Mary Star Parish

Rector’s MessageRev. Nicholas Tacito, O.PraemDear Parents, Students and Friends,

Soon the holy season of Lent will be upon us. This penitential season is a good time to start thinking more seriously about our spiritual lives and how we can better our response to God’s call to a conversion of our ways.

Lent is a time the Church sets aside for all Christians to practice penance. From the earliest times the Church has insisted above all on three forms: fasting, prayer and almsgiving, which express our conversion in relation to oneself, to God, and to others and is a powerful means of obtaining forgiveness of sins.

As we focus our efforts upon our conversion towards a greater love of God, we must not forget the necessity of reconciliation with our neighbor. In order to love God, we must love our neighbor. Lent is a most appropriate time to make amends with those whom we may have offended. The practice of charity, especially towards those we find difficult, “covers a multitude of sins (1 Pet. 4:8).” When praying the Our Father let us be sincere when we say, “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us (Mt 6:12).” Remember we are asking God to forgive us in proportion to how we have forgiven our neighbor.

Another way we can show our love for others is by setting a good example in our actions. As the saying goes, “actions are worth a thousand words.” The kindness we show to those who are less fortunate, the patience we show toward those we find difficult, standing up for what is right, saying no to what offends God, helps teach others in a practical way what it means to be a Christian. By practicing what we preach, we help others see that the possibility of experiencing God’s love is real, since they have experienced it through our actions.

It is my prayer that each of us enters this Lenten season with a true penitential spirit as we continue to strive for a deeper relationship with God and one another. May God fill your hearts with His love and peace.

Dear Parents, Guardians and Friends,

The second semester is in full swing as we approach our first Progress Report and Parent Teacher Conference this month. It is important that all students focus on their academics – especially seniors who may be feeling a little senioritis! Now’s the time to remain vigilant about your grades! Please check your PowerSchool account on Monday, February 5 for the progress report and mark your calendar as a date with teachers on Wednesday, February 7 starting at 6:30 p.m.

February is an exciting month for Mary Star. February 4, our Academic Decathlon will participate in the second competition at Alemany High School. Our good wishes for success go with them – they have worked very hard and their efforts should pay off with high scores.

A Mary Star tradition is our annual Career Day, held this year on February 2. On this day, we welcome parents, friends and alums of Mary Star, who come to school to share information about their professions – preparation, skills, responsibilities, earnings potential and more. Both our students and our presenters enjoy this special day.

We start the Lenten Season this month with a Mass celebrating Ash Wednesday on February 14. This is a day of Fasting and Abstinence. Our student body will host Stations of the Cross every Friday after school as an offering during Lent. There is also daily Mass at 7:10 a.m. in the gymnasium. Please encourage your student to join us for these spiritual exercises as we prepare for the great feast of Easter. May this season be a time of grace for all of us.

Please check the school calendar this month and take note of the items that require an early dismissal (Feb. 2, Feb. 5 and Feb. 26) and a Presidents’ Day Holiday (Feb. 19). Happy St. Valentine’s Day and have you a holy Lenten Season!

One Life LA was an incredible experience that over 100 Mary Star students and several dedicated faculty members participated in. Over 15,000 pro lifers from across the LA area marched under the theme, "Made for Greater," as we must pursue our call to greatness by celebrating, protecting, and embracing the beauty and dignity of all human life. Live music performances along with personal witness talks kickstarted the march. Mary Star students were able to proudly walk near the front, holding posters with such messages as "Pray to End Abortion," "Made for Greater" and "Peace Begins in the Womb." Banners of Our Blessed Mother and Jesus Christ billowed in the wind

and served as a visible reminder that God is on our side and in the end He will prevail. It was so awesome to march through the streets of Downtown LA surrounded by a sea of God's witnesses that shine the light of life into this dark world. The walk concluded at the LA State Historic Park, where excellent speakers and food trucks awaited us. The speakers ranged from our wonderful Archbishop Gomez to Karen Gaffney who has Down Syndrome but founded a nonprofit that works for full inclusion of those with disabilities into their communities, to well known actress Patricia Heaton, who has starred in Everybody Loves Raymond, The Middle, and Mom's Night Out, and is a passionate pro lifer and Catholic living out her faith in Hollywood. It was such a blessing that Mary Star students were given this opportunity and we can not wait for more Mary Star students to join us next year! We march because abortion stops one heart and breaks another. We march because adoption is the loving option. We march because we are the pro life generation.

Catholic Wisdom

Hear Mass daily; it will

prosper the whole day.

All your duties will be

performed the better

for it, and your soul will

be stronger to bear its

daily cross. The Mass

is the most holy act of

religion; you can do

nothing that can give

greater glory to God or

be more profitable for

your soul than to hear

Mass both frequently

and devoutly. It is the

favorite devotion of the

saints.

Heavenly Humor

A guy joins a monastery

and takes a vow of

silence. He’s allowed to

say two words every 7

years. After the first 7

years, the elders bring

him in and ask him for

his 2 words.

“Cold floors,” he

says. They nod and

send him away.

7 more years pass

and they bring him in

for his 2 words.

He clears his throat

and say, “Bad food.”

They nod and send him

away.

7 more years pass

and they bring him in

for his 2 words.

“I quit,” he says.

“That’s not

surprising,” the elders

say. “You’ve done

nothing but complain

since you got here.”

The ASB kicked off the annual Star Cup Tournament this year as soon as we returned from Christmas vacation. Seven teams will participate in a Round Robin style tournament where 4 on 4 players will compete on a shorter field. Tournament began on January 17th and will continue to play through February. We’re happy to see some of our teams return and new students participate in this fun activity during lunch time.

PSAT RESULTSAcademic counselors provided October PSAT score results to sophomore and junior students in January. Students and parents should review the contents of the PSAT report and follow up on the College Board website for individualized practice problems to help your student prepare for the SAT. Each student’s online access code is on the bottom left corner of PSAT report.

ACADEMIC RECOGNITION ASSEMBLYOur second Academic Recognition Assembly of the school year was held last month and over 300 students were honored. Principal’s Honor Role, Honor Role, and the Blue and Gold Achievement recipients as well as California Scholarship Federation received certificates, along with refreshments. Congratulations to all our honorees for their hard work during 1st semester! Keep up the effort throughout this second semester as well.

SENIOR INFORMATIONFinancial Aid – be sure to apply for college financial aid through the online FAFSA before March 2nd to meet the California deadline. (Note: MSHS submits GPA verifications electronically with the California Student Aid Commission; you DO NOT need to request or file a separate paper GPA verification.) The FAFSA is a free application available at https://fafsa.ed.gov/.

Scholarship Opportunities - Students – especially seniors – should be sure to apply for any scholarships for which they qualify. Local scholarships generally become available in the first few months of the year. Also, check with the financial aid offices of the colleges of your choice for their scholarship offerings and remember that many employers offer scholarships for employees’ dependents.

Test Scores/Mid-Year Reports – Seniors will need to submit SAT/ACT scores to universities to which they have applied as well as to submit 7th semester grades to schools as needed. Request transcripts through Mrs. Phillips in the Registrar’s Office. Colleges whose applications were completed on The Common Application or use SENDEdu receive electronic transcripts from Ms. Pichler. Students do not need to request a separate midyear transcript for those schools.

Acceptance Letters – Seniors are requested to bring copies of ALL college/university acceptance letters and scholarship award letters to Ms. Pichler.

IMPORTANT FOR ALL SENIORS!Semester Grades – Did you receive a grade of D or F at semester? You are honor bound to report this deficiency, in writing, to all colleges and universities to which you have applied. They will advise you what steps need to be taken. Do this as soon as possible – do not delay! If you wait until your final transcript, your admission will likely be withdrawn. If you received any semester grade of F, you are deficient credits toward graduation. Credits must be made up in order to receive your Mary Star diploma. See Ms. Pichler regarding any questions you may have.

JUNIOR NEWSCollege planning time is here! Juniors received a wealth of college preparation information and resources when PSAT scores were distributed in January. Take advantage of school holidays to visit local campuses and, if possible, use some Easter break time to schedule longer college visit trips. Juniors should register for the SAT Reasoning Test or ACT Test this May/June. Don’t delay registering as the spring dates at local sites fill early. Go to www.collegeboard.com for registration information and deadlines or see Ms. Pichler for help. Some students take the ACT in addition to or instead of SAT; most colleges now accept either test. Access ACT information at www.actstudent.org or see Ms. Pichler.

UC TEST REQUIREMENTSIf you are planning to apply to UC schools in the fall, you are no longer required to take two SAT subject areas tests; however, the tests may be recommended for some majors. You will need to check the UC websites carefully. You may take the tests and send them to the UC campus to which you are applying and they will be used in the holistic review of your application. Confused? Questions? See Ms. Pichler.

PROGRESS REPORTS and CONFERENCE NIGHTThe next progress report Parent/Teacher Conference Night is schedule for Wednesday, February 7. If you have concerns about your student’s grade as indicated on the progress report, please take advantage of this opportunity to speak with teachers. Parents and students are encouraged to access student grades through PowerSchool on an ongoing basis.

TUTORING is available with your student’s teachers and is highly encouraged by our faculty. Please make appointments with teachers.

COUNSELERS – Dr. Dever, Grade 9; Mr. Mendoza, Grade 10; Ms. Pichler, Grades 11 and 12.

Campus Ministry Kelsey Kavanaugh – Junior

Happy New Year from the campus ministry team! This month of January our student body had the opportunity to grow together in faith and community. After returning from an invigorating Christmas break, we celebrated Benediction and Adoration as a school. The junior class then participated in their day of prayer, led by the National Evangelization Team. This retreat was an opportunity for the juniors to come into a deeper faith with both God and each other. It was truly a privilege to be led by the inspiring young men and women from NET. This month, we also appreciated our school with Catholic Schools week. Students were celebrated with donuts, the faculty with a luncheon, and parents with treats delivered to their cars. This month, let us thank God for Catholic schools and the impact they have on communities and students around the world.

MARY STAR HIGH SCHOOL Now Accepting Applications For 2018-2019

Shining StarsMSHS Students Shine in Speech Competition

On Thursday, January 18, 2018, the Rotary Club of San Pedro held their annual Rotary High School Student Speech Contest. Students were asked to choose a challenge within the nation, state, community, school, family or self and write a 4 to 6 minute speech that includes the 2017-2018 Rotary Theme of Making A Difference. Two students from Mary Star - Kelsey Kavanaugh and Jacob Velez - competed against other students in the San Pedro area, being judged by Rotarians and Toastmasters. Jacob's speech on grief reflected on his own personal loss and battle with grief, explaining how he has grown from this experience and found a deeper appreciation for compassion. Kelsey's speech reflected on her experience with the 2015 Special Olympics and the

lasting impact the athletes had on her life. As a result of their inspiring speeches, Kelsey and Jacob both took home cash prizes, placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Congratulations to our two students and thank you for representing Mary Star.

MSHS Teacher Picked from Nationwide SearchFor the third consecutive year, our very own Ivett Romo Verdín has been chosen to evaluate the National Advanced Placement Spanish Exams. She will be attending the 2018 AP Reading (College Board Advanced Placement Program) in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ms. Verdín will join forces with AP Spanish Language and Culture teachers as well as college faculty who teach Spanish to score approximately 168,307 exams. The careful evaluation of students’ work by Ms. Verdin and other highly qualified professionals is one of the most important aspects of the AP Program. A huge part of the AP Program’s success is due to an evaluation and scoring process

that reflects the high standards of AP Readers who, by virtue of their experience and expertise, have appropriate student performance expectations within their respective disciplines. Congratulations Ms. Verdín!

Congratulations to Mary Star Freshman Matthew Morreale who earned “Best in the State” of California for his level 9 piano testing and performance assessment in the Royal Conservatory Music Development Program. Because of this achievement, he was invited to perform at USC at the annual Festival of Excellence on January 13, 2018, with other high achieving musicians. This is his second appearance at this honored event. In 2015 Matthew earned a Gold medal for Best in the Nation in piano as part of the Royal Conservatory Music
