WEIGHT

Is your pet carrying too much weight? Leaner pets tendto be healthier and have fewer diseases. However, obesitycan lead to diseases such as diabetes, arthritis, and heartconditions among others.1,2,3,4,5 In addition, that addedweight could be aggravating already sore joints andpotentially causing further damage. If your dog is toolarge to weigh at home, most veterinarians will allowclients to come in and check their pets’ weight without an appointment or fee.

EARS

Looking down into your pet’s ears—they should be clean andpale pink (or skin colored depending on breed and coatcolor). There should be no brown/black/waxy build-up.The ears should also be odor-free. Chronic ear goo couldbe another sign of allergies and you may want to considerupgrading the diet or adding a supplement containing anatural antihistamine such as bee pollen or spirulina(Longevity™, Fresh Factors™, etc.).

BODY CONDITION

Does your pet have a waist? Most people don’t think about it,but your pet should have an hourglass figure. Stand over yourdog and look down. If your dog’s waist doesn’t narrow at leasta little bit before the hips, he/she may be carrying extrapounds. Now we look at the pet from the side—does his/herbelly start to “tuck” behind the rib cage? You should be able tofeel—but not see—your pet’s ribs. If your beloved furry friendis “barrel” shaped, then it may be time to put the treats away.Please remember—you’re the one in control of filling the foodbowl, your pet is only in control of emptying it.

SKIN AppEARANCE & ITCHING

Itchy skin can be caused by a variety of factors. The first step isto ensure that your pet does not have fleas. By using a simpleflea comb and running it through your dog’s fur, you can checkfor fleas or “flea dirt.” It’s important to get the comb down to theskin as you brush it through, checking for tiny fleas or bits ofblack flea dirt. If you find either of these, a bath and daily Bug Off Garlic would be in order. Changing/cleaning the bedding would also be helpful.

If you don’t find anything, it is possible your pet is sufferingfrom allergies or simply dry skin. When you part your pet’s furand examine the skin underneath, the skin should be relativelypink (or comparable color, depending on coat color) and even-toned without any redness, bumps, flakes,or patches of moisture. You can take a good sniff while you’re at the skin level – does it smell like “dog”or do you smell a yeasty or infection-type smell? These are further signs of allergies, and you mightwant to evaluate your pet’s diet and perhaps consider upgrading. Allergy symptoms can also be alleviatedby adding either Fresh Factors™ or Longevity™ to your pet’s meals. When fed daily, the all-naturalantihistamines in these two products provide lasting relief against inflamed, irritated skin. For dry,itchy skin, consider adding Omega 3-6-9™ or Skin & Coat to the diet. Watch as the dry, itchy skinrepairs itself and your pet’s coat shines with a new luster. STOOl AppEARANCE

Stool appearance and consistency are important signsof your pet’s overall health. Your pet’s stools shouldbe solid and formed but not hard. Coloring will varydepending on what is being fed (if a variety goes in, a variety will come out). You do not want overly softstools. Also keep an eye open for parasites. Regularstool sample checks by your veterinarian will ensureyour pet remains worm-free.

In my opinion, it is extremely unlikely thatany dog would ever voluntarily eat the amountof raw garlic necessary to reach the minimumtoxic dose. Most natural veterinarians who recommend feeding raw garlic stay well under10% of that amount.

A Scientific Overview of Chondroitin SulfateChondroitin sulfate provides powerful

natural support for joints and skin.

Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a naturallyoccurring molecule found in the cartilageand connective tissues of people and ani-

mals. Chondroitin is the substance that enables car-tilage to provide cushion to healthy joints, and it’swhat the body uses to make new cartilage.Chondroitin also serves a vital role in the mainte-nance of healthy skin/coat. Chondroitin can betaken as a supplement for cartilage maintenance,joint lubrication, healthy skin/coat, and as an anti-inflammatory. It is an effective treatment for arthri-tis, particularly osteoarthritis (OA).*

Not all chondroitin is created equal

The chondroitin used in dietary supplements isextracted from the cartilage and connective tissuesof animals. The most common animal sources arecow, pig, chicken, and shark. Chondroitin variesdepending on the source, and scientists have sepa-rated it into three distinct classes: A, B, and C.This is important because chondroitin-A hasgreater health benefits than B or C, and some ani-mal sources have more chondroitin-A than others.For instance, beef trachea cartilage (used bySpringtime) has among the highest concentrationsof chondroitin-A. Conversely, some products onthe market are labeled as 100% chondroitin butcontain little to no chondroitin-A, rendering themwoefully ineffective.

The science of chondroitin

Chondroitin sulfate is one of six related substancescalled glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), which are alsoreferred to as mucopolysaccharides. Adequateamounts of chondroitin are vital for normal jointfunction and maintenance as well as many other self-healing mechanisms. The following list of activitieshave been proven in numerous scientific studies:

Osteogenesis: chondroitin-A is an impor-tant participant in bone calcification and

chondroitin-C in bone integrity maintenance.(Serni, 1991; Vacha, 1994).

Analgesic and restorative effect: A veryimportant property of chondroitin sulfate is

its ability to stimulate the chondrocite (cell thatsynthesizes the proteoglycans in the articular carti-lage), which is conducive to the proper maintenanceof the cartilage matrix. (Serni, 1991; Vacha, 1994).

Enzymatic inhibition: The capacity ofchondroitin sulfate to inhibit the action of

destructive enzymes of the articular cartilage pro-tects joints and helps maintain harmonic balance ofhealthy enzyme activity. This in turn helps avoiddegradation of hyaluronic acid, a necessary mole-cule for the maintenance of hydration and viscosityof synovial fluid. (Avila, 1976; Marossy, 1981;Pipitone, 1991; Videla Dorna et al., 1994).

No Spray for Newborn Foal!

Dear Springtime:

Since I l ive in Florida, bugs are a very big problem, and fl ies can

carry diseases. So I was a nervous wreck when my first foal,

Mugz, was born. Of course, I didn't want to have to spray my

newborn foal with fly spray, but I didn't want him to get eaten up

Dear Springtime:

I wanted to tell you about a horse named Joey whoenjoyed his final 21 months because of your prod-ucts, especially the Joint Health Formula.

My husband and I retired and moved to Texaswhere we built Forever Home Ranch, which takes in horses that have been seized by law enforcementbecause of neglect or cruelty. Joey came to us inJune at age 23, and he was about to be put downbecause he was in terrible shape. Three knees wereshot from his previous owners using him too long asa cutting horse.
