Pastor’s Corner Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners: Recently I came across this interesting interview with Cardinal Luca Signorelli the Rector of the Saint John Paul II institute for the Studies on Marriage and the Family in Rome. Sister Lucia wrote to him before her death about the battle for the family in our times. I hope you find it interesting and helpful. Have a Blessed week. Fr. A Cardinal tells: Sister Lucia wrote me… On Feburary 16, 2008, Cardinal Carlo Caffara (Archbishop of Bologna), after a Mass celebrated at the tomb of St. Pio of Pietrelcina, granted an interview to Tele Radio Padre Pio, which was subsequently reported in the monthly magazine “Voce di Padre Pio” March, 2008 . Here are some significant excerpts. Q. Your Eminence, recently in Corriere della Sera you said that you had always had a great devotion to Padre Pio. Please tell us why. I have had great devotion to him since the beginning of my priesthood as a result of a rather unique experience. I had been a priest for some months and a brother-priest came to see me. He was quite a bit older than me and was going through a serious crisis of faith. It is difficult to describe what a crisis of faith is for a priest: a terrible thing! I told him “Brother, I’m too little, and sense that I can’t carry such a burden. Go to Padre Pio.” So he went, and while he was talking to Padre he had a great mystical experience, touched profoundly by the mercy of God. Now he is one of the best priests I know. There you have it, it all began like that. Q. Did you ever meet Padre Pio personally? No, I didn’t. I never had the courage to go to him, thinking that I would be wasting his time! […] I retain that Padre Pio belongs to the series of great mystics who have this characteristic: the most profound sharing in the Cross of Christ, as they carry upon themselves the great tragedy of mankind today – atheism. Padre Pio, St. Gemma Galgani, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross , Mother Theresa, the Curé d'Ars all had the experience of sitting round the table with sinners, living their experiences, of carrying, in a different way, the weight of the Agony in Gethsemane; they testified to the love of Christ Who takes upon Himself, the pain of the man who has left his Father’s house and doesn’t want to go back, even if he knows in his heart that he is better off in his Father’s house rather than tending to pigs. Man today continues to imagine that he can live as if God didn’t exist; and we see the devastation this has caused.

Q. There is a prophecy by Sister Lucia dos Santos, of Fatima, which concerns “the final battle between the Lord and the kingdom of Satan”. The battlefield is the family. Life and the family. We know that you were given charge by John Paul II to plan and establish the Pontifical Institute for the Studies on Marriage and the Family. Yes, I was. At the start of this work entrusted to me by the Servant of God John Paul II, I wrote to Sister Lucia of Fatima through her Bishop as I couldn’t do so directly. Unexplainably however, since I didn’t expect an answer, seeing that I had only asked for prayers, I received a very long letter with her signature – now in the Institute’s archives. In it we find written: the final battle between the Lord and the reign of Satan will be about marriage and the family. Don’t be afraid, she added, because anyone who operates for the sanctity of marriage and the family will always be contended and opposed in every way, because this is the decisive issue. And then she concluded: however, Our Lady has already crushed its head. Talking also to John Paul II, you felt too that this was the crux, as it touches the very pillar of creation, the truth of the relationship between man and woman among the generations. If the founding pillar is touched the entire building collapses and we see this now, because we are at this point and we know it. And I’m moved when I read the best biographies of Padre Pio , on how this man was so attentive to the sanctity of marriage and the sanctity of the spouses, even with justifiable rigor on occasion.

Keeping Our Commitments In the musical Fiddler on the Roof, the husband, Tevye, whose marriage was arranged years and years before, wants to know if his wife really loves him. Was their marriage just an arrangement, a deal? Did his wife, after all these years, ever love him? Does she still? We need to know if our loving commitments stick. We need to be reminded and reaffirmed. In the first reading, Joshua, Moses’ successor, needed to know if the people would remain faithful to their covenant with the Lord. Joshua was going to lead them to a new life—a settled life. Would they be faithful? Jesus, who identified himself as the very life of his disciples’ life, needed to know: Will you also go away or will you stay? We do not often see Jesus this vulnerable. Decisions. Life is filled with them. Decisions are presented in the first reading and Gospel proclaimed today. The Israelites are asked to choose whether or not they will continue to serve the Lord, the God of Israel. In voicing their choice to continue serving the Lord, they call to mind all the wonderful things that God had done for them. The disciples in today’s Gospel reading are also faced with a choice. Many choose to turn away from Jesus because his invitation to eat his body and drink his blood is too hard a saying. Peter and the Twelve, when asked if they, too, would abandon Jesus respond, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.” We, in a way, repeat these words every time we come to Mass, for in fact there is nowhere else we can go to be fed by the body and blood of the Lord and hear words that will bring us eternal life. Remembering all the wonderful things that God has done for us, we choose to come to Mass to give thanks and praise to God.

Back to school: carpool safety Beginning a new school year can mean starting up a new carpool – trading rides to and from sports and after-school activities with other parents. Teach your children that they should never get into a car with someone they don’t know. They should also have a parent’s permission before they accept a ride with someone they do know. If you do have to send someone to pick up your kids, establish a family code word. If the driver gives your children the code word, they know that it’s safe to get in the car. Please join our Families of Nazareth group as they search for a deeper relationship with God by developing your “interior” life and understanding the Blessed Mother’s role in your faith journey. Our group meets in the Msgr. Gallagher Parish Center Chapel on Saturday mornings from 9 am - 10 am. They will begin after the summer break on September 12th to pray and share faith journeys. Adults only please.

BAPTISMS We welcome infants and young children to the Sacrament of Baptism. Visit the parish office for a Baptism Information package and to schedule an appointment. We ask parents, when coming to register for infant Baptism, to please bring the baby’s birth certificate. Religious Education Program (Pre-k/K - 8th Grade) The Religious Education program offers ongoing faith formation for all grades . We also prepare children to receive the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Our RCIA program adapted for children who have not been baptized prepares children who are older than seven for the sacraments of initiation - Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. You may call the office to request a registration form or download one. Classes will begin on Wednesday September 16 and on Saturday September 19, 2015. Space is limited so register early. The ministry of permanent deacons has become an essential part of our parish life today, yet for centuries until 1967, this deeply traditional ministry had virtually disappeared. Every priest had first to be ordained a deacon, but the notion that one could actually embrace a permanent vocation to the diaconate was lost. The primary ministry of the deacon is to the welfare of the community, especially its poor, and his role in sacraments and preaching flows from that. His principal role is to animate and promote the ministry of all the faithful. Ninety percent of permanent deacons are married, although the discipline of celibacy for clerics means that if a deacon is widowed, normally he cannot remarry, nor can an unmarried deacon marry once ordained. The deacon does not preside at Mass nor may he absolve sins. Nor, since anointing of the sick is linked theologically to penance, may he anoint. Sometimes we are slow to engage with a tradition: Trent approved permanent deacons in the 1560s, but nothing was done until the 1960s. The vitality of the long-delayed restoration has greatly enriched the Church, particularly in the United States, where the majority of the deacons in the world serve.
