These scenarios play out and strip people of a happy retirement. A retirement that could have been spent leaving a legacy – not just in financial terms – rather, they are stripped of the ability to leave their footprint on the world, or make an impact on other peoples’ lives - friends, family or causes close to the heart.

Not always, but typically, the retiring folk in the UK will make one, two or sometimes all three, of the biggest money mistakes of their lives; mistakes that will see them

ʄ I am an investment adviser, not an investment forecaster, trader or speculator. I don’t believe anybody on the planet can predict the highs and lows of equity markets, or outperform the markets repeatedly, on a continuous basis.

ʄ Equity markets should be favoured over fixed income markets - even during retirement years contrary to what a risk test may say.

ʄ Developed and emerging world equity markets should be deployed in their entirety and trusted to deliver annualised returns far higher than those from cash or fixed income.

ʄ Small-cap equity and value-cap equity exposure, alongside main market large-cap equity exposure, is in my opinion essential to give uplifted returns over time.

ʄ Investments into companies that focus on global sustainability and with an environmental focus should be utilised whereever possible such that portfolios are future proof and exposed to investments and companies that make a difference to the world.

ʄ That collective exposure to all groups and classes of equities, throughout both the developed and emerging world, offers asset, sector and geographic diversification to capture returns from all markets that ebb and flow over time.

ʄ All of the evidence I have found points towards our strategy winning over pure actively managed alternatives that fail in over 80% of cases * (most recently by The University of London, Cass Business School).

ʄ Keep overall fund, adviser, platform, product and wrapper costs at a maximum of circa 1.5% per annum such that the drag on investment growth is relatively low.

ʄ Not selling out and keeping calm when the markets tank every 7 years or so, whilst everyone else’s behaviour is, or certainly shows form, for being erratic.

ʄ And in fact, doubling up on any regular contributions when the markets do tank as much as possible - for further buy-in whilst ‘prices’ are low.

ʄ We focus on safe income withdrawal to support retirement income needs, as the years unfold, whilst managing inflation and we keep fees low and In my opinion, that’s pretty much all it takes to make, and then keep people wealthy.

ʄ With the investment piece sorted, I am then free to focus on financial planning for my clients and can look at bigger issues - like preserving capital throughout potentially three decades of retirement, delivering sufficient income against rising living costs, whilst also putting plans in place to make sure any surplus capital eventually passes to children or other beneficiaries like charities or good causes close to one’s heart, safely and tax efficiently.

ʄ Discretionary investment management - that serves to make everything appear supremely complicated, difficult and unmanageable save for by experts.

ʄ Big banks – having moved from a culture of adding value in the 1980’s ... to sales, scandals and extracting everything they can from us in more recent decades.

ʄ Big networks – the glossy networks, investment banks and fund managers all have layers of cost ... picked up by the client.

ʄ Fund pickers – because they get beat up, if not regularly, almost certainly eventually and when it happens the clients don’t get through their 30 year retirement.

Internally all dividends are automatically reinvested into the funds.

Funds then grow until such time they are accessed and any gains may be liable to Capital Gains Tax (CGT) if held in a General Investment Account (GIA).Funds are not taxed if held inside an individual savings account (ISA) - a 20K annual tax allowance available each tax year per person.

An annual CGT allowance currency 12,300 per person can be used each year.

Our ongoing management going forward would include us planning out and utilising this allowance for you - in practice, we sell and then buy the funds again to rebalance and utilise the CGT allowance to keep your funds efficient.

For UK Domiciled clients living abroad we may be able to support investment needs in advance of a repatriation back to the UK. This can be explored and agreed on a short 10 minute video conference call.

An offshore Investment Bond could be used and the returns would roll up grossly.

If accessing the Bond whilst still a non-UK resident you could be taxed in your local jurisdiction.

If that is a tax-free environment you may not be liable to any tax.

Depending on where you are resident, we may be able to manage your position in a simple General Investment Account (GIA).

If you are planning to repatriate back to the UK at some stage in the future the ISA would come into play and essentially all of the money would be in your GIA and where possible each year we would shift the annual allowance currently 20K from GIA to ISA.

It is the same investment, the ISA is simply an invisible shield we wrap around the money.

We can use an investment bond alongside, or instead of, a general investment account if your circumstances suggest one to be appropriate.

They are set up for 20 years and the returns would roll up allowing you to take 5% each year with any tax-deferred for the entire 20 year period.

Essentially you would be taking 100% of your own capital back over the term which is why it’s not technically classed as a ‘return on investment’ and liable to income tax.

This effective 5% net return can be extremely helpful if a higher rate taxpayer.

There are no fees for accessing your money in any of the investments we offer. There are no lock-ins. And no draconian ‘old-style financial services’ penalties. If you encash funds, outside of an ISA wrapper and those funds have gained in value, then capital gains tax (CGT) would be charged on gains above the annual allowance, per year, per person.

We do not report your business to HMRC, rather we provide annual tax statements directly from our preferred providers which can be passed to your Accountant.

As we progress we are generally asked to look at the wider estate planning picture as a joint estate valued in excess of 650K, or sole estate at 325K, would ultimately attract IHT at 40%. A residents nil rate band can uplift the joint IHT es-tate allowance from 650K to 1M subject to status and de-pendent on the overall value of your estate.

We do not, and have never, promoted, advised on, or recommended any tax planning or tax avoidance strat-egies.

We generally use platforms to administer client investments and if in default;

• Cash is subject to a maximum amount of £85000 per claim.

• Investments held in a General Investment Account (GIA), Stocks & Shares ISA and Self Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) are subject to a maximum amount of £85000 per claim. Investments and / or cash held in

a Personal Pension, Executive Pension, Section 32 Buy Out Bond, Qualifying Savings Plans and Onshore Bonds are subject to a maximum amount of 100% per claim with no upper limit.

• Investments and / or cash held in an Offshore Bond are subject to a maximum amount of 90% per claim with no upper limit.

All money is invested however into our range of funds that also offer protection.

In terms of the investment funds that we deploy; we use Vanguard to buy entire global stock markets and then Dimensional to buy small-cap and value cap markets. We can also invest into the entire listed global proper-ty market through Blackrock. As at December 2018 our research showed Vanguard had approximately 5 Trillion under management, Dimensional close to 363 Billion, and Blackrock 7 Trillion.

You have the highest levels of consumer protection, working with our family firm, through our FCA and FSCS licenses and our advice is also backed and underpinned through PI cover underwritten through Lloyds of London. All of this detail can be viewed in our Heads of Terms document.

The annual Investment Association (IA) report is also referred to for information on total funds managed in the UK and the split of what is managed on an active and passive basis. The data typically show that on average circa 80% of actively managed investment funds fail to keep up with the bench-mark index they track, over any period of time.

Passive investment strategies generally provide lower cost access to equity markets that deliver superior results over time.

The data also show small-cap and value-cap companies outperform large-cap growth stocks.
