October has been a big month! How did the Green Square Gourmet Food Festival turn out? And the Long dinner? And did we win our award at the Sydney business of the year awards? Read on to find out...

THE AWARDS

So did we win? YES, YES, YES!!!! Not only did we win business of the year for our category we also won a “high achiever award” from the mayor for sustainability, woohoo!! So, MARTIN picked up two awards on the night and we couldn’t be happier. Thanks so much to the wonderful community and clients that we deal with on a daily basis we are truly lucky to work with, and in, such a great community!

GREEN SQUARE GOURMET FOOD FESTIVALIt was far from great weather, with constant drizzle all day however this did not deter the locals and we had a total of 6,000 people visit the festival, this was double our estimate! Nearly all of the food vendors were sold out and we had to restock the bar twice! It was an amazing success and we will definitely be hosting it again next year.

THE LONG DINNERThis was a ‘pop-up’ dinner that we put on for all of the local businesses, schools, residents and anyone that was up for a good time! This dinner was very popular and was sold out within the first few weeks of tickets being available. With a 5 piece band playing during the dinner and only disturbed by a three song solo performance from one of the local singers at Alexandria’s village performing arts centre it definitely set the stage for a great night of food, wine and song. Again, this will be on in 2013 too!

THE MARKETWe continue to set records in both leasing and selling of apartments in the green square area and the market is showing no signs of slowing. With interest rates at record lows and confidence returning to the Sydney property market the outlook for the next 12-24 months is for growth.

Martin Property is proud to say we held the first Green Square Gourmet Food Festival, as part of the Crave Sydney International Food Festival. We had over 12 local gourmet food stalls, exceptional market stalls and a devoted children’s entertainment area. Throughout the day we had more than 6,000 people at the festival. Not even the rainy day stopped people from coming. DJ Jay KATS was playing nice tunes all day, the kids lined up for face painting and the adults for the bar and of course the photo booth.

The evening came around pretty quickly and it was time for the Green Square Gourmet Dinner. MARTIN property invited 170 people to a 3 course sit down dinner in Joynton Park and brought together Danks St Depot, Longrain Restaurant and The French House who delivered an unforgettable feast. Live music was playing throughout the night plus we had two outstanding performances from X-factor singer, Briden Star!

MARTIN Property would like to thank all 6,000 people that attended the MARTIN Green Square Gourmet Food Festival. We will be back again next year, see you then!

The Great Crate “What is it?”

No doubt you will have noticed a 3-storey green cube outside Green Square Station – and no doubt you have asked “what is it?” Well, it is The Great Crate - part of the City of Sydney’s Art & About Festival 2012 www.artandabout.com.auCreated by Plus 1 it is a site-specific public artwork aimed at asking the question “what is Green Square? – and what will it become?”With a primary concern for ensuring the artwork sent out a message of sustainability; it features over 25,000 edible plants, many of which have been grown from seed by the local community.

These plants are exhibited on 256 rented green shipping-pallets fixed to scaffolding Both these elements will be returned to service at the end of the show and the installation is totally ‘off-grid’ with power coming from solar panels“Whatever we possess becomes of double value when we have the opportunity of sharing it with others”Plus 1 have been bowled over by the positivity and support from the local community. Come down to Green Square on 20/21 October and collect FREE plants to take home for replanting in your garden or balcony.

Come one, come all – even if you have not been involved yet – it is not too late!

Green Square GrowersAs spring has arrived, here are some easy and useful tips for caring for your plants and planter boxes in your living space.

• Ensure there is plenty of sun for your plants.

• Build up your soil. The foundation of a healthy, productive garden is a rich, well-draining, crumbly soil that has good tilth. Liberally add organic matter such as finished compost, bagged humus and straw.

• Water your plants on regularly. However, don’t drown them.

• Ensure your crops are for the right season. Spring is a great time to plant zucchini, tomatoes, basil, beetroot, capsicums, mint, or cucumbers.

• Add mulch to your planter boxes. This will help conserve moisture and suppress any weeds.

• Consider companion planting. This is a great way of keep pests

down. The smell of marigold can do wonders against flying pests. Otherwise, coffee grounds could keep snails away.

• Make the most of your space. To maximise your growing space, tomatoes, cucumbers or beans are excellent climbers.

• Get a worm warm. These are simple to maintain and provides yearlong fertilizer to your garden.

Come down to meet fellow gardeners - The Green Square Growers. We meet the second Sunday of each month. www.facebook.com/greensquaregrowers

Adamo Pavirani Adamo’s PastaHe is the king of pasta and has a heart of gold. That’s how I believe many people would describe him. His parents moved from Italy to Australia in 1972, two years before Adamo was born. He spent most of his childhood in Bankstown and went to Dela Sale Bankstown School up until year 9. Back in 1988 Adamo’s parents opened the very successful Center Pasta in Liverpool where Adamo worked together with his parents. After many years of fun times and hard work they decided to sell the business earlier this year. Adamo has a big passion for food and he always wanted to do something different so he decided to open his own business back in 2007 – Adamo’s Pasta. Since opening the door the feedback has been amazing, retail has been taking off and lunches are huge. Now up to a point where he decided to open a new store basically next door to Adamo’s pasta at the beginning of next year. It will be more space for people to eat in and also even more food options. Adamo says it’s important for him to keep the traditional recipes as some of them are from his father’s town back in Italy. With all this hard work with such a successful business Adamo could not do it without the amazing support he gets from partner of 9 years, Heath. On the 22nd of September this year they went to Tuscany in Italy and got married. The celebration went on for four days and had friends and family from both Italy and Australia. – Adamo describes it as “the best 3 weeks of my life”.

What’s your favourite dish? – Pumpkin Ravioli with amatriciana sauce. (Which you can buy from the store). What’s your favourite holiday place? Morocco, I went there for my honeymoon. What do you love about this area? All the specialty stores, it’s central and close to the city and everyone is very friendly around here.

The footy season is over for your average player and fan of the game, but for some of the elite players of the Alexandria Rovers, there is no off season, since the final whistle was blown in late September a select group of boys have been in

training and pushing their bodies to the limit, to play in carnivals and trial for representative teams. Over the October long weekend, the annual NSW Indigenous rugby league carnival was held at Raymond Terrace, and the Rovers supplied 17 players to the various teams competing up there, many of our clubs boys were selected for the Gadigal Warriors under 17 team, which progressed through to the quarter finals of the competition. The rep season doesn’t end at the end of the season and the Rovers were well represented in the various teams, our club supplied the coach, trainer and two players to the Australian Indigenous Under 16 team, in the same tournament, our club had players represent Fiji, Cook Islands, Samoa, Tonga, Mediterranean and Lebanon, a great mix of nationalities, which once again shows that racial tolerance is more than practised at the rovers. Two big highlight’s for two of our clubs players and one official were selection in teams which toured overseas:Andrew Tuigamala was selected in a South Sydney team which

toured the UK for 17 days and Andrew was rewarded by being named the tour captain and was voted the player of the tour, a great reward for a man who coaches kids teams at our club and is always willing to help out where required.Shane Nolan was selected in the NSW under 16 Youth Development team which toured Dubai, France and Spain for 15 days, Shane played 3 games on tour and scored 4 tries and kicked 17 goals in those 3 games.Perry Johnstone was selected as manager of the NSW team and also toured with the above mentioned tour. Finally to continue with the rep teams theme our club has currently got an additional 11 players, who are in summer squads in various aged teams Under 20, 18 and 16’s with five different NRL clubs who will be training up to 4 sessions a week over the summer months, trying to earn selection for the 2013 season.Everyone at the Rovers would like to congratulate our clubs major sponsor Martin, on winning the City of Sydney Business Award, its great recognition for a local business putting back and building community ties with the people of the inner city.

propertypresentation tipsProperties that are presented well generally receive the most buyer interest. It is worth keeping the palette of your interior neutral to appeal to the majority of the market. The same theory still applies if have just bought a place and are thinking of renovating. The benefit of neutrals is that you can always introduce accent colours by using cushions, accessories, artwork and lighting. When all the elements are combined you will still achieve a visually dynamic space.Paint colour trends are shifting to light greys and stone, earthy tones. In saying this white will always remain a popular choice, as it reflects the light around and can enhance the feeling of space. Floor coverings such as charcoal, fawn or lightly textured carpets are great. Paired with grey or stone tiles or medium to dark floorboards will help to create a blank canvas any potential buyer can add their own touch to. Also an a new owner you cannot go wrong if you start with neutral base, just use the principals of layering to introduce texture, pattern and colour to your home. If you want help with styling, call Justine 02 9460 0066 or email her on [email protected].
