A few thoughts from our president…By Mary Hanzel President, Altrusa Club of Green BayEleven years ago we had a vision, the community

had a need, and you, our donors, helped to make the Altrusa House a reality.

Year after year, you continue to stand with us, making generous donations to keep the Altrusa House a haven for our guests who are here to either support a loved one receiving medical treatment or who them-selves are undergoing outpatient services.

As we reflect on the past decade think, for a mo-ment, what it would mean not to have a facility like the Altrusa House.

Cont. from page 1....Thoughts from our president After many sleepless nights, she chose to sleep in her car in the hospital parking lot. The lack of a comfortable place to sleep and re-energize only added to Pat’s stress and anxiety. She said to me, if only there had been a place like the Altrusa House…

The future suggests that Green Bay will remain a major medical center. The recent announcement that the Medical College of Wis-consin will be building a campus here will only strengthen the success of the medical corridor and make this area even more sought after for medical services. Your future donations are even more important to assure the Altrusa House can continue to be an integral link to the medical community and the people it serves.

Your donations make a difference. Together we can continue to have an effect on many, many lives for many more decades.

By Nancy Dworak, Golf Outing Co-ChairAs the Altrusa House enters its second decade of

service, the 6th Annual Altrusa Golf Outing held June 12, 2012, made a location change to Mid Vallee Golf Course in De Pere. It was a beautiful, sunny day for golf – and it was a grand success for the people who use the Altrusa House, raising over $14,500!

Mid Vallee is a wonderful location for our growing golf event, giving us the capability to expand the out-ing to 27 holes down the road. New this year were our “Company Sponsors” which were Stellpflug Law, SC, Best Built, Inc., Schneider National Foundation, Inc., AK Pizza Crust, Green Bay Home Medical, Green Bay & Allouez Animal Hospitals and Cyber Green LLC. We would like to extend “a big thank you” to those com-pany sponsors for their support of the Altrusa House.

Another first this year was our hole-in-one winner, Dave Frizzo, who sank a shot on Red One at Mid Vallee Golf Course. Dave won a set of irons sponsored by Brennan Buick of Green Bay. Thank you to Brennan Buick for your continued support!

Next year our outing will be held Tuesday, June 11, 2013, so please save the date --we’d love to see you again! And remember, there’s room for additional golf-ers so tell your friends and family! The Altrusa Club of Green Bay will be spending tireless hours preparing for the outing over the winter and spring, and we guarantee nothing less than a great and worthwhile time.

By Paula Hafeman, Chief Nurse Executive St. Mary's and St. Vincent Hospitals

It was my honor to represent St. Vincent and St. Mary’s Hospitals last Oct. 29, 2011, at the 10th anniversary celebration of the Altrusa House.

It was a beautiful fall day and I was honored to be part of a team of speakers along with the mayor and other local representatives to cele-brate the successes of the past 10 years and to kick off another decade of great service.

As the Chief Nurse Executive at St. Mary’s and St. Vincent Hospitals it is very important to let each of you know how valued the services of the Altrusa House are to our patient, their families and our healthcare providers.

As a nursing leader, we want our patients to have the best possible experience and they can heal and recover much more quickly if they are surrounded by family and friends.

However, as a regional acute care facility many of our patients come from the 11 sur-rounding counties and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. We experience this every day, the hus-band married to his wife for 60 years, who now has cancer and will need to receive inpatient treatment for 30 days. Or the parents whose teenager was involved in an accident and needs inpatient rehab.

Just recently a case manager offered this feedback on the Altrusa House.

A gentleman from the Manitowoc area had been admitted here multiple times and did even-tually pass away here. His wife stayed at the Al-trusa House and she always had really wonder-ful things to say about the people there and how grateful she was to have them. She considered herself very lucky.

She recalled one late evening when she somehow locked herself out of the building and had to call to be let back in. She said they very graciously never said a word even though she was in her pajamas. That, she said, is kindness.

Whenever I hear from anyone staying there, said the case manager, they are incredibly grateful that they have the Altrusa House. The Altrusa House is a gift!

Anniversary celebrates the ‘gift’ of the Altrusa House

What is the Altrusa House of Green Bay?

The Altrusa House at 1116 E. Mason St. in Green Bay is a 12-bedroom “home away from home” opened in 2001 by Altru-sa International of Green Bay. Its express purpose is to offer temporary accommo-dations to people in need of medical treat-ments or because they are in Green Bay to support a friend or loved one.

Other than a $10 key fee, we provide this service to our guests at no charge for as many days as they need and will con-tinue to do so because of generous donors like you.

Guests generally live 50 miles or far-ther away from Green Bay and are referred to the Altrusa House by one of the hospi-tals in our community. People have come from many areas of Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to receive the superior medical treatment they find here in Green Bay.

And because of accidents and sudden illnesses, our guests have also come from around the nation and world.

The Altrusa House was dedicated on a very memorable autumn day Oct. 3, 2001, after years of planning by the Altrusa Club of Green Bay, the local chapter of the in-ternational service organization.

The Altrusa House features 12 bed-rooms – each lovingly decorated by spon-sors -- plus a first-level living room, full kitchen and laundry room. There is also a spacious living area on the second level, with kitchenette. A donated chairlift allows handicapped accessibility to the eight sec-ond-level bedrooms.

Guests find the Altrusa House a place where they can rest and where they can al-ways find a newfound friend to talk with.

Altrusa House makes difference to guests Donette Hatch says the Altrusa House has made a difference in her family not just once but several times. A resident of Ephraim, she’s used the Altrusa House a couple times this year to be with her mother Audrey. And a few years ago her mother herself used the home while she was in Green Bay for treatment. At 85 miles away from Green Bay, it would be just too far away to travel on a daily basis, said Donette. “What would I do if this wasn’t here?” she asked. In August her mother wound up in the emergency room in Sturgeon Bay after a fall. Knowing her mother would be transferred to Green Bay, “I called here from the waiting room in Sturgeon Bay,” she said. “I feel very welcome here,” said Donette.

Pictured with Altrusa House manager Cheri Corcoran (left) is house guest Donette Hatch of Ephraim. She stayed at the house while her mother was in the hospital in Green Bay this summer.

A lovely surprise in the Altrusa gardensBy Barbara Moore,Green Bay AltrusanOn Labor Day I decided to head over to the Altrusa House to do some weed-

ing in our lovely gardens. What a wonderful surprise to arrive with my tools in hand and discover that someone had weeded all the flower beds, shaped the bushes and, besides that, hauled all the brush away. I was so excited and couldn’t wait to find out who did all the work. It was David Jaeger from Dunbar, Wis. David was a guest at the house for several days while his wife Janice was a patient at Bellin.

David had been a professional landscaper at one time…no wonder it looked so great! Thank you, David, for your gifts of time and talent!

Meet some of our volunteers “As I was walking my dog one day,” says Carol Magnin, “I saw the building and stopped in to talk with Cheri (my dog visited with her too!) and after that visit I started my volunteering.” Emily Kozlowski says, “When our first grandson was born, he was rushed to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee... While he was hospitalized there for two and a half nerve-wracking weeks his parents, other family members and myself were able to stay at the Ronald McDonald House... what a blessing it was.” Nicole Huxford says, “I found out about the Al-trusa House in the volunteer opportunities section of the newspaper… Some of the guests, I feel, come into our lives for a reason and I’m glad that I get the chance to know some of them as well as I do.” Kathi Sawyer, a busy mom with a two-year-old, says “the Altrusa House remains part of my routine and part of my family. As additional incentive, my em-ployer Prevea Health gives a monetary donation to the Altrusa House when I volunteer my time there.”

Rick Wrobel, a member of the Bellin Facility Maintenance crew, is one of the faithful employees of Bellin Health who support the Altrusa House. Bellin provides maintenance and security, plus parking space in an adjoining parking lot.

Remember us in your estate planning. The Altrusa House has an endowment fund established with the Green Bay

Community Foundation.

“After a long day at the hospital, it was nice to come to a relaxing home. The vol-unteers always have a smile on their faces and have been most welcoming and helpful.” -- Kay, Altrusa House guest

Entertainment troupe “The Sequins” presented the Altrusa House with a $500 donation recently. Accepting the donation are (left to right) Altrusans Kathy Rechsteiner and Barbara Moore. Kathy haD been a member of the talented group, which loves supporting worthy community partners like the Altrusa House.

With “Make a Difference Day” set for Saturday, Oct. 27, why not take a cue from Meghan Dwyer, 14, an 8th grader at Notre Dame Middle School in De Pere. She was involved with a “helping others” project at her school and from the “Wish List” at the Altrusa House gathered supplies from family and friends, plus bought some herself. Her parents are Kay and Sean Dwyer. Her dad Sean participates in our annual golf outing.

Emily Koslowski has volunteered at the Altrusa House eight or nine years. “We try to be available if someone just needs to talk,” she said.

We Thank All the Generous Donors Whose Contributions allow Us to Serve the Needs of the Community

And in the 2011-2012 time period we served what we call “3,364 peo-ple nights,” denoting how many individuals used the rooms throughout the year. That was up over 3,116 from 2010-2011.

In the now 11 years since the Altrusa House was opened, our vi-sion has never changed, explains Nancy Friebel, chairperson of the Altrusa House Committee. “We want them to feel like it’s their home for as long as they need to stay in Green Bay,” she said.

“Our house is just like your house only a lot bigger,” Friebel reflects “We have 12 guest bedrooms, nine bathrooms, two public bathrooms, two kitchens, two living rooms, an office suite and a laundry room. The cost to provide utilities, maintain and supply all of these rooms totaled approximately $38,000 last year.” And because of our wonderful vol-unteers, staff expenses are only $45,000 per year.

Now that the house is 11 years old, there has been some expected and unexpected wear, just like at your house, said Friebel. “Imagine having as many as 24 guests in your home for a week at a time,” she mused. Just this past year there has been a shower replacement and air conditioning problems during the heat of summer.

“The major project we decided to tackle was the need to replace all of the carpeting in the house,” said Friebel. A generous friend of Al-trusa House, Irene Daniell Kress, offered to pay for the entire project -- $21,300. “Words cannot express how thankful we were to have such a wonderful supporter,” she said. The next project is the laundry room.

Many guests ask how we can maintain this beautiful “home away from home” on such a small budget. “We like to say we run a very tight ship and really watch the dollars, and, we do,” said Friebel.
