Father DanThe first Sunday after Pentecost is Trinity Sunday, when we celebrate that God’s very nature is profound unity in diversity,Three-in-Oneness. The Sunday after that is Corpus Christi Sunday, when we celebrate the gift of the Eucharist where all ofthe diverse followers of Christ are gathered together by Him to share at one table and share of one heavenly Food and Drink– Jesus’ own Body and Blood, which make us one family, one body.As we continue to experience more diversity among our parish membership here, I keep looking for others whoseexperience of true unity in diversity can guide us. Franciscan Father Richard Rohr sent out a great reflection on this themerecently. I found it so helpful that I share it with you, below. Happy Trinity and Corpus Christi Sundays!

Diversity in CommunityMost of our churches are rather homogeneous. Yet church, of all places, should be inclusive and reflective of our diverseand complex world. Shane Claiborne describes the all too familiar scene:“We are always most comfortable around people who are like us. I think that's true of almost any human being. For thosewho have been in a majority population as white, middle class folks, we have to be extra deliberate about putting ourselvesin places where we are a minority. Maybe we should worship where we're a minority, where we can hear the Gospel withnew ears. Martin Luther King, Jr., lamented that eleven o'clock on Sunday morning is the most segregated hour in America. That must break the heart of God, that we often reinforce segregation rather than the reconciliation and the diversity of theKingdom. Some of that doesn't change in our congregations until it changes in our living rooms and at our dinner tables. We really have to begin having relational friendships that stretch us. And we also have to challenge the systems of privilegeand racism.”Christena Cleveland acknowledges that diversity is challenging. Cleveland writes, “In racially diverse churches, I can'tcontrol the environment. . . . People might worship in ways that make me uncomfortable. . . . People might not be able torelate to my experience as a black woman. . . . People might hold perspectives that shatter my world-view.” Being incommunity with those who are somehow different than us challenges our familiar ways of knowing, doing, and being inthe world. It forces us to see things differently and thus to change our attitudes and behaviors.Diversity in community also helps us recognize our own selfish preferences for ease and comfort. If we're truly going tofollow Jesus, the way will not be easy or popular. As Cleveland writes, Jesus "was so passionate about creating a diversefamily with us that he crossed metaphysical planes, abdicated his privilege, morphed into physical form, and spent 30 yearson earth just hanging out with us – all the while knowing that his pursuit of diversity would ultimately cost him his life."

NEXT DEADLINE FOR JUNE NEWS IS JUNE 3, 2016!

(continued from page 1)Observing nature, we see that diversity is essential to balance, wholeness, and resilience. Ecosystems thrive when a varietyof species of plants and animals nourish each other. Diverse environments are much stronger and less susceptible to pestsand disease than mono-crop fields. The world is a relational system full of complex inter-dependence among very differentcreatures. If we want sustainable communities, we must always welcome the "other" and learn to see our neighbor asourselves. Without it, we do not have community at all, but just egoic enclaves.

Social JusticeBUILD: On April 12th, 1843 diverse people from allover Lexington came together as one to ask city andstate officials to change current ways of doing thingsto adopt a new way to help many people live fullerlives.

Senator Kerr recommitted to working hard to end theusurious payday lending practice that allows peopleto be trapped in debt for a long time at ridiculousinterest rates and fees. Some people are getting veryrich on the backs of the poor and we want this to end!The work continues on this issue.

Shannon Sell with Bluegrass.org agreed to expandthe current ACTS team to serve 100 clients and getthe specialized training to treat people with coexistingmental health and addiction issues. She will also calltogether city officials and mental health professionalsto see about expanding mental health care, startingwith a needs assessment. Commissioner Ford andCouncilwoman Lamb agreed to be a part of thecommittee to start this process. All yesses to expandcare to the mentally ill in Lexington!

Police Chief Barnard has proposed his own initiativeto address crime and violence in Lexington, aprogram called My Brother's Keeper. He askedBUILD to support this initiative in response to ourask of him to adopt a proven program from theNational Network for Safe Cities. BUILD absolutelysupports the My Brother's Keeper program to reducecrime in the future by supporting at risk boys andbelieves that the expertise from the National Networkfor Safe Cities is an essential part of making thispossible. The program we recommend will addresscrime and violence in our neighborhoods now. TheMy Brother’s Keeper initiative addresses crime in thefuture. Chief Barnard did not agree to contact theNational Network for Safe Cities but did agree toinclude representatives of BUILD as My Brother'sKeeper starts to take shape.

MQHR Justice ministry came out strong at theNehemiah Action! We had 328 people from MQ, upfrom 232 last year! There were many peopleattending for the first time. I heard comments such as,“I learned about issues that people live with that I was

unaware of.” And, “I am so grateful that people careabout and are working to help people and familiesdealing with mental illness.” We had over 60 from theHispanic community, listening to the meeting throughtranslation devices, participating in city policy in apowerful way.

Being a part of MQ's justice ministry is an effectiveand powerful way to live out our faith and mandate todo justice. We will keep working to build theKingdom of God in Lexington. It works, we make adifference when we work together. Lexington iscloser to the Kingdom of God because of the issuesthat we have won for those struggling with injustices.

The Celebration will be Monday, June 6 at MQ in thegym. Dinner starts at 6:15, the program at 7. This isfor all Justice Ministry Network members. Come andcelebrate justice and kick off the investment drive. Bea part of the great work we do in Lexington.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2016

Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary Church invites all children of the Parish (from age 3 to children who will be completing 5th grade) to "DEEP SEA DISCOVERY" VBS, a Spirit-filled under the sea adventure, where everyone is sure to have a Fin-tastic time!

This year's underwater theme promises to be the coolest one ever! It's bubbling with excitement for kids, teens, and adults. Everyone involved in this VBS will dive right into God's Holy Word with both flippers on... and will never be the same again! As kids and volunteers venture into the deep, they learn "God is with me and will watch over me wherever I go!" (Gen 28:15).

Each day they will hear a different Bible story taken from the Old and New Testaments, and they'll discover that God KNOWS me - God knows Noah's heart. (Genesis 6-9) God HEARS me - God hears Jonah pray. (Jonah 1-3) God STRENGTHENS me - Jesus strengthens Peter in the storm. (Matthew 14) God LOVES me - Jesus loves the disciples - and everyone! (John 21) God SENDS me - God sends Paul to tell His story. (Acts 13 & 14)

HEALTH MINISTRY

If you are drinking too much, you can improve your health by cutting back or quitting. Here are some strategies to help you cut back or stop drinking:

• Limit your drinking to no more than 1 drink a day for women or 2 drinks a day for men.

• Keep track of how much you drink. • Choose a day each week when you will not drink. • Don’t drink when you are upset. • Avoid places where people drink a lot. • Make a list of reasons not to drink.

If you are concerned about someone else’s drinking, offer to help.

FACTS ABOUT ALCOHOL

• 88,000 deaths are annually attributed to excessive alcohol use!

• Alcoholism is the 3rd leading lifestyle-related cause of death in the nation

• Excessive alcohol use is responsible for 2.5 million years of potential life lost annually, or an average of about 30 years of potential life lost for each death

• Up to 40% of all hospital beds in the United States (except for those being used by maternity and intensive care patients) are being used to treat health conditions that are related to alcohol consumption

• Drinking alcohol increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, esophagus, pharynx, larynx, liver, and breast

!

ALCOHOLISM Alcoholism has little to do with what kind of alcohol one drinks, how long one has been drinking, or even exactly how much alcohol one consumes. But it has a great deal to do with a person's uncontrollable need for alcohol. Most alcoholics can't just "use a little willpower" to stop drinking. The alcoholic is frequently in the grip of a powerful craving for alcohol, a need that can feel as strong as the need for food or water. While some people are able to recover without help, the majority of alcoholics need outside assistance to recover from their disease. Yet, with support and treatment, many are able to stop drinking and reclaim their lives.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME? I watch people around me drink the same way I do but they don’t get wasted like me. There must be a trick, some secret or learned way of drinking that I haven’t figured out yet, but I will. I’ll try beer instead of vodka. I’ll try eating more before I drink. I’ll find a way—there must be a way. It’s not like I’m a drunk or something! I’ve never lost a job, I’ve never gotten a DUI, I never drink in the morning. If I was an alcoholic, I wouldn’t be able to say that. This is simply a matter of getting a grip on drinking, figuring out the way to do it. Welcome to one of the many scripts that ran through my head before I got sober. They varied a bit here and there, but they all led to the same conclusion—I could not accept that I was an alcoholic. I was diligent and smart enough to accomplish many other achievements, so I thought it was just a matter of time before I figured out how I could keep drinking. Well, it was a matter of time. My drinking became dangerous and destructive. All the things I told myself in the scripts couldn’t stand up to the mess I had created. I ran out of people to blame and I ran out of new ideas for my “strategy.” I had tried everything within myself but I never asked for help. When I finally asked for help, I found the way. And I haven’t had a drink since. V., Age 32
