Shutter Island Martin Scorsese directed a thriller called ‘Shutter Island’. Shutter Island is about an island which has been built for the mentally ill. It holds dangerous people who are violent and are locked up at night so that they are not putting anyone else in any harm. These people can hurt people if they come across any weapons. This thriller contains violent behaviour and the use of guns to protect them from harm or the complete opposite (if you’re mentally ill). There is a lot of dramatic make-up used to show wounds across the patient’s body; this demonstrating that these people are dangerous and can be capable of serious damage to another person.

HugoHugo was another big production that Martin Scorsese directed. It was set in the 1930’s and is a tale of an orphan boy who lives in the train stations walls. The genre of this film is family. It is made for all ages because it’s about a young boy who will do anything to fix an automation left by his dad. Hugo needs to find a key for his automation to work. The film takes us through his adventures and the other characters we meet, such as a shoe-keeper and his granddaughter. Hugo is full of mystery and adventure. This is definitely a film in which Martin directed well choosing great actors for each role.

Wolf Of Wall StreetThe Wolf of Wall Street was a big movie to direct but Martin managed to make every part of it right. The Wolf of Wall Street is based on a true story and won best motion picture of the year, whilst also being nominated for an Oscar. The film’s genre is comedy and crime. It has a car crash involved and also has drink driving and use of drugs. It’s an upbeat film which always keeps you interested. It shows that brokers don’t always live the high life when the federal government gets involved. It is a rude film; therefore you have to be 18 or over to watch it. There are sexual scenes and a large amount of bad language.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Out of the large amount of movies that Martin Scorsese has directed, the more used actor is Leonardo DiCaprio. He takes part as the main characters in Shutter Island and The Wolf of Wall Street. His experience of acting can allow him to play most any part given, from a broker to a working class man. Martin helped Leonardo with his first big hit movies and from then on they have worked together in more and more films. Leonardo is now one of the biggest movie stars which means once in a new movie that movie gains a lot of popularity, this helps Martin’s films get sold.

Chloe Grace Moretz

Another familiar face in Hugo is Chloe Grace Moretz. Chloe has gone on to be a big film star and has been cast in the popular comedy ‘Kick-ass’ and also the horror ‘Carrie’. Martin knew that Chloe would become a star and he helped her as a child to gain a main role in his movie ‘Hugo’. Like Leonardo DiCaprio she can play mostly any characters. She started from a young age so has had years of growing up around big celebrities and maybe taking advice. Especially working with Martin because he uses big actors/actresses in his films, such as Jude Law.

Hugo

Martin Scorsese directed ‘Hugo’ mainly based in the train station; to be more clearer in the train walls where Hugo lives. He used old trains to demonstrate that the story was based in the 1930’s whilst also having the actors wear clothes which suited the time period; including long socks, grey dresses and the wardens blue outfit.

The Wolf of Wall Street

The settings in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’ are mainly places which only wealthy people are able to be .e.g. Jordan’s mansion, the jet, the work office and wherever there are expensive, illegal drugs. The outfits which people wear are mainly suits to show they can afford to wear them and also sunglasses to hide their eyes from clients to get them to work with Jordan. The buildings are mainly made from glass and have a stunning view from them, this suggesting when people come round (especially to the office) people will think it is a suitable place of work.

Shutter Island

In ‘Shutter Island’ there is a use of an overhead shot where it looks over the island so that the viewers all get a understanding of the isolation of the patients who live there. There are a range of medium close ups, for example, when the detectives first arrive to the island we get a medium close up of how they first react to seeing the people inside of the building. Martins camerawork also consists on very long shots because he wants us to see how many people are on the island and out in the garden.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Martin Scorsese includes big close ups during the film mainly when people snort drugs to demonstrate that it happens constantly, they don’t just do it as a one time thing. A long shot is used when Jordan is crawling along the floor after taking a drug to show how powerless he is when he isn't working and how his life is a struggle but he doesn’t realise. High angle shots are used when people are standing on the balcony of the house party to show the viewers how big the house is and how many wealthy people there are.
