Surname: Rice
Recorded as Rice, Ryce, Rhys, Reasce, Reece, Rees and Reese, this is regarded as a Welsh surname but is equally English. It originates from the pre 7th century Olde English personal name Ris or Rhys, meaning "ardour or sometimes "fiery warrior". The name first appears as "Hris" in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles for the county of Cambridgeshire, in the year 1052, and as Rees in the Domesday Book of Cheshire, dated 1086. It was also the name borne by the last ruler of an independent Kingdom of Wales, Rhys ap Tewder, who died in 1093, after unsuccessfully opposing the Norman advance.
The surname was first recorded at the beginning of the 13th Century (see below), and other early recordings include: John Rees, who appeared in the 1288 Fine Court Rolls of Suffolk, and Walter Rys, who was recorded in the Subsidy Rolls of Worcestershire, dated 1327. In 1536, Richard Rice or Price was the abbot of Conway in Wales, John Ryce appears in the Hearth Tax rolls of Suffolk in 1524, whilst on August 29th 1591, Griphin Rice and Agnes Careless were married at St. Margaret's Church, Westminster. An interesting namebearer was Edmund Ignatius Rice (1762 - 1844), who founded the (Irish) Christian Brothers Order in County Waterford in 1808.
A coat of arms of the family has the blazon of a silver shield charged with an erminois chevron cotised black between three ravens. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Res. This was dated 1203, in the Pipe Rolls of Lincolnshire, during the reign of King John of England, 1199 - 1216. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Surname: King
This ancient and distinguished surname belongs to that sizeable group of European urnames that were gradually created from the habitual use of nicknames. These nicknames were given with reference to a variety of personal characteristics, such as physical attributes or peculiarities, mental and moral characteristics, and to habits of dress and behaviour.
The derivation, in this instance, is from the Middle English "king", ultimately from the Olde English pre 7th Century "cyning", king, used to denote someone who conducted himself in a kingly manner; one who had played the part of a king in a medieval pageant, or perhaps won the title in some contest.
This surname has the rare distinction of being recorded prior to the Domesday Book of 1086 (see below). Further early recordings from England and Scotland include: Geoffrey King (Cambridgeshire, 1177); Wuluricus le King (Suffolk, 1182); and Robertus dictus King (Aberdeenshire, 1247).
When found in Ireland, the surname may be either of English origin, introduced following the Anglo‐Norman invasion of 1170, or of Gaelic derivation. In the latter case, King is an Anglicized form of the Old Gaelic "O'Cionga" or "O'Cingeadh" (first Anglicized O'Kinga), a family which in medieval times were seated on the Island of Inismor in Lough Ree. Robert King, second Earl of Kingston (1754 ‐ 1799), was M.P. for County Cork in 1783, 1790 and 1798.
The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Aelwine se Cyng, which was dated 1050, in the "Old English Byname Register", Devonshire, during the reign of Edward the Confessor, a Saxon, 1042 ‐ 1066.
Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

It was part of the abbey complex and originally was one of three large churches in the town (the others being St. James, now St. Edmundsbury Cathedral, and St. Margaret's, now gone).
Surname: Frost
This ancient name found in the spellings of Forst and Frost, is of Anglo‐Saxon origin, and has the unusual distinction of being recorded as a surname as early as 1086 (in the Domesday Book), and also of having retained its original forms through the millenium since.
The name derives from the Olde English pre 7th Century "frost or forst", and it is claimed was used as a nickname for one who had white hair or a white beard, or who was of 'frosty' disposition. These are the 'accepted' academic theories amongst those in the ivory towers of education, however logic suggests the opposite. We believe from our experience that 'Frost or Forst' had a quite different meaning, and was a baptismal name applied to one born in the times of frost, generally autumn.
It is obvious that the name was considered complimentary, or it would not have survived, and this is confirmed by its paramount position amongst the earliest of all surnames. The very early recordings include Lefstan Frost in the Feudal Documents of the Abbey of Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, in 1095, and Gilbert Frost of Warwick in the 1195 pipe rolls.
Later examples include John Frost of Cambridge (1626 ‐ 1667), a puritan divine and associate of Oliver Cromwell.
Thomas Frost aged 28 yrs, who was one of the very earliest settlers in the New World Colonies, leaving London on the ship "John" in October 1635 bound for St Christopher in the West Indies.
The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of William Forst, which was dated 1086, in the Domesday Book of Hampshire, during the reign of King William I, known as "The Conqueror", 1066 ‐ 1087.
Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Nonetheless, by correlating names and dates, we have been able to sort out the children of these two JOhns, except for a John baptized on 22 April 1561 (Johannes filis Johannis Frost bapt fuit". To give the reader an opportunity to judge how correct this sorting out is, I ahve provided pertinetn extracts from teh original Latin entries in teh parish registers, in the lists of children for both John's. To this material should be added this quotation fro m the will of an unplaced Elizabeth Frost of Glemsford, widow, dated 5 Jan 1558/9 and proved on 30 June 1559. In it she names her sons Thomas, Edward, and Benjamin and wills "that all my goods before bequethed be equalie divided by the discretion of my two brothers [in law?] olde John and yonge John". What became of olde John does not appear, nor do we find evidence to decide which of them was the John Frost named int eh 1568 subsidy list of Glemsford when he was taxed 4s. 2d. on "65 in goodes". (Suffolk Green Books No. XII p. 17.)

John Frost was born in 1532 at Glemsford, co Suffolk, England.1 He was the son of William Frost and Philippa (?). John Frost married Ann Scott, daughter of Richard Scott and Joanna (?), on 29 January 1558 at Glemsford, co Suffolk, England.3 John Frost was buried on 9 February 1609/10 at Hartest, co Suffolk, England.3 John Frost was John Frost of Glemsford and Hartest, Co. of Suffolk, styled variously 'my yonger sonne John,' 'yonge John,' 'John Frost Junior,' and John Frost Senior.' When differentiation is necessary below, he is called 'yonge John: (to distinguish him from an older brother by the same name)...The wills of both 'yonge' John Frost and Richard Scott plainly place them in the manufacture of woolen cloth, England's principal industry of the day; they were, more precisely, middle men who bought the wool, commissioned the shearing, spinning and weaving (all of which were done in private households) and then arranged the sale of the finished product. He resided after 1588 at Hartest, co Suffolk, England, in later life, probably between 24 Jan 1584/5, when his daughter Elizabeth was baptized at Glemsford, and 30 July 1588, when his first wife was buried at Hartest, 'younge John' Frost moved some five miles to the latter parish, where he died in 1610. He left a will on 6 February 1609/10 at Glemsford, co Suffolk, England,, which was proved at the Archdeaconry Court of Sudbury 9 March 1609/10. The will named wife Ellyne, sons John, Francis, Edward; daughter Elizabeth, wife of William Pratt; daughter Ales, wife of John Hayward.4,5
