours is too long. We await information from the Alfa Club who are considering feedback after the 2018 Relay.VOLUNTEERS and HELPERS are always welcome - NEEDED - so put the date in your diary now.

Historic Myrniong SprintApril 14THIS LONG RUNNING event run by the Austin 7 Club does not score points toward our championships but has always been well supported by Healey members, in particular Steve Pike. Steve’s Healey 3000 has dominated his class, Production Sports Cars – 1960

over 1601cc, for many years and in April he won again and lowered his class record time from 28.8 seconds to a new low of 28.4 seconds. Mark Bird was second in his 100/4 at 29.6 seconds, Shane O’Brien third with a best run at 31.1 and Trent Bantow was fifth in class with 33 seconds dead. John Carruthers was the final AHOC member at Myrniong in his Chev/Hea-ley with a best sprint time of 36.1 seconds in a high octane class that included Cobra and Daytona replicas.Since 2012 Healeys have also competed in the hands of John Keogh (best 36.6), Eric Patterson (35.2), Hugh Purse (33.2) and non member Frank Hook (34.1). Steve Pike also drove Hugh Purse’s Lister Jaguar just built back in 2015.

A CLOSING THOUGHTThe edge is not the limit ... it is only the starting point.

Cheers Rod

The competitors...

The June meeting...ONE OF RUSSELL Baker’s Austin Healeys was on display at the June general meeting, this one with a Healey engine but also sporting fuel injection and a few other mods. On the night, the club speaker was arguably one of Austral-ia’s most experienced competitors in international Historic

motorsport, Laurie Bennett. He has competed in a long list of Historic events at most of the famous locations around the world particularly at Goodwood in the UK where he has competed five times. He has a number of cars including a Mclaren M1B sports car and two Elfin Formula Fords.

HUGH PURSE AND FRANK Hook (Frank is not an AHOC member) flew the flag for Austin Healeys at the 43rd Historic Winton event held in May. They circulated faultlessly in the faster field of 30 regularity cars but perhaps a little too fast.On the Sunday they both adjusted their nominated times but were still unable to match them.
