DEPUTY Premier BryanGreen continues to confirmby his performance that hismisjudgment on the Tasman-
ian Compliance Corporation was nota one-off. Obviously the ministersuffers from chronic, deeply in-grained and probably incurable lackof judgment.
How else could one describe thelatest pratfall from the man PremierPaul Lennon is proud to have in hisCabinet (or has to have in his Cabinetbecause there is no one else)?
A week after he admitted thatsigning a special deal for his Labormates who run the corporation waswrong, the Tasmanian electorateagain wakes up to find Mr Green can’tlie straight in bed.
What was supposed to be anapology — complete, transparent andcontrite — is turning out to be a
marathon in tooth-pulling by theOpposition.
Only days after Mr Green said hewas sorry for his poor judgment, hewas refusing to answer the unan-swered questions prompted by hisstatement to parliament.
By the end of last week he was bothlaying on with a trowel the personalpain he has been through while at thesame time strutting the stage as areconstituted rooster.
And now he’s refusing to confirmor deny that his department’s advicewas not to grant TCC a $2.5 millioncompo deal if its contract was termi-nated early (by a change of govern-ment, for example) and that he in-sisted the clause go back in.
The Opposition says it has theevidence that this is so, and theMinister is failing to give the answerthat will go some way to restoringwhat little reputation he has left.
And the tactic is very simple: tellthe truth, tell the whole story, not justthose bits you think you can get awaywith. For eventually the truth willcome out, as the forum of parliamentproves time and again.
Mr Green has played the contritepolitician seeking the understandingof the electorate for a rare slip at abusy time with all that paperwork todeal with. But the more he is cross-examined in parliament, the more itbecomes obvious these are crocodiletears.
Mr Green and his colleagues needto be reminded that they answer tothe parliament. Executive govern-ment does not just wheel off and do its
own thing without reference to par-liament. And it doesn’t arrogantlydismiss it by slipping and slidingaround the truth and by failing toanswer questions.
There’s no better example of agovernment infected with hubristhan Mr Green’s arrogance in sayinghis vote will go up as a result of thisissue, not down.
Clearly from that statement therewas very little sincerity and a greatdeal of cynicism in his now tatty anddiscredited mea culpa.
Mr Green only fessed up because hewas pressured by the Premier, notbecause of some blinding flash ofconscience and insight. After all, oneneeds to exercise some judgment to becapable of either. The Minister, withevery bumbling utterance in parlia-ment, proves that he is bereft of anysuch skill.

The laying of the foundationstone of this deception has nowsurfaced with the revelations offormer defence minister IanMcLachlan, who produced writ-ten proof of the deal done betweenthe Prime Minister and the Treas-urer regarding Mr Costello’s as-cension to the prime minister-ship. Despite the existence of thenotes, the witness to the meetingand Mr Costello’s own confirma-tion of the discussion, the PrimeMinister refutes all of this anddenies he ever made any deal tostep aside.

Bantick penaltyWITH reference to Chris Ban-tick’s article slagging soccer,Aussie Rules is a minor code offootball together with Irish foot-ball, American football and therugby codes.
I note that many people likeChris Bantick have a chip ontheir shoulder about the world’smost popular sport.
I can name a few things wrongwith Aussie Rules. Firstly, why
all those goalposts? It’s like enter-ing a rainforest.
Secondly, the number of um-pires is just about a soccer teamin itself. And thirdly, all thosenon-officials running around theoval with drink bottles while thegame is in progress.
Goals have little value becausethey are scored as in basketballand there is no fluency to thegame. For example, a highlightcould be four passes by one team.The rest is just a scramble andmost games are decided by half-time.
Aussie Rules — what rules?Are there any? A soccer game ismiles ahead of an Aussie Rulesgame. There is no comparison,just ask most people on planetEarth.

Heat pump woesWHEN I lived in Hobart, 10tonnes of wood a year was themost I would use.
But upon moving to the WestCoast where it rains a lot thanksto the Hydro cloud-seeding, myusage doubled. The installation ofa heat pump around three yearsago seemed to be a very goodalternative.
But after three years my heatpump decided it no longer wantedto perform. Although under war-ranty, it took three months for itto be repaired.
As far as I know, spare parts forthis particular make are not keptin Australia.
If you are thinking of installinga heat pump, go to a dealer whonot only installs them but has thespare parts if they break.

SUGGESTIONS by the formerdean of education at the Univer-sity of Tasmania, Prof BrianCaldwell (Mercury, July 5), thatschools should be bulldozed andrebuilt in order to address chang-ing educational needs may beeffective in grabbing headlines,but in reality little else.
There appear to be a raft ofexperts willing to give their 10cents worth in relation to theTasmanian education system, butfew seem willing to take responsi-bility for the consequences oftheir grand plans.
I doubt there are many in-volved in the education systemwho would not like new facilities,but surely it is the quality ofteachers and their ability that
lies at the core of our system.
Bricks and mortar do not agood school make — it has alwaysbeen and will continue to be thequality of teaching staff thatmakes the difference between amediocre educational experienceand an excellent one.

There is only a small minoritywho profit from such mismanage-ment, while the majority have tokeep paying taxes.
One long term pollie has said,‘‘if you pay peanuts, you getmonkeys!’’ Well, we (the taxpayer)are paying more for their wages,but are we still getting monkeys?
Is there any accountability? Ifthese people were in private enter-prise and made such decisionsthey would either be out on thestreet.
The state of our roads, ourhospitals, our schools, our policeand other infrastructure leaves alot to be desired! Where has all themoney gone? Where does it go to?It is nice of your newspaper tohighlight government backroomdeals and inadequacies, but does it
make a lick of difference?Directors and CEOs of compa-
nies such as HIH and Enron, plusprobably many others, have andwill spend time in jail for misman-agement issues, so why not electedofficials?
These people want to receivethe income and have the responsi-bility, so if they screw up theyshould suffer the appropriate con-sequences. Or, are parliamentar-ians a law unto themselves?
If politicians are after open andaccountable government, let thempublish a yearly balance sheet toshow government income (fromall sources) and government ex-penditure (to all sources).
All businesses provide theirshareholders with such a state-ment, so why not governments?
We (the taxpayer) are the share-holders!
