Provenance
These papers are part of the Walker Art Center’s institutional records. They were
stored on the roof after Martin Friedman’s retirement in 1990. Martin Friedman
continues to send documentation to be added to his collection.
Biography
Martin Friedman was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in1925. He attended
Taylor-Allerdice High School, Pittsburgh, and studied art at the Carnegie Institute of
Technology in 1940. In 1943 he attended the University of Pennsylvania but his studies
were interrupted by the war. He entered the ROTC naval program in 1944 and was
stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Academy in Illinois. After the war, Friedman went
to the University of Washington where he studied anthropology, art history and painting
and received a Bachelor of Arts degree. His education continued at the University of
California Los Angeles where he studied painting with Stanton MacDonald-Wright and
received a Masters of Arts. While attending UCLA he met his future wife, Mildred
(Mickey) and they were married in 1949. After graduate school, Friedman taught high
school and college art in the Los Angeles area for seven years. While in Los Angeles he
was influenced by Karl With, director of the Modern Institute, Beverly Hills, California.
In 1956 he was a fellow at the Brooklyn Museum of Art where he concentrated on the art
2
of the Congo. He also did graduate work at Columbia University in 1956. In 1957 he
received a Belgian American Foundation Fellowship and studied at the Musee Royale du
Congo Belge in Brussels. In 1958, Walker Art Center director, H. Harvard Arnason,
approached Friedman for the senior curator position at the Walker. In 1959 he received a
fellowship in American Art from the University of Minnesota. From 1959 to 1960,
Friedman was acting director of the Walker Art Center while Arnason taught art history
at the University of Hawaii, Honolulu. In 1961 Friedman won a Ford Foundation
fellowship but he had to turn it down when he was appointed director of the Walker Art
Center that same year. Arnason left the Walker to become vice president of the
Guggenheim Museum.
Friedman began his tenure as director intent on developing a stronger link with
the public through special exhibitions, education programs, lectures, films, music and
dance. Working with a limited budget, Friedman sought to acquire affordable artwork by
living artists at the beginning of their career. He fostered relationships with many artists
who are now well represented in the Walker’s permanent collection, including, Frank
Stella, Don Flavin, Donald Judd, Claes Oldenburg, Isamu Noguchi, Mark Di Suvero, Roy
Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Deborah Butterfield, and Louise Nevelson. Likewise he
fostered relationships with several performing artists including Merce Cunningham and
Trisha Brown.
In 1969, Mickey Friedman joined the Walker staff as curator of Design and editor
of Design Quarterly continuing the long established tradition of design programming at
the Walker. During the Friedmans’ tenure, the Walker organized several design shows
3
including New Learning Spaces and Places, 1974 ; De Stijl , 1982 ; and Tokyo: Form
and Spirit , 1986.
Also in 1969, the old Walker Art Center building was torn down. The new
building designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes, opened May 15, 1971. At the time of the
opening the new Walker Art Center received many honors and was regarded as one of the
best museums for the display of contemporary works of art. Concurrently to the building
construction, Martin Friedman began discussions with the City of Minneapolis about the
use of the adjacent parkland known as the Armory Gardens. The culmination of his
efforts would be the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.
In 1986 for his 25th anniversary as director, 86 former board members
commissioned a work by Roy Lichtenstein, entitled Salute to Painting (1985-1986). The
sculpture was donated to the Walker Art Center in Friedman’s honor. In 1989 Friedman
was awarded the National Medal of Arts from President George Bush. Martin and
Mickey Friedman retired November 1, 1990 and moved to New York City. At the time
of his retirement, Martin Friedman’s tenure was the longest of any museum director in
any one museum.
.
Scope and Content
The Martin Friedman papers, 1961 - 1990, is the third series in the record group
Director’s Office. (see also Series 1 Daniel S. Defenbacher papers, 1940-1950, Series 2
H. Harvard Arnason papers, 1951-1960). Within this series are subseries: Alphabetical
Files; Artists Correspondence; Chronological Files; Buildings and Grounds; Personal.
4
The subseries Alphabetical Files is the most comprehensive part of collection.
This subseries measures 28.5 linear feet (57 boxes), and includes letters, memoranda and
minutes on the day to day operation of the Walker, as well as, long range plans and
projects. This subseries also includes Friedman’s professional activities such as lectures,
board and committee minutes, and correspondence. The files are arranged alphabetically
by subject and then chronologically by year. Within this subseries will be repeating
folder names for each year, these include: Activities (Lectures and Juries), Acquisitions
Impossible and Possible, Correspondence(General), Dealers and Galleries, Exhibitions
Impossible and Possible, Government, Inquiries, Museums, Schools, Travel, T.B.
Walker Foundation, and Walker Art Center Board of Directors. In addition, each
department or programming area is listed alphabetically by name, these include: Center
Arts Council, Contemporary Arts Group, Design, Design Quarterly, Development,
Education, Film, Film/Video, Library, Media, Membership, Performing Arts, Public
Relations, and Sales and Rental Gallery. Within each folder documents are filed
chronologically. Where folder names include A - Z, folders are organized alphabetically
by bundle and chronologically within each bundle, these include: Acquisitions,
Activities, Correspondence (General), Dealers and Galleries, Exhibitions, Museums and
Schools. Organizations are filed alphabetically by name for example: Association of Art
Museum Directors, Ford Foundation, and Spring Hill Conference Center.
The Alphabetical Files are rich in documentation that charts the progress of the
Walker Art Center from a respected regional art center to a leading international
contemporary arts museum. Friedman focused the Walker Art Center’s resources on
exhibiting and collecting young artists, for example, in the exhibition London: The New
5
Scene, 1965, the Walker presented young British artists including Bernard Cohen, David
Hockney and William Tucker (see: Correspondence A - Z 1965), and acquired Joe
Tilson’s Look! (1964) from the show. While Friedman worked with younger artists, he
also continued to build programs around more established modern artists, such as in the
lecture program Symbolism in Modern Art 1962. For this lecture Friedman corresponded
with Elaine de Kooning for insights into Willem de Kooning’s Women paintings.(see
Activities: Lecture: “Symbolism in Modern Art: Willem de Kooning’s Women
Paintings”: de Kooning, Elaine 1962). He also organized major international exhibitions
throughout his career beginning with the American entry for the 1963 Sao Paulo Bienal
featuring Adolph Gottlieb. (see: Artists Correspondence: Gottlieb 1965-1967 for
Gottlieb correspondence). The Alphabetical Files reveal Friedman’s focus and energies
of the time, whether he is corresponding with a dealer or museum colleague his
correspondence will often give insights into current projects, the Sao Paulo exhibition is a
good example (see: Correspondence E 1963 for a description of the exhibition). He also
discusses his interests and ideas for future projects with New York Times critic, Hilton
Kramer throughout his tenure (see: Correspondence K 1961-1990).
Friedman worked closely with other programming areas particularly Performing
Arts and Film/Video, two departments that previously were run by volunteers (see:
Center Arts Council, 1961-1971). Friedman professionalized these activities creating
curatorial positions for Performing Arts in 1970 when he appointed Suzanne Weil
coordinator; and Film, with the appointment of John Hanhardt in 1973. Suzanne Weil
brought to the Walker innovative artists particularly dancers, including Trisha Brown,
Twyla Tharpe and Merce Cunningham (see: Performing Arts: Suzanne Weil 1976 for
6
description of programming growth). The Film Department was solidified when
Edmund and Evelyn R. Ruben donated their unique collection of film prints known as the
Ruben Film Study Collection in 1973(see: Film WAC: Edmund R. and Evelyn Ruben
Film Study Collection: Donation, 1973).
During the Seventies and Eighties Friedman was particularly interested in new
media projects. Several innovative programs were developed, including: the New
Learning Museum, 1979-1981 (see New Learning Museum Program WAC: Meanings of
Modernism, 1978-1981); the Monitor Program (see: Media WAC: Monitor Program,
1981-1984); and Videotape Pilot Projects (see: Videotape Program WAC 1974-1975, see
also Audiotape Program WAC: “Artist Talks About His Art” Pilot Project, 1967).
Friedman worked very closely with the Walker Art Center Board of Directors and
the T.B. Walker Foundation. The Board of Directors is ultimately responsible for the
direction of the Walker Art Center including, acquisitions, use of building and grounds,
fundraising, and developing community partners. The board also has a very hands-on
approach, for example, the Board of Directors was responsible for all fundraising
activities until 1977 when Robert Sain became the first Development director. The
Acquisitions Committee of the Board of Directors is responsible of outlining the direction
of the Permanent Collection (see:Walker Art Center Board of Directors: Acquisitions
Committee, 1969 - 1984). Also in these files will be correspondence and minutes
concerning the building and the grounds of the Walker Art Center. Although the day-to-
day progress of the new building is maintained in the Building and Grounds Files, the
Board of Directors files provide the vision for project. (See: Walker Art Center Board of
Directors and The T.B. Walker Foundation, 1965-1971 for building information).
7
The Board and Foundation files chart the development of the Walker from a
private institution to a public non-profit organization. From 1925 to 1976, the T.B.
Walker Foundation owned the building and grounds as well as most of the available
funds for the museum. Due to changing tax laws, both boards decided it was in the
museum’s best interest to dissolve the ties to the T.B. Walker Foundation. (see: Walker
Art Center Board of Directors and T.B. Walker Foundation, 1974-1976). In order to
insure the future of the museum, the Foundation donated 11.8 million dollars to start an
endowment fund for the museum. After 1976, several Foundation board members were
appointed to the Walker Art Center Board of Directors.
During the course of his directorship Friedman was an active member of several
arts organizations including the National Endowment for the Arts, for which he serves on
several committees and panels, including the 20th anniversary celebration committee in
1985 (see Government: National Endowment for the Arts, 1966-1990), Association of
American Museum Directors, for which he is president in 1978 (see: Association of Art
Museum Directors 1963 - 1984), American Federation of Arts (see: American Federation
of Arts, 1962 - 1985), and American Association of Museums (see: American
Association of Museums, 1963-1983). He serves on several boards and committees
including the National Collection of Fine Art (see: Museums: Smithsonian Institution:
National Collection of Fine Arts: Commissions 1968 - 1972), the Nicollet Mall Advisory
Board (see Nicollet Mall Dedication: Calder, Alexander 1967), and the National Council
for the Arts which oversees the National Endowment for the Arts (see: Government:
National Council for the Arts, 1965-1985). Throughout his career, Friedman stood up for
artists rights, including giving testimony during the Robert Mapplethorpe controversy in
8
1990 (see Government: National Endowment for the Arts: Robert Mapplethorpe
Controversy: Testimony 1990).
The Artists Correspondence subseries measures 3.5 linear feet (6 boxes) and
includes original letters from artists. The majority of letters from 1961 to 1985 were
originally filed in the Alphabetical Files. From 1985 to 1990, several attempts were made
by various secretaries to create an Artists Correspondence series in some cases artists
letters were removed from older files destroying the original order. The Artists
Correspondence subseries now reflects both the original order of the artist letter and the
desire to create a separate artist file. The artist letters have been separated placed in mylar
and filed alphabetically in chronological sequence. A copy of each letter exists in the
original file. Both the copy and original have been notated with original location and
current location. This method ensures the safety of the original letter and the contextual
materials surrounding it, while allowing researchers to locate artist correspondence
quickly. The correspondence is varied and at times insightful, from the humorous
postcards of Ant Farm (see: Ant Farm 1971, 1976) to the project descriptions of Paul
Thek. (see: Thek, Paul 1973-1976).
Completed container lists exist for both Alphabetical Files and Artists
Correspondence. For Alphabetical Files see A-MF for Artists Correspondence see AR-
MF.
Subseries Chronological Files measure 24 linear feet (12 boxes) and are copies of
letters sent by Martin Friedman. The originals are in the Alphabetical Files. The
Chronological Files are arranged chronologically by date. These files have not been
processed as they are duplicates of the Alphabetical Files.
9
Subseries Building and Grounds Files measure 4 linear feet (2 boxes) and include
documentation on: Walker Art Center new building construction and Guthrie Theater
renovation 1969-1971; Walker Addition 1984; and Minneapolis Sculpture Garden 1976-
1988. These files have not been processed as yet, but will be in the future.
Subseries Personal Files measure 4 linear feet and include documentation on
Martin Friedman’s personal projects outside of his duties as the Walker Art Center
director or professional obligations as a museum director. These files are primarily
correspondence concerning his book on Charles Sheeler published in 1976 and have not
been processed but will be in the future.
