Current Projects Resolving Disparities in Cancer Survivorship Outcome The American Cancer Society now has a funded program aimed to address cancer health disparities and other strategies to contribute to achieving health equity in cancer survivorship outcomes. These grants require CBPR as the research method. I am working on generating preliminary data and a research strategy critical to the development of a CBPR research study on the outcomes of impoverished women of color living in the central Florida region who are breast cancer survivors with the intent of a grant application submission in October 2015. A Focused Qualitative Analysis of Women's Unmet Needs After Cancer Treatment This is a third collaboration with Kevin Stein, PhD, Managing Director of the ACS Behavioral Research Center, National Home Office, Atlanta, GA, Gail Adorno, DSW, University of Texas, Arlington TX, Ellen Lopez, DPH, University of Alaska, Fairbanks AK. This study uses data from the ACS Study of Cancer Survivors, a population-based cross-sectional study that enrolled a cohort of nearly 10,000 cancer survivors who were 2, 5 or 10-years post-diagnosis who were randomly selected from cancer registries in 14 states in the U.S. The survey aimed to investigate the influence of behavioral, psychosocial treatment, and support factors on the quality of life and health behaviors of cancer survivors. This study explores how women cancer survivors experience their lives as cancer survivors, looking particularly for trends in women's race, age and education and post-treatment side-effects and difficulties in accessing care. Data is drawn from over 4,000 responses to an open-ended question about current unmet needs. A Pilot Interprofessional Educational Activity for Medical, Pharmacy and Social Work Students at UCF College of Medicine, University of Central Florida. This is a collaboration of the UCF College of Medicine, UCF School of Social Work and the UF College of Pharmacy. ln Fall 2014 and Spring 2015, faculty from each school are collaborating in two days of training students in collaborative team care. All first year medical students and pharmacy students will participate in the training. The training will involve the discussion of a current public health problem (i.e., homelessness and health), a case-based small group project, and a legislative policy development project. I am responsible for the development of the case and legislative project, the didactic presentation on homelessness and the pre/post evaluation of student learning.

From Burn-Out to Wellness: Changing Perspectives on Medical Internship Through the Use of Multispecialty Learning Communities (MSLC-). University of Miami College of Medicine. As U.S. medical residency programs enter the Next Accreditation System, more emphasis will be placed on the Clinical Learning Environment in which the residents work. The purpose of this study is to provide the further direction in the development of programs to reduce burnout among physicians in training. In addition, it will also study whether Learning Communities change attitudes toward wellness, professionalism and perceived control, and whether these attitudes are associated with quality of life and perceptions of stress of a first year resident. The aims of this study are to educate the interns in the areas of wellness and self-care, to improve communication skills, to address the challenges to professionalism during internship, and to encourage multidisciplinary collaboration in the areas of patient safety and quality. All residents in the first year of training (N=188) in the UM/Jackson Memorial Hospital residency training programs will be enrolled in a new educational initiative: Multispecialty Learning Communities (MSLC). Based on their specialty, each will be given a group assignment. There will be approximately 14 total MSLC groups with approximately 13 residents per group. Each group will have a faculty Facilitator (MD, DO or PhD-level). The groups will discuss topics including Physician Wellness & Self Care, Difficult Conversations & Wellness Exercise, Professionalism, Residents as Teachers, & Patient Safety & Quality. I am collaborating with the UM/Jackson Memorial graduate medical education faculty on the evaluation of pre-post evaluations by residents participating in these MLSC experiences in 2014 and 2015. Unmet Needs of Cancer Survivors: An Analysis of Qualitative Data from the American Cancer Society’s (ACS) Study of Cancer Survivors. This is a collaboration with Kevin Stein, PhD, Managing Director of the ACS Behavioral Research Center, National Home Office, Atlanta, GA, Gail Adorno, DSW, University of Texas, Arlington TX, Ellen Lopez, DPH, University of Alaska, Fairbanks AK, and Victoria Loerzel, PhD, RN, OCN, UCF College of Nursing. I am the primary author on the first of a series of manuscripts exploring themes and trends in unmet needs of cancer survivors. The survey aims to investigate the influence of behavioral, psychosocial treatment, and support factors on the quality of life and health behaviors of cancer survivors. This set of collaborative manuscripts will analyze responses to several open-ended survey questions about survivors’ current and past unmet needs and what types of support services would have been most helpful during their cancer experience.

Goal This project’s objective is to develop a rapid, easy to use screening tool for primary care providers to assess Alzheimer's patients' risk for harmful behaviors at an early stage. This early warning system will activate referrals for training and support to caregivers of Alzheimer's patients, so that education and preparedness can be addressed prior to arriving at a crisis. In this project we will invite late stage dementia caregivers who have already experienced some of these high risk behaviors with their loved ones to participate in focus groups to help inform us in developing the screening tool.
