The Philippines has a long history of life and deathcombat. From ancient times to the modern day, thefighting arts of the Filipino archipelago have proventhemselves time and again to be efficient, effective andextremely deadly forms of fighting. There are countlesssystems of Filipino martial arts spread throughout the

thousands of islands in this region. Many arefamily arts and no “outsider” will likely

ever learn them. Fortunately, manyhave also been made available tothe rest of the world. From theKyusho perspective the studybegins with learning revivaland restorations, but thendevelops mobile armtargeting as its Martialfoundation. When youdissect an attack, besidesa kicking action, all otherattacks start with the arms, but the challenge is that thearms are the fastest movingparts of the body with thegreatest range of motion anddirectional attack capability.

So it is a very challengingsection of training that should be

integrated into every session, in somany variations. There are other

ways to make this level a bit easier andone is in the skill of Arm Trapping. Kali

hidoshi Jordan publishes every day hisdeepest thoughts on his Facebook pageand he has the courtesy of sending themto me. They are always the result ofprofound reflections on the most varied

issues and, following the ancient epistolary custom ofthe classics, and in spite of the fact that we meetcontinuously, I send him, by way of a comment, myviews inspired by his profound questionings. Some ofthem will form a part of these editorials, because evenout of context, they result pertinent in certain way;they are, so to speak, almost a species of modernHaiku.

My pen, more and more lazy, is shortened inexplanations, because he who can understand, understands with little, and he who does not want tounderstand will not understand, however much Iextend my explanations; so it is thanks to yourstimulus, my dear Shidoshi, that these texts will seethe light. For those who want to read ShidoshiJordan's original texts, remember that they appearpublished free every day on his Facebook's page..

To what extent can we control the nature of peopleor things?

The river can be channeled, yes, and with great effort!but sooner or later the water will get into the sea. Anyartifice generates risks, because when the watercontained in a reservoir is suddenly released, it generatesa destructive wave … (or electricity in a turbine!).

Nature nonetheless, always prevails and all we can isdefer it, modulate it. Any attempt of absolute control, sooner or later generates an absolute lack of control.

"You cannot stem the tide", reads the saying, and so,the great forces of life, evolution and fate, always sneakthrough each and every gate we can establish.

Sobriety is neither an antidote, nor an impregnablebastion, but it's an equalizer of disasters. Likewise, reflection will not prevent us from swallowing each andevery bitter pill, but it will allow us to learn from themand maybe, if only at times, will let us break thedestructive cycle of the snake biting its own tail, of thebroken record repeating again and again the samemistake ... But evolution is also passing peacefully tothe following one, without fear, and yes, with illusion, because however much illusion is a deception, it's "ourdeception", and therefore the indispensable instrumentwith which our nature endowed us to move forward;the carrot is so necessary as the stick for the donkeyto walk.

ConsciousnessConsciousness is the privilege of the spirit and

therefore no one can silence it forever, because we cannotescape from ourselves.

The elevation that it promotes is eternal, because it'sin its nature to partake of the evolving push, and becauseof that, it must not be forced, but only remove the barriersthat surround it and contain it, let it come. Raised theramparts, as the water, it will flood everything in our day today, and though there might be background clatter, itssilence will impregnate us, with the same naturalness withwhich water wets everything it touches. But even soakedin it, we can walk naked as the king of the story with hisinvisible dress. How many times the child that we haveinside is the one who shouts: "the king is naked!" Thebrainy intellectuals do not reach the depth of that cry, themind does not reach where the spirit reaches, only thechild's innocence opens those sacred doors. How muchmystery and power enclosed in them!

Where is the limit of responsability with oneself andwith others?

The Master has no choice but to intervene. When?Every system; every nature; every context, whether

anthropological, historical or social, create its premises. If we take freedom as a great premise, everything will

be reduced to a reflex action of our natures (that of theMaster, of the student, in their contexts) any excuse isjustified or justifiable, because everything is, if looked atfrom the appropriate angle or framework.

From the Unamuno's "Let others invent!", to theresponsibility of a father, all is perfectly understandable, allis acceptable in the doing of a Master... everything! but, will it be really positive for both?

Life itself puts us every day in front of our limitations. To what extent must be pushed the river that flows alone?

Everything is a matter of degree. There are teacherswho decide to do, others to make do, and still others whotake advantage of the appropriate circumstances so thatevents occur, that evolution acts, that the major destiny ofeach student can find its place.

Everyone here, as usual, will act according to his orher nature, the mixture of both will pay off, with itsmistakes and agreements. What would be consideredwrong?

From a certain point of view there are some points tothink about: what instead of opening prospects, closesthem; what instead of modeling, amputates; what insteadof pruning ends in cut; what only removes the excess andforgets about supplying what is missing; what treats withexcessive rigor what should be treated with compassionand what, on the contrary, (beyond the Master's nature orconvenience) treats with disdain the unforgivable, andthat, like most things, is a Variable border.

We return to the natures, we return to the particular,we return to the context.

You cannot tame a thoroughbred like a Percheron, or aPercheron like a thoroughbred. Is the taming you learntthe right one for that horse?

S

"Each bull has his own fight", but, is it necessary to fight every bull whatcomes out from the bullpens door?

Sometimes not to do is much more than to do. And sometimes you'll justask yourself: But ... What the heck!

Above all particular, larger values act, greater forces are imposed, we are alla tiny part of other titanic ones, we can only find the way in the narrow hallwayof our destinies, one millimeter to the left ... two to the right ... assume our owndestiny with delight.

If playing cards and losing is a pleasure, what will it be to win? …- Well, my friend... That's talking to God! -

“Consciousness is the privilege ofthe spirit and therefore no one can

silence it forever, because we cannot escape

from ourselves.”

Hiroo Mochizuki, descendant from a lineage ofsamurais and founder of the Yoseikan Budo, willshortly celebrate his eighty birthdays. In hismodest dojo Salon de Provence, he is trainingwith one of his sons, under the intrigued look ofhis grandson. His small size has not preventedhim from becoming a great Master. Hisrobust body and safe body gestures givehim a vigorous aspect. Nothing in hisface or of his body let you guess hisage except for maybe his abundantwhite hair. Smiling, the sensei ofnaughty look always receives hisvisitors with a great simplicity. Heseeks his words and uses acolorful language to tell us withcharm and humor the years ofpractice that led him to foundthe Yoseikan Budo in 1975.At his age, "he trains twice aweek, gives three courses ofone hour and half and conductsseminars almost everyweekend", explains to usStephanie Mochizuki, head of theYoseikan Budo NationalCommission. Violaine, the Fitnessteacher, is stunned by the Master'sstate of health: "Normally - shesays - we have a lot of sequelswhen we have trained so much, this is not human, there hasgot to be a secret!"

An innovative master

It was somewhat by chance that Hiroo Mochizuki discovered"the cowboy whip movement", the fundamental wave-like motionof the Yoseikan Budo. "It's a stroke of luck because the oldmasters of China and Japan did not have this opportunity." Morethan a simple combination of Martial Arts, the Master has alwayswanted to develop a "body language", a complete discipline thatuses waviness as a conducting wire. Through the development ofthis system, he aspires to "pursuit a practice which is respectfulwith the body, taking into account the anatomy, physiology andbiomechanics", contrary to the "traditionalists systems that areharmful to health. We must absolutely change this way of thinkingto stop getting hurt and hurting others. The human being is madeto progress, mankind must learn the agreement and live it together. But there is still much work to do." Sabrina, a lady practitioner of35 years of age, states that "It is an art accessible to everyone, combining the physical aspect of Karate with the flexibility ofAikido".

Page 14: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016
Page 15: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

“I have no secret”

He owes his great physical shape to "achance in life". He simply recommends "not todo too much, but it's not we who decide, it isnature. It's my wife who is careful, not me!”Everyone describes the founder as anaffordable person, showing great modesty anda profound humanism. "People arecontinuously expecting to hear the stories ofthe Master that always carry a moral tingedwith humor" - Stephanie says -. "He prefersthe cozy clubs where everyone can have adrink and enjoy together after the class." Thisis confirmed by Jean-Pierre, professor ofYoseikan in Ventabren: "He is veryapproachable, always willing to train andshare his time. Meanwhile,

Sabrina for her part considers herself afollower of the sensei, with whom she had theopportunity of practicing for a year: "He taughtme how to control myself and my emotions, but especially that everything is possible whenthe means are given."

So, Hiroo Mochizuki is primarily a simpleand generous man, worthy of the title ofYoseikan Budo Soke [Guardian of theYoseikan Budo], that was transmitted to himby his father.

"Respect is the foundation of society of thefuture" - concludes the Master -. "Without itthere will be no peace."

Yoseikan Budo, “a research laboratory”

Hiroo Mochizuki has been practicing MartialArts since childhood with his father, MinoruMochizuki, grandson of the last descendant of aSamurai lineage. Minoru was a direct student ofmany great masters who founded importantfighting arts, like Kano Jigoro (Judo), UeshibaMorihei (Aikido) and Funakoshi Gichin (ShotokanKarate [rigid style]). In the 60s, his son Hiroo leftJapan under his request and settled in France, where he taught Aikido and Wado Ryu Karate[flexible style]. During this time he contributedsignificantly to the spreading of this Martial Art inEurope, since he participated in the creation ofthe French Federation of Karate in 1964.

It was then that he discovered French Boxing, anew influence that he incorporated in his practiceof Yoseikan Budo. "My father has always spokenabout Yoseikan as a research laboratory,"confesses his eldest son. This fusion of differentdisciplines in one and the flexibil ity of itstechniques makes a rich and modern Martial Art,al lowing each practit ioner evolve amongprojections, immobilizations on the ground, jointextensions, weapons etc., always respecting hisbody and that of his training partner.

Did you know?

The birthplace of the first Yoseikan Budo dojowas in Shizuoka, Japan, one and a half hoursfrom Tokyo, in the city of origin of the Mochizuki

family. The first Yoseikan dojo was founded in theearly twentieth century on the initiative of MinoruMochizuki. He wanted to share techniques fromdifferent disciplines and decided to regroup allthese teachings in one same place, his home.

Fifth Japan's largest city, Shizuoka is famousfor the magnificent panorama offered by MountFuji, sacred volcano of Shinto and Buddhistmythology, where legendary masters and samuraitrained on its flanks for centuries. Nowadays, practitioners from around the world keep comingto train in this environment, propitious for themeditation and the physical exercise.

A difficult recognition

The Yoseikan has one hundred and fifty clubs inFrance and despite being present in all fivecontinents it has difficulty in being recognizedbeyond its borders. "Many clubs are not affiliatedwith the Yoseikan World Federation and that'swhy few countries are represented during the

championships" - says Stephanie -. "To havemore weight and recognition at an internationallevel it's necessary that the world federationenters the SportAccord (CIO). For this, thefederation must have at least thirty countriesaffiliated, and this is difficult, particularly in Africa, because of the many things that are continuouslyhappening" - explains the head of the NationalCommission of Yoseikan Budo

So, right now, participating in the Olympics issimply impossible. "In the Olympics is evenmore complicated to have internationalrecognition, since decisions are subject topolitical whims". Mitchi, the master's eldestson, doesn't care: "I am in no hurry that ourYoseikan turns into a sports system tocompete in the Olympics, I prefer that itremains being a Martial Art, thus providing morehumanity."

An assured continuity

The two sons of Master Mochizuki havealso chosen to make the Yoseikan Budotheir passion and their profession. ForKyoshi, the youngest of the family, thisheritage is "a great fortune, a treasure, afamily wealth, but is also aresponsibility because we must go ondeveloping the discipline. It's one ofthe principles we have inherited

from our grandfather. He alwaysquestioned the teachings hereceived in order to improve them".For Mitchi ("the one who opens theway"), it is time to end the ancienttraditions. "Our father alwaystaught us to share ourknowledge. We will be onlyguarantors of a philosophicalline, but the succession ofYoseikan shall be madethrough a group ofinternational experts. «A manalone does not possess thewhole truth, we all have our virtuesand our weaknesses and onlysharing the richness of every onewe will be able to enrich thewhole world." A loyal vision ofthat of their father and whichthey wish to universalize in the44 countries affiliated with theYoseikan World Federation.

What happens when two people practice Chi-Sao,what is the meaning of their practice and what theobjectives? In this 3rd DVD, "Chi Sao from the base toan advanced level," Sifu Salvador Sánchez addressesperhaps the most important aspect of Wing Chun: Chi-

Sao, the soul of the system itself, whichprovides the practitioner with some

special characteristics which arecompletely different from others,

and gives him great virtues. Thisrole deals with some aspectsquite basic in principle, but asyou delve into them, they'llbe surprising to you. It is avery clear featuretraditional Chinese culture;what it's very obvious atfirst glance, itnevertheless contains asecond or third reading, which will surely changeyour approach, practiceand understanding. We willdiscuss how to practice ChiSao through our working

drills and how to apply thosedrills, that ability in a sparring,

linking certain concepts, perhaps not so much tied to

traditional Kung Fu, such asbiomechanics, structures, knowledge of

physics, etc., in order to obtain betterresults in our practice.

ell after so many years ofproof on the mat, in medicaland scientific validation, thatargument is now dead… orshould I say KO’ed! Andreally what is not to believe,

you hit a nerve and it causes pain and physicaldysfunction… so you need to ask; can anyonereally not believe it anymore? But we still havesome “Traditionalists” that believe if theirteacher did not show them or they do not knowit, it is not real.

But now more than ever people are finallywaking up to see that if they do not knowKyusho they are missing a vital aspect of theirstudies, no matter what style.

Real KyushoFor Starters

So many people are usingKyusho; either integrating it intotheir current systems or using itas a separate system. We havebeen publicly instructing it nowfor over 30 years and still thereare still many latecomers, eitherjust hearing about Kyusho or whoare now feeling left out. But it isstill not too late! Why many waited or resisted

learning Kyusho? There aremany reasons, but the mostpopular are that the individualdoes not bel ieve in it, theindividual‘s instructor does notbelieve in it.

be the best way to start.”

Page 30: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

Over the years as people did awaken to Kyusho’s potential, manyquestions came in from around the world as to what would be the best wayto start. The answer is to get to an actual course, to experience it first-hand. But many people cannot break that barrier for personal reasons, sothe next best thing we suggest to start them in their journey and make itmore comfortable is an educational video.

But the presentation of Kyusho must be on their personal level for it tohelp them fully relate it to their current situation. So we work more for theirlevel of martial skill or knowledge (or lack of skill for beginners withoutmartial training), suggesting specific direction.

For the experienced Martial Artist:

If I know they have some experience in martial arts, the best suggestion isthe "Top Ten" (Points of Kyusho) video... this has good methods as well asselect easily accessible targets that are versatile enough for varioussituations and needs.

It also helps them with idea to in turn help demonstrate and possiblyinstruct others in for greater effect and efficiency.

This has become Budo Internationals best-selling Kyusho video, due tothe versatility and simplicity involved. The trailer alone has over 1.3 millionviews so far… this demonstrates a large curiosity for this concise method ofKyusho education. And that is exactly what Kyusho is, efficiency in aconcise package.

Kyusho International

Kyusho International

Page 33: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

From there the Martial Arts practitioner can then adapt these to their personal style and gain even more worth andgreater depth in that style. That will hopefully break the barrier and get them to seek hands on training or at least leadthem to anther course of study presented in video format… and hopefully not rushed. Taking the time to fullyunderstand, learn and adapt to the presented targets and uses, they can further that line of training or develop another

(Striking, Grappling, Joint Manipulations, etc.).And as a side note, those instructors that in turn brought the Kyusho to theirorganized groups gained favor and higher regard as they worked to help that group

and the people inside.

For the BeginningMartial Artist or tothose with no MartialTraining:

The suggestion is for the KSP(Kyusho Self Protection), and althoughit is primarily billed as Women’s SelfProtection, it is an easy and powerfulmethod that we use for all newtrainees. This is mostly in line with the"Top Ten" mentioned earlier as it hasfew strategic targets, but with a moredefined and simple method of delivery.

Now this information is not only forWomen, it is also optimal for teens,

children and especially forprofessional men that need a shortcourse of study (not a l i fetimeendeavor of Martial ART). And it hasfor them the added bonus of notusing fisted hands or kick (The shodfoot in many countries is considered aweapon and carries legalramifications). As example a Doctorhas worked all his life to build a goodincome and therefore becomes agreat target. They do not have thetime for Martial Studies, but need self-protection. But the problem is if theyuse a fist or foot, they may be heldlegally liable for any damages by thecourt system.

So the film is dedicated to openhand formation (that wil l not beviewed by onlookers as aggressive, itwill be viewed more as protective) ,vital targets that will work best withthe openhand and correctapplications, first in tutorial format butalso in a more stressful streetscenario.

Now it was stated when the filmreleased, but the Women used in thefilming was a professional model thathad never worked (or knew of) Kyushobefore. She did not even want tostrike the attackers as she neverstruck people prior to that film. Andas we begin the film training you can

Evan Pantazi

“Top ten video: The trailer alone has over 1.3 million views so far… this demonstrates a large curiosity for this concise

see her beginner actions…but she did drop all of the Ukesin that film well and repetitively throughout the day… evenin street clothes in parking lot scenarios. Sheaccomplished several KO’s via nerve targets that were realaffects and not staged for the film (we do not fake oraffects, Kyusho is about realistic delivery and affect).

For All:

Now the Kyusho Knockout is what lures everyoneto the knowledge and is precisely why Kyusho gotpopular. But it is not all there is to Kyusho, norshould it be as it is precisely that practicewhich will cause those that still make it themain thrust of their study loose students, friends or fellow training partners. As amatter of fact, anyone can KOanother (Kyusho does

make it far easier), they can break a limb, gouge the eyes, etc., however only a master can incapacitate the actions ofanother without damage (again Kyusho’s forte).

Kyusho is easy, what is more challenging is reaching anindividual at their personal level, wants and needs... that isthe pinnacle of learning and educating others, as when

you can reach this with each person on theirlevel, you will have given them

what they need; no more, noless.

We are ready to tailor aprogram specifically for

you as well, justcontact us atwww.

Page 39: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

1) Why Movements are no forms

"You discover what if you leave out what is not.“

Again and again one is faced with discussions on the meaningof forms. For the WTU I have chosen the name Movement fortools for practice (solo and with partner / s) for two reasons.

The first reason is my homage to one of the men who did thegroundwork on which we build: G. I. Gurdjieff. He also referredto his "dances" to specially composed piano music as„Movements".

Page 43: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

WT Universe

Page 44: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

The second reason is that which is already in the WTU basicmotto "we move people". Movement - nothing is static. Life ismovement. The force that is enlivened us the force that kills us,because man is always rigid and stiff, trying to set up a barri-er to life. But it breaks on him.As the waves of water it strikes the protective armor overagain and interrupts him. Movement is life - Stagnation isdeath. In our solo and partner Movements we describe situations. There are no positions and there are no processes. Assumingzoom with the wrong attitude to them - what can be immedi-ately seen from the outside - then you can save the practice. Then one is to wrap the best way again in an artificial, ankonditionierte, alien form without any value.

2 2) Human states - "The bungee effect of humanconsciousness“

If one pays attention to the development / development ofhuman consciousness, is a "defense mechanism" particularlyevident. Despite all the "heroic" efforts this prevents anychange.People want change, they dream of movement, freedom, whatever they mean by. Most them comes this desire, if theyhave their everyday state with which they have so far fullyidentified tired because it does not provide any new stimulimore.

Page 48: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

For this reason, we must point out two basic drives for changeagain:1) The search for a new source of attention. It is sufficientthen that "garments" are exchanged and then go through thepeople the same pattern in a new form again and hold forchange and what they are experiencing it for experience.2) The Feel of inner necessity to change somethingfundamental, the inner pressure for fulfillment and developmentbeyond the satisfaction of attention and by "soul growth".People are starting to want to change something in whichactivity, that may always show. You begin figurativelyloszurennen from the starting point. They seem to move, toremove. But one thing they have not taken into account, theyare still connected to their initial state. I call it a rubber rope. This provides at the beginning as resistance. The faster andfurther away from the starting point, the tighter it is, andbegins to build return. At some point, the man running againstthis rubber rope. It's just a matter of time until his strength, his enthusiasm subside and it is pulled back to its originalinitial state. Reicher to the "experience" of a failed escape.

3 Movement Article 7, 19th of February 2012 AJN/RFB

"We can be given almost everything, everythingbut freedom!" John G. Bennett Our under-

standing of "movement" is the following: . 1) A community of people, the move-

ment of the WTU. . 2) A physical, emotional or men-

tal process. . 3) A sort of exercise in the WTU:

• Motional-Movements • Solo- und Partner-Movements • Fight • Drill • Health • Guild

• „Movements“ for the„Center of thought“

• „Movements“ for the„Center of emotion“Furthermore the term is knownfor G. I. Gurdjieff's Movement-Exercises and Dances.Gurdjieff also called his"school" an "Institute for the HarmonousDevelopment of Man".Following that, we see theWTU as a Movement, com-mitted to harmonic devel-

opment in humans. Wing Tsun, as we knowit, can only be used inconnection with that,

Page 52: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

as a tool to achieve it. This was also one of the reasons, forwhich we kept up the old term "Wing Tsun", as it means"beautiful spring" or "ode to spring". A notation also bearingthe symbolism of resurrection, revival, a renewed sproutingafter the winter, a new phase, an adapted form. So what isthe harmonic development of humans after all? When talkingabout or explaining some- thing we usually do so by creatingimages, trying to converge with the matter itself fromdifferent angles. One time from this direction one time fromthat. Thus we get various points of view, and shape a coherentoverall picture, visible from as many different perspectives aspossible. By "Movement" we do not mean just a gathering ofpeople, conditioning themselves and each other to having thesame inventory the same limited toolkit, and by that perceivingeach other as being similar, sympathetic, and so forth. A Movement really is a collective. It is a community of peoplededicating themselves to the unfolding of their skills, potentials, using the time and place's appropriate tools.

Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak is a very brutal and devastatingArt. The Arts concept its to dominate and take overbattleground and space, fast dominating space and engulfing

opponents to prevent them from being able to usetheir weapons or body. Once space is acquired,

the base and angle are taken to controlopponents rotation or projection, rooting

or uprooting is produced from thesmallest expression of touch orangle and base position, this wecall “Lengket” or sticky.

Keeping very close toopponents when striking orusing a weapon and puttingopponents on “Slywa” orweightless stage of spinaland muscle misalignment.Once rooting takes place, the strike makes massivecontact in the body that hasno muscle or skeletalprotection. “Sambuts” arefinishes meaning somethingvery hard to walk away from

especially when compression ofneck or spine, so finishing means

its a done deal. The opposite ofthat is a “Buang” that stands for

throws less devastating in the beginnerlevels but taught to learn mechanics that

in later phases of development of thestudent or practioner can be modified to

“Sambuts” for devastating throws. Compressingskeletal structure, weapons and body structures or striking, grapping defense and offence are all played and studied in ourplatforms. In this video there's a beginner “Pantjar” platform, also the “Jurus”, which are the playbooks of the system ofPukulan Pencak Silat Serak, are played here. This platformteaches where to be in position to attacker, the platform is 3dimensional and teaches where opponents body's alignmentsare the weakest to point of contact the platform. It also teacheshow to deal with multiple opponents and space needed, baseangle and levers are all play here. Hope you enjoy my smalloffering into a vast large Art. “Hormat Terima Kasi”.

From Teacher to Student

At a time when the internet, phonesand the like didn’t exist yet, I wouldimagine, the student-teacherrelationship must have been much morecommon than today. The reason isobvious: One acquired knowledge mostof al l by means of other, moreexperienced people. One often paid a lotof respect to the experienced personand/or one followed the teacher andmentor, even on travels through thecountry for decades in order to betaught. Modern technology provides us with

many new ways to learn from someoneand to spread knowledge. However, despite these numerous possibilitiesthere are areas, in which one onlymakes progress, just like in the past,by means of the direct relationshipbetween the teacher and the student. It is mostly about movement-related

disciplines such as for example dancing.Or of course also the tradit ionalmartial arts such as the original HungGar Kung Fu of my school. It is in the nature of things that

especially older people or people withentirely different interests are betterat something than oneself.

Page 68: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

Kung Fu

“The student pays respect, honours histeacher and his school, helps him where

he or she can and supports him. In return, the teacher has a responsibleposition, in which he is responsible for the

success or failure of his students.”

Page 69: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

he abil ity to accept this and tosubmit oneself to someone is aprerequisite to learn from atraditional teacher or more befittinglyhere: from a master. This is probablyan important part of my recipe of

success with my teacher, the Kung Fu legend,Dr. Chiu Chi Ling. In our latitudes, the words“mentor” or “master” have a negativeconnotation, as, like I said, it is no longercommon in many areas. And yet they areindispensable, as mentioned in the introduction, for the learning and the passing on of traditionalKung Fu. Such a relationship is by no means aone-way street. The student pays respect, honours his

teacher and his school, helps him where he orshe can and supports him. In return, the teacherhas a responsible position, in which he isresponsible for the success or failure of hisstudents. Upon entering the school and at thestart of the first lesson this connection, albeitnot particularly strong yet, is already there. Thisstep is known as “first Bai-Si”, which means “toask the teacher for it”. In my school this is thehanding over of the white belt after the passedtest. After many years of instruction and loyalfollowing a second Bai-Si can be taken. Herewe are mostly talking about 10 to 15 years afterthe first lesson. At this festive ceremony thebond between student and teacher is confirmedand strengthened respectively. Hereby thestudent vows to have definitely decided for themaster and to pledge loyalty and support tohim. The teacher, in turn, publicly makes acommitment to his student and promises him orher to impart deeper knowledge into the martialarts to him or her. These were the so-called “indoor” or “back door” students who used to bemostly taught right at the teacher’s house.Becoming such a student or even style

T

successor like me of course requires more than mere training andsweating. Again and again I observe how students, not only myown, give everything they possibly can and perform excellently inorder to gain deeper knowledge into a martial art and to build upa strong Kung Fu family of own’s one. Yet, the art lies in doing so, not only a few weeks, months or

years, but all the time. Similar to other types of relationships weknow, such as for example marriage or good friendship, this kindof connection lives off love and energy, which are exchanged overa long time. The most suitable comparison would be the one of a family, such

as for example between a father and a son. This is an enormouslystrong bond that can withstand a lot. Especially from the perspective ofthe student, it is not always pleasant to learn something from hismaster. Just as it is not pleasant for the son to be rebuked by his father. However, this is precisely how not only the character of the student isshaped but also how his or her devotion and loyalty is tested, again andagain. And especially for me personally this is a very importantpoint. Of course one is allowed to be interested in other martialarts or to take a look at what this or that school doesdifferently. However, at the second Bai-Si, at the latest, the decision should be taken and the loyaltyshould be irrevocable. I like to handle it likemy own teacher: “Loyalty before all else”.For my part, you may be slow, weak orinflexible. These are all things one canwork on and improve together. Aslong as the loyalty is there.

Kung Fu

“Yet, the artlies in doing

so, not only afew weeks, months oryears, butall thetime.”

“Becoming such astudent or even

style successor likeme of course

requires more thanmere training and

sweating.”

Page 72: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

However, one must not misunderstand me, as I said: I very muchwelcome an interest in other styles, schools and the comparisonwith them. I also promote and encourage my students to think forthemselves on a daily basis. The basis of this relationship, however, is and will always be loyalty towards one’s teacherand his school. Usually, obligations also imply rights for theperson concerned. And of course, this is also the case here. Imentioned the example of father and son, the example of afamily. Does a loving father grow tired of helping his sonwhen he is confronted with a difficult task? Certainly not. Agood traditional teacher (Chinese “Sifu”) is always going tosee his students as some sort of children. And likewise, inreturn for his or her loyalty, the student may of course alwayscount on the support of his or her Kung Fu family and on theadvice of his or her master. Who of us has ever been in a hecticphase in life or needed a few hands more in order to master achallenging situation? For the student, loyalty towards his orher master and his or her school involves a family that nevergrows tired of supporting and helping him or her. Of coursethis relationship changes in the course of theeducation, like for example at the completion ofthe basic school (black belt). From that pointonwards, one ranks among “adults” in theKung Fu community, and at that point atthe latest, one also starts takingresponsibility “downwards” for his orher younger Kung Fu brothers andsisters. Or when a student isappointed to “Sifu” (master, teacher), which symbolicallycorresponds to founding a familyof one’s own. But the core of thematter always remains the same:One is part of a big, strong family, which is there for you and helpsto follow the way with discipline, respect, control, courage andattention, in order to become abetter, more virtuous humanbeing.

of each individual structure until I fullyunderstood it and it became a part of me.Pak Vic was a very strict and disciplinedteacher in those days and demanded fulltime training and dedication, because the

training was very hard and punishing.

Grand Masters

Page 84: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

remember even the difference in the level changeswithin each of the jurus and lankas had itschallenges, keys of understanding. Serak is so vastwith an extensive curriculum especially withweapons. Pak Vic is very particular in how a weaponis used in both offensive and defensive manner and

the structures and principles that create a signature for ourline of Pukulan Pencak Silat Serak. Pukulan pentjak SilatSerak is both an empty hand and weapon base system. We have many edge weapons, swords, knifes, circularkarambits, sticks, different length staffs, and other moreobscure weapons.

The main thing I want to cover in this article is theparticular way in how we train and use our weaponry. Eventhe empty hand training deals with the opponent attackingwith weapons in both hands and multiple opponents. This

training makes you more aware of everything that takesplace in an altercation and do’s and don’ts when

facing weapon attacks with single or multipleattackers.

The weapons jurus and hand jurushave a lot to teach in its principal

applications, even includingdifferent grips for different

weapons. The lankas arewhat makes the weapons

come alive. Particular

lankas will teach different ways of dealing with differentcircumstances. The jurus are basically the alphabet of thesystem. These letters are in a sense used to create thewords in the sentences of a combative conversation. Thesambuts are applications and used to produce and traindifferent scenarios and drills to learn, feel, or rasiah. Thesambuts or sambutans counter for counter to train withpartners to start building flow and smoothness for actionand reaction to attacks.

In Serak even the defense of the system is alwaysattacking. So when defending with the upper body thelower body is attacking. And when defending with thelower body the upper body is attacking so something isalways attacking regardless of an offensive or defensivestructure. Part of the body isalways attacking the spacemaking way for the entriesor to f inish. Thecontact is made at30, 45 and 90degrees for bothoffensive anddefense and usesthe concept ofthe base, angle, and lever. Thebase, angle,

and lever is one of Pukulan Pencak Silat Seraks’ signatures for manipulating theopponent’s space, balance, and structure utilizing efficiency with little to no power.

There are many important elements in Serak. For instance sensitivity of the body andcontact with the opponent is a must. So we will move into a very close range to engulfand control the space. Longar are long angles used to track the returning blade of anykind of cut so the body can occupy the space. This is also utilized in long range entries.

The buangs or throws are used to manipulate the opponent’s weight and skeletonstructure moving your way in through the opponents’ body to displace their mass gettingit out of the way to get to the next opponent. This can also be utilized with the concept ofshielding or bridging using one opponent to block and hide behind or seamlessly transferfrom one opponent to the next as they get into each other’s way. The sambuts are morefor finishing the opponent through throws, locks, and breaks.

There are jurus or upper body structures are both done forempty hand and weapons. For empty hand there are 18jurus that teach both offensive and defensivestructures along with 18 war jurus. These Jurusalso correspond to the weapon jurus for knife, staff, and sticks. All the jurus connect so theblade jurus will also teach concepts forthe empty hand and stick jurus. Eachjuru supports the other jurus, so thehand jurus support the weaponjurus and the weapon jurussupport the hand jurus.

So once you learn the fullcurriculum all the piecescome together to complete

the rotation of the hip to pull or push away and creates maximumtorque form whichever sambut or weapon structure used. Eachindividual weapon has a particular flavor and manner in how it isused, for example: the clurit or cycle weapon there's a principal callTarik or to pull using Lanka Tiga that makes this weapon veryspecial to us. This creates maximum torque to pull or cut while

doing a sambut or finish with the knife or Pissau edge. These anglesare used to provide an offensive base to finish. Sembilan are the 9

cutting angles of the weapon. The striking angles and various weapongrips are related to the Jurusan motion of each juru

weather standard forward grip or reverse grip. Theblade is also turned at an angel to make disarming

and stripping very difficult. The blade up angle is moreof a coil angle used to produce hard to block fast

cuts and disarms. It is very hard to strip aman holding the blade in this manner.

There are also concepts for attackingthe opponents’ returning blade or the

shifting of angles. Disarming theopponent usually takes place after

the cuts have been done and weare on our way out to the next

opponent. Once entry isacquired the blade neverstops cutting and creatingangles of entry.

The buntuk also known aspunio or back end of theweapon is produced forclose range fighting. This isoften used for close rangehitt ing, short strikes, grappling, stripping, andchoking. With thekarambits knives, the ringis also the butu and is usedto turn the blade angle. Theplatforms are another veryimportant part of PukulanPencak Silat Serak.

The first platformstructure is Latihanpelosok Tiga whichintroduces and teaches allthe basics of heel to toewalking the l ine. From

there several pentjar platform structures are introduced.Teaching proper movement, body positioning, the useof body angles to not take on the opponents mass orload, how to keep balance, sliwa or concepts of takingopponents balance and not compromising yours, jurus, sweeps, and weapons. The lower base is used todissolve incoming power and mass and to stoprotational power from the opponent. The foot rotation isused to cut the line of incoming mass and helps inproducing the forward pressure, occupying the space, and leaves you in a position of power and balancecalled masukans. Forward and reverse masukans isconstantly used to shift and change while moving in theplatform to bring in the opponent as a shield, makecuts, uprooting the opponent and for jurus, buangs, and sambuts.

Other platform structures like lanka lima is used a lotfor hand structures. This is an attacking platform and

used to dominate any angle coming in. So there aremany drills for timing, transition of movement andangle of acceptance for the strike and dissolve theenergy coming in. This automatically produces thespace and angle for the weapon to make its entryand finish. Lanka tiga is used more of an evasiveplatform to come into an opponent from anoutside line or inside line from an angle so youdon’t meet their mass head-on. UNION ITALIAN TRADITIONAL KUNG FU

MISSION

THE VISIO A NEW U

Practicing traditional Kung Fu meansimmersing yourself in an ancient cultureand therefore setting off on a trip throughthe study of philosophy, medicine, art andmartial spirit.

The fields of study and research areendless, as are the manifestations of thepractice.

To date, the UIKT brings together anumber of schools and teachers whopractice and teach different styles.

The beauty of this union lies in sharingthe multiple forms to live the martialexperience, and everyone benefits fromthe exchange and dialogue among thedifferent traditions and methods.

In the past, the great Masters met togrow together, train and show the resultsof their own investigations: virtuous circleof exchange and mutual support thatallowed the Masters who joined thiscollaboration to excel in the practice anddissemination of traditional Kung Fu.

The UIKT is rebuilding this spirit ofharmony and cooperation to launch anew era of traditional Kung Fu.

For it, it is necessary TO JOIN forces toallow that the real martial culture can goout of a scene increasingly decadent thathas created an upset image of Kung Fu'snature.

In only the first three years of activity, the UIKT has alreadyachieved a great recognition with a membership of about 300schools. An enormous potential, thanks to which emerged theidea of the new project directed to coordinating the forces andcreating a synergy among the different areas of work that havebeen identified in the last years. The six areas - Tradition, Evolution, Culture, Events,Competition and Training - will enable the UIKT to makepossible the blooming of an incredible potential that onlyexpects to be activated.

UIKT 2016THE NEW PROJECT

Page 103: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

Subdivided into different style projects, the traditional area willundertake all the action directly related to the promotion of the classicalstyles of Chinese Kung Fu and the different fields of study, such as QiGong and Qin Na. In the last two years, we have already launchedseveral style projects: Ba Gua Zhang, Hung Gar, Shaolin, Tai Chi andWing Chun. Different schools belonging to the same method, and inmany cases linked to different traditions and families, are comparingtheir own studies and the obtained results; an exciting adventure that isgiving new incentives to UIKT and all the Masters.

The cultural area will be responsible for all aspects related to thedissemination of Chinese classical culture. In addition to training courses, it will be the reference area fororganizing study tours in Asia and for historical research in the martialfield.A team of linguists will collaborate with UIKT to provide translation andinterpretation services in Italy and China. In the 2015-2016 season, some test events have been organized inorder to experience new UIKT training proposals in the cultural field:language and Chinese calligraphy, seminars on Yi Jing, etc. On the wakeof the success already gotten, from 2016 new courses of Chineseculture will begin in collaboration with the University of Shanghai andteachers from all over the world.

Teaching and practicing Martial Arts also require a series of skills whichare related to the sports and labor modern world. Through the trainingarea, the UIKT will offer the opportunity of specialized updating in thefields of medicine, sports and health, as well as in the fiscal and legalarea.Communication is another key aspect for the dissemination andteaching of Kung Fu; acquiring the tools to promote their own activitieswill provide a new potential of visibility and efficiency to the affiliatedschools in their advertising investments.

Folklore and tradition lend to the accomplishment of media eventsof great resonance, which in these years have left space to theMartial Arts even in unexpected areas. The showiness of Kung Fuand the attraction of the oriental philosophy will be included in thearea of events, which will continue organizing fairs, festivals andspectacles

In the period immediately after the Cultural Revolution in China, traditional Kung Fu was inserted in a sporting context that todayinvolves millions of people in the whole world. As long as it's notunderstood as the only goal and motive to practice, the sportingaspect of Martial Arts can be a good stimulus for training and for theconstructive interaction with other practitioners and methods. The area of competit ion wil l be in charge of arrangingchampionships of forms and combat, as well as preparing the wholeteam necessary for the correct development of the tournaments; alsothe training of judges, referees and support staff for competitions.

Some of the greatest Masters of the past spent their livesresearching in the field of the already existing styles to create newmethods more consistent with the historical context of the moment. The immortality of the practice is closely linked to the ability of thepractitioners to contextualize the classic principles also in the modernera. And so, the UIKT, through the area of evolution, will give space toall those Masters who are conducting researches aimed to codifyingnew styles and self-defense systems. At the same time a group ofdoctors, physical therapists and psychologists will focus onresearching and giving a modern interpretation to traditionalpractices.

The S.I.D.P. is anassociation of people who gottogether to pursue a commongoal: that of spreading aconception of the martialspirit as the new of a newculture, the center of whichis Man, in the sense that heis able of thinking criticallyand acting with resolution, that is, he masters himself;in the sense that he isendowed with martial ability, that is, he is a fighter; in thesense that he is ready tosupport his teammates andhelp them become stronger, that is, he is a friend in thehighest sense. We are, and we want to be

ur conception of themartial spirit might not beoriginal. However, in aworld in which MartialArts are often associatedwith entertainment, and

are reduced to the practice in a traininghall, to folklore, and in any caseconsidered a superfluous, unnecessaryand outdated knowledge, even withinthe field of actual combat that shouldbe their domain, such a view isundoubtedly very little shared. But wedo not believe that it is impracticable orunfruitful. Our conception of the martial spirit isthe necessary condition for a newhumanism, which allows people to faceimmediate threats, and thus survive; ahumanism that helps them recognizeand challenge the standards and

successful and to gain prestige, accepting the challenge of society toconquer it by following its rules. We are idealistic people and we donot resign ourselves to being squashedby the strongest: we work to bestronger; we do not want to be notpreys or predators, but to neutralizepredators, provoking in those who areready to abuse another person, thedoubt that their prey maybe is not asdisarmed as they think. But the principalgoal of our work is that of havingenough strength to help: ourselves, ourcompanion, our loved ones, ourneighbor… as many as we can!The angular stone of ourphilosophical thought can becompared, if not circumscribe, to acertain reading of the principle of theTao, and this unifying idea illuminates

Weng Chun meets Choy Lee Fut

For over thirty years I have traveled to Hong Kong and China to learn andresearch Southern Shaolin Kung Fu, and in particular Weng Chun Kung Fu, notleast in order to share this art with my (master-) students as thoroughly andcomprehensively as possible. In this endeavor, I have been greatly inspired by myWeng Chun- Grandmaster Wai Yan, who launched this research project afterWorld War Two with his research academy and Weng Chun school Dai Duk Lun,and has finally passed it on to me. In this article I would like to give an accountof my research trip to Hong Kong in July 2015, during which I have not onlystudied Pao Fa Lien- Wing Chun but also took a closer look at Choy Lee Fut-KungFu. Weng Chun- Grandmaster Chu Chung Man, a close friend of my teacher WaiYan for over three decades, has introduced the Fa Kuen- forms into the Weng

hile researching a new style of Kung Fu, it is always important to me to actually learn it in orderto obtain better in-depth understanding of its particularities. After some inquiry, I chose

the experienced Choy Lee Fut- Master Tsang Hin Kuen in Shatin, Hong Kong, to start myinvestigation. Master Tsang Hin Kuen stems from a famous Choy Lee Fut- family; his fatherTsang Chiu Wu had written a book about the principal form Sap Ying Kuen and its applications, and his family and he himself participated in many contests and Sanda competitions. Still

today, Tsang Hin Kuen annually hosts a Sanda tournament together with the Hong Kong Fighting Union. Also, theway he used force within his movements very much corresponded to my own notion of Kung Fu.

Chun system. These forms have the same names as the Choy Lee Fut- forms, aswell as a similar structure regarding their execution. However, GrandmasterChu Chung Man never mentioned their origin from Choy Lee Fut, but insteadreferred to a distinct lineage from the Weng Chun- hall of the Shaolin temple tohimself.

W

His large Choy Lee Fut- school is integrated into a majorbusiness complex in Shatin. Training takes placesbarefooted on mats, which is kind of uncommon for HongKong, but indicates a certain focus on combat training.Master Tsang Hin Kuen welcomed me very warmly, andpromptly began to teach me the 15 basic exercises ofChoy Lee Fut. These are great drills for the development offlexibility, coordination and power, based on the basicsteps, punches and kicks of Choy Lee Fut. They are

always performed as warm-up at the beginning of trainingsessions, and with these drills I also learned the basicprinciples of Choy Lee Fut:

1.) Yin and Yang: According to Master Tsang Hin Kuen, this is a concept of relativeness. For instance, if Yangrefers to the sky, then the ground is what Yin means. IfYang denotes fire, then Yin corresponds with water etc. InChoy Lee Fut, there are two forms of “inserting” punches:

Page 139: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

Page 141: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

The Yin-punch and the Yang-punch. These two complement each other and canbecome a serial attacking and defending action. These famous chain punches ofChoy Lee Fut are also known as “serial inserting punches”. The founder of PakSing Choy Lee Fut was also known as “The unbeatable Tam Saam”, because hewon all of his over hundred contest fights, not least by virtue of this particularform of the Choy Lee Fut- chain punches.

2.) Rigorous and soft: In Choy Lee Fut, both qualities are sought to berealized. For example, the basic punches appear to be rigorous from outside, such as the Qua Choy (Hanging punch), Sou Choy (Sweeping punch), Pao Choy(Throwing punch), Bing Choy (Lash punch) etc. However, according to theprinciple of softness in Choy Lee Fut, the arm is to be used like a sling, wherethe palm or fist represents the stone, the arm the string, while the waist is

Kung Fu

Page 143: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

holding the string. By correct use of the waist andfootwork, the practitioner creates the soft internalpower.

3.) Emptiness and Concreteness: As anexample, you can distract an opponent by

combining a concrete punch with an emptypunch. Our dri l ls included manycombinations in the form of “left empty, rightconcrete”, or “low empty, high concrete”etc.

Most of the basic exercises werealready familiar to me from Weng Chun. But the particular use of the shoulder tostrive towards maximizing reach was anew concept to me and gave me freshimpulses. I also came to appreciate thatdistinctive feature of Choy Lee Fut, theleopard fist. In Choy Lee Fut, fighting over

long distance plays an important role, andin this respect I have learned many useful

combat strategies from Master Tsang HinKuen.

The next thing I have learned was one of theunarmed main forms. I quickly came to realize

that that the Weng Chun Fa Kuen apparentlystems from the same source; in Choy Lee Fut, thereare some identical form patterns taught as in the FaKuen, which certainly is no coincidence. By dealing

Page 145: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

with the Choy Lee Fut system, I have gained a more thorough understanding of manymovement patterns within the Fa Kuen, and I can appreciate the attempt ofGrandmaster Chu Chung Man to integrate the Fa Kuen into the Weng Chun system. Todo so, he had to partially change the body work, and it was necessary to shift theapplications more towards the usual Chi Sao-distance, which also meant a greateremphasize on the elbows as a source of power. This, unfortunately, also had the effectthat his form of the Fa Kuen has lost quite a bit of its original “momentum”, which wetry to reestablish in our Weng Chun association. We seek to leave the development ofelbow power mostly to the other Weng Chun forms, whereas one chief aspect of the FaKuen really is for the practitioner to shape up that particular “swinging power” ormomentum, and to learn how to use his arm like a sling.

When I came to learn the Choy Lee Fut long pole, Bagua Kwan, I was astonishedonce again about the striking similarities between the long pole method of Choy Lee

Kung Fu

Page 147: Martial Arts Magazine Budo International 311 May 1 fortnight 2016

Fut and that of Weng Chun-, but also of Wing Chun- and Hung Gar- Kung Fu.Similar body work, partially identical segments within the forms, as well as thesame combat principles such as Fan, Got etc., clearly suggest that all southernShaolin-styles originate from the same source, and merely took different routesof development during the last two centuries.

Chan Heung, the founder of Choy Lee Fut, had first learned Hung Gar fromhis uncle Chan Yuen Woon, then Lee Gar, before becoming the student of themonk Choy Fook. To pay respect to all of his teachers, he called his style Choy-Lee-Fat, where “Fat” (Buddha) points to the origin of Shaolin. As we know fromthe biographies of the great Kung Fu- masters, they firmly stuck to their path, constantly seeking to improve themselves and develop their martial art to a stillhigher level. I myself also stick to this path since I met Grandmaster Wai Yan forthe first time three decades ago and was allowed to learn from him. If you wantto be part of our Kung Fu movement as well, do not hesitate to contact us, andwe will support you in your endeavor to raise your martial art to a higher level.

"What beautifies the desert is that it hides a well of watersomewhere."

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

"What we know is a water drop;what we ignore is the ocean.”

Isaac Newton

Flow doesn't mean being sloppy; definitely, water is not so, forit doesn't leave any corner uncovered... it reaches everywhere! As asturian

people say, "water has a very fine snout". Unhurried, coupling tothe circumstances, water is a metaphor for the persistence andextreme adaptability. It's the paradigm of changing in the formwithout transforming the essence.

Water catalyzes life; without water, the land dries and gets barren;and the fire, without a controller, spreads everywhere and the air, tur-ned into a sandstorm, cannot carry the fertility of the clouds, or theforce of the changes. Even iron is wrought by the use of fire in the forges!

Water is the cradle of all life, the primary livelihood of both inanimateand animate beings, all of them "bags" of hotter and hotter waters, accor-ding to their degree of evolution, and adapted to a change that weaccompany, of which we are part, and not guilty, as somewould have us believe. The "terminal sin" is the Judeo-Christian guilt of environmentalism.

Water comforts us, cleanses us, and blesses us.Wet in the rivers of the moment, we swim, fight,wreck...

Flowing, adapting to the barriers, going down, not opposing anything, water is the perfectanalogy of humility, adaptation and not con-flict. The water wins aimlessly; following itsnature, it surrounds any obstacle and tea-ches us how to overcome, but with wisdom, free from wear and tear, without losing sightof the goal. What is a rock on the road, amountain…? Even trapped in betweencliffs and narrow passages, water filters,or evaporates if such a thing is not pos-sible; nothing stops its destination.

It's been the river of life that has leftin my shores these texts, which todayI share in book format. And I say "itleft" because all authorship is at leastconfusing, since we are all deb-tors of those before us, thosewho inspired and keep inspi-ring us, of the floating cloudsof the collective unconscious, and even, who knows!, of thespirits and the consciousnessaround us.

I can't teach anythingbecause I don't know any-thing, but for those who wishto hear my poems, here I leavemy sincere and truly feltthoughts, every time more felt andless thought, because mind is adeceptive device that sees what itwants to see and I’ve learned to besuspicious about it.

Comprehensive or Integral Vovinam is simply going back tothe Founder's true Vovinam. The goal of the founder wasclearly and openly declared: "Harvesting effectivetechniques, assimilate their essence and transform theminto Vovinam techniques", and indeed this concept still

remains in force and is mandatory for all VovinamMasters in the world. Vovinam is then a

research concept to achieve a supereffective style. However, today 90% ofVovinam teachers forget it and bendto a program too loaded, too fixed, too aesthetic and sometimescompletely ineffective innumerous techniques.Comprehensive Vovinam issimply rediscovering theoriginal essence of MasterNguyen Loc's art. For that,we have the principles, thebasic techniques, and wejust have to go back towork out the effective wayof every technique andapply the foundingprinciple. In this DVD, by thehand of Master PatrickLevet, we will study the basisof Integral Vovinam, threatsand knife attacks, integralcounterattacks, and defenseagainst Dam Thang (direct fist) Dam

Moc (hook punch), Dam Lao (javelinpunch) as well as basic leg levers.
