Hospitality... open your heart to another

Dear Parents/Carers and Friends of Marymount College

It is with great pleasure that I write to you as Acting Principal at Marymount College while Sara Scungio is on leave for the first part of this year. I look forward to getting to know you and the community during this time.

I hope the extended Christmas and summer holiday was a relaxing and enjoyable break from your daily routines and that you had time to reconnect and enjoy time with family and friends. Most importantly, I hope the holidays has enabled all community members to recharge their batteries and be ready for the busy school year ahead.

On behalf of the Marymount community, I wish to welcome all students, parents and staff to the new school year and especially those new to the College. It has been a delight to see the Year 6 and other students new to the College,

quickly settle into their new home groups and to develop confidence each day as they move around the buildings and grounds. The transition for these new students was strongly supported by continuing students and the great team of staff at Marymount, who have worked tirelessly in preparing learning spaces, learning programs, the grounds and facilities and the many administrative tasks that need to be done in order for the College to run smoothly.

We welcome a number of staff new to the College this year, including Keiko Neilsen (Japanese) and Michael Lewis (ESO). We also welcome back Christina Jonas (APRIM), Linda Oswald (Japanese) and Alice Dunlop (teacher) who are returning from leave.

I have been struck by the openness, friendliness and hospitality of the students and staff and have felt very welcomed

by them. The culture of any school is built by all students, staff and parents and I look forward to working with you as we continue to develop the charism of ‘hospitality’ in 2016. This year the College also celebrates its 60th Anniversary and there will be many opportunities for the community to celebrate the great achievements of the College.

This week will be a busy one for us all with Parent Welcome and Information Evening, iPad Launch sessions and the Year 9 Reflection Day on Friday. As a Catholic community we will also celebrate the beginning of the Season of Lent at our Ash Wednesday Liturgy. Ash Wednesday calls us to focus on prayer, penance and good works as an expression of love and in

service to others as we prepare for the great feast of Easter.

The staff and I look forward to meeting you at the Welcome and Information Evening this evening. This is an opportunity for you to meet staff and learn more about school practices and your daughter’s learning program. Following the information sessions all parents and carers are invited to come together and relax and enjoy each other’s company over a drink and nibbles in celebration of a new and exciting year ahead.

God Bless.

Maria CanalaPrincipal

Year Level Parent Class Representatives

Welcome to all students and families to the 2016 school year. It has been great to see everyone back again and the routines of school life beginning to take shape, as we experience a sense of energy and expectation in the weeks ahead.

Overall it seems that the girls are settling in well to their new classes. As they adjust to a new class and begin to meet new people and make new friends, it is timely to remember that it can take a while for some girls to settle into their new situation. This time of the year provides a valuable time for the girls to develop their skills of resilience and the chance to remain hopeful that they will get through challenges with the support of those people in their lives.

As part of supporting the girls’ physical and mental wellbeing at school, you are probably aware that they are able to bring some ‘brain food’ to school which can be eaten at designated times, in class in the morning. As a school, we follow healthy eating guidelines as closely as we can. In your selection of brain food, it needs to include those foods that are typically fresh and minimally processed. These are foods that fall within the ‘green’ category. Some examples of

foods that would be suitable for brain foods include:• Yoghurt - plain or flavoured (reduced

fat if possible)• Fruit - fresh and canned• Seeds eg pumpkin, sunflower• Plain popcorn• Cheese• Fruit bars • Rice crackers• Vegetable sticks

Our first whole school assembly will be held in the Polding Centre on Tuesday 23 February at 10:10am. Parents and Carers are always welcome!

You will find below, two parenting articles from Michael Grose, a well-known author and presenter of parenting information. Every newsletter we will attach article/s for your reference and enjoyment.

I would like to thank all those girls, who are supported by their families in visibly demonstrating pride in themselves and our College by their correct presentation in the school uniform.

Michael Grose articles this week: Creating good study and work habits in secondary school - here are seven healthy and strong study habits that will serve your young person well throughout their school years and lives. Instilling confidence takes more than heaping praise on kids. Here are 10 confidence-building strategies every parent and teacher should know.

My name is Carmel Briggs and I am the College Chaplain at Marymount, a role I have enjoyed for the past three years. I thought it would be helpful for you to know a little about what my role entails, and in turn, how I may be able to support you as parents and friends of our girls.

I am here to assist in offering support at times of bereavement, family breakdowns, or other crises that may arise. In collaboration with other staff members, I provide pastoral care to the Marymount College Community, and invite you to come forward if you know of any of our families who are in need.

For the past thirty years I have encouraged the practice of Christian Meditation in the classroom, and have noted the many benefits for our students. They really enjoy it, and at the same time become more focused, resilient and relaxed whilst exploring their unique spirituality and relationship with God. Times are made available in our beautiful Chapel for teachers to bring their students for Christian Meditation when appropriate.

I work in partnership with College staff to identify students who may be ‘at risk’ and help establish networks, support groups and life-skill programs for them.

I am an ongoing member of the SHAKARE group which is made up of both students and teachers, and our goal is to support and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural awareness and appreciation in the College.

Our ongoing relationship with the Minda Community is supported by a regular Church Service for the clients that Ann Christie and I conduct in partnership with Mary McKeough from the Brighton Parish. We are part of a Church Volunteer group made up of people from other denominations, and it is a most rewarding and enriching experience.

I am at Marymount on Tuesdays if you would like to drop in for a chat. Until then, I wish you and your families’ good health and happiness throughout the coming year.

WelcomeWelcome all to our 2016 school year, especially all those new to our Marymount community. Hoping everyone has returned with renewed energy and enthusiasm and the students are settling in well to new beginnings.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with questions, concerns, and clarification, about any aspect of your child’s spiritual development or any support I may give you as parents with the religious dimension of our school. I look forward to seeing you soon at the upcoming events and can be contacted by phone or email.

Our overarching school focus for 2016 is HOSPITALITY – ‘open your heart to another’. This year we will discuss and explore what this means and what this might look like for us, our community and in our lives.

What is hospitality? What does open your heart to another mean?

What does this mean to you? What are the possibilities in 2016?

Sacraments of Communion and ConfirmationStudents who have made their reconciliation that may be ready to celebrate Eucharist and Confirmation in 2016 will have information distributed very soon. Have a great fortnight!
