1.Introduction
5rom the moment I was told to choose a topic for my research
work 3arious dou%ts arose: from the continent to the content
going through the decision of which one could I a,ront and
resol3e with guarantee. )nce I took a decision I reali;ed that I
would not %e an easy task and that my decision was threatened
to %e prolonged.
It was one weekend a%out a year ago that %y chance I went
with my parents to a conference in 'arragona. 'he seminar was
o,ered in Holos a centre dedicated to inno3ati3e research of
people’s health at physical energetic emotional mental and
spiritual le3els.
(lthough a priori seemed e-tremely %oring it ended not only
impressing %ut capti3ating me in the sense of how far could go
a su%0ecti3e approach.
'hat conference was a%out the life and ndings of asaru
Emoto and 3arious theories that he claimed and I was introduced
to asaru Emoto’s conception of the importance of water in our
li3es and the in

'he same night after two long hours and endless we% pages I
decided what would %e the theme of my la%our which is none
other than asaru Emoto’s approach of water.
Besides the su%0ect I was going to work with ga3e me the
possi%ility to conduct a physical e-periment so I could o%ser3e
and analy;e the results %y myself.
onths later I think I guessed right the choice I made and hope
that after this research the su%0ect will end up raising certain

asaru Emoto was %orn on the 22nd of =uly in 19$! in >okohama =apan.
He has three children and is married to ?a;uko Emoto. He
graduated from >okohama unicipal @ni3ersityAs department of
humanities and sciences with a focus on International /elations
and later in 1992 recei3ed a title as "octor of alternati3e
medicine from the )pen International @ni3ersity for (lternati3e

reuirements. Su%seuently he was introduced to the concept of micro cluster water in the @S and agnetic /esonance (nalysis
technology. 'his uni3ersity is an unaccredited institute although
it is now the world’s leading alternati3e medicine institution with
a mem%ership count of a%out 6C.CCC practitioners.
In 198 "r. Emoto esta%lished the I.H.. #orporation in 'okyo.
He was then introduced to the concept of micro cluster water and

Emoto undertook e-tensi3e research of water around the planet
not so much as a scientic researcher %ut more from the
perspecti3e of an original thinker. (t length he reali;ed that it
was in the fro;en crystal form that water showed us its true
nature. He continues with this e-perimentation and has written a
3ariety of %ooks which most ha3e %een in =apanese as well as the
seminal essage from *ater.

Emoto’s hypothesis has e3ol3ed o3er the years of his research.
Initially "r. Emoto claimed that highGuality water forms %eautiful
and intricate crystals while lowGuality water has di7culty
forming crystals. (ccording to "r. Emoto an ice crystal of
distilled water e-hi%its a %asic he-agonal structure with no
intricate %ranching.

(. !he scienti)c method
(.1. De)nition
Scientics need to follow a
few directi3es also know as
the process for
e-perimentation used to
disco3er new things and
pro3ide answers to their
uestions. Formally they
design an e-periment already
knowing what is going to
happen which will the
reaction %e although
e-periments can %e 3ery
unpredicta%le.
(.2. %cienti)c Method’s %teps
'he scientic method relies on steps which are not always the
same as there is no one single scientic method. E3ery
e-periment is di,erent and may or may not follow the e-act
steps. 'he %asic steps to conduct an e-periment are
1. 'he rst one is the most imporant one as is the one that raises
the uestion a%out something you ha3e o%ser3ed: how when
who which why and where. ost of the uestions will %e
answered %y a num%er as it will %e easier to measure and
compare.
8/16/2019 Masaru Emoto's Water Crystals
12/131
2. Background research is the following step: gather information
and resources.
(. 'he construction of the hypothesis (fter data has %een
collected and analy;ed the scientist formulates a hypothesis. It
has to %e constructed in a way that it clearly answers the original
uestion. Formally hypotheses ha3e the form of a mathematical
model or are formulated as an e-istential statement.
*. 'he ne-t step consists in the performance of the e-periment
and collecting data o%tained from it. 'he e-periment has already%een designed in step ! as it has to %e done according to the
hypothesis to get the data needed to test whether your
hypothesis is true or false. It’s important that your e-periment is
a fair test as changing more that one factor may produce
une-pected results. )ne factor is altered during the e-periment
and all other factors are kept same. 'he e-periment must %e
repeated for the same and di,erent set of 3alues to ensure thatthe initial results were not a
8/16/2019 Masaru Emoto's Water Crystals
13/131
way to impro3e the data o%tained from the other e-periments. In
a eld where there is acti3e e-perimentation and open
communication among mem%ers of the scientic community the
%iases of indi3iduals or groups may cancel out %ecause
e-perimental tests are repeated %y di,erent scientists who may
ha3e di,erent %iases.
(n idea model or e-planation that has %een rigorously tested
analy;ed and accepted %y the scientic community is referred to
as a theory G a term used perhaps %ecause most scientists
%elie3e nothing can e3er %e pro3ed a%solutely true. 'he theorywill continue to %e an accepted e-planation unless new
information is unco3ered G information that the scientic
community agrees dispro3es the pre3ious e-planation. 'his
continuous scrutiny is essential to the credi%ility and progress of
scientic research.
'he scientic method attempts to minimi;e the in
8/16/2019 Masaru Emoto's Water Crystals
14/131
pressure to get a specic result. In that case there may %e a
psychological tendency to nd something wrong such as
systematic e,ects with data which do not support the scientistAs
e-pectations while data which do agree with those e-pectations
may not %e checked as carefully. 'he lesson is that all data must
%e handled in the same way.
(.(. &haracteristics.
'he ma0or features of the scientic method are
-/ecti0it 'he scientic method tries to o%tain knowledge
that accord with the reality of the o%0ect which descri%e or
e-plain as it is and not as we would wish it to %e. It lea3es out
the su%0ecti3e how it feels or senses.
ationa'it Science uses reason as the essential weapon to
reach its results. Scientists work with concepts 0udgments and
reasons not sensations images or impressions. 'he rationality of
science e-ists aside from religion and all systems where
elements are not rational.
In0enti0eness It is in3enti3e %ecause it reuires putting into
play the creati3ity and imagination to create pro%lems
de3eloping hypotheses resol3ing and 3erifying them. 'his means
that to e-tend our knowledge is reuired to disco3er new
truths. 'he method pro3ides rules and guidelines %ut it is not
infalli%le.
%stematic Science is systematic organi;ed in their searches
and their results. It is concerned with %uilding systems and ideas
coherently organi;ed all knowledge into more e-tensi3e partial.
'o achie3e this consistency in the 3arious sciences we turn tological operations to ensure that order or consistency. 'hese
8/16/2019 Masaru Emoto's Water Crystals
15/131
logical operations are denition classication and di3ision and
pro3iding guidelines to determine the e-act content and e-tent
of scientic knowledge.
3eri)ai'it It is the conrmation or re0ection of the
hypothesis. 'he hypothesis are 3eried or re0ected %y the
e-perimental method. Hypotheses are proposed or assumed
answers to our pro%lems and these are conrmed or restructured
according to the results presented during the e-periment.

*. Emoto’s Method.
*.1. $ow did it a'' egin4
It all started in 199$ when Emoto took samples of water from a
pure water source located in his country fro;e a few droplets
e-amined them under a dark eld electron microscope and
photographed them. )nce the photographs were re3ealed they
saw a %eautiful crystalline he-agon like a snow

for shooting glasses he and his colleagues took pictures one %y
one and stored information.
*ater is rapidly changing and
is unsta%le. Emoto and his
team put the water samples
in 1CC +etri dishes and
placed them in a free;er for
two hours. 'hey took the
crystals and put them under
the microscope to
photograph them e-tending
them from 2CC to CC times.
"istilled water selected as the %asis for the e-periments %ecause
it has a simple crystal structure and fewer impurities.
In order to o%tain a copy of an a3erage crystal they had to
photograph many water samples under as di,erent conditions as
they could imagine. 5or most people it is physically impossi%le to
stay thirty minutes in a refrigerator at degrees %elow ;ero
taking photographs.
It is impossi%le to o%tain identical images of the crystals. In other
words it is impossi%le to reproduce perfectly the same crystal
twice. Howe3er the crystals can show a trend that can make the
di,erence called crystal sheet structure. It is possi%le to identify
the crystals according to this structural trend.
'hanks to the cooperation of se3eral companies and 3olunteers
were a%le to take pictures of spring water rainwater ri3er water
lakes and wetlands around the world and =apan. In $ K years
Emoto and his team ha3e photographed and stored a%out 1C.CCC
photos.
8/16/2019 Masaru Emoto's Water Crystals
19/131
4ooking at the photograph of a crystal it was of e-treme
importance that this had a complete he-agonal
structure. (ccording to their e-perience the rupture or collapse
of the crystal structures were not a good sign in other words
you could say that his e3aluation criterion was %ased on whether
the crystals were %eautiful or not.
"uring the photo sessions the team o%ser3ed the crystalli;ation
process se3eral thousand times. )nce the crystal was formed
could see that this was %ecoming a %eautiful gure and that
these gures con3eyed a message.
'he images of crystalli;ed water may %e slightly di,erent to the
information they yield the modern scientic analysis of the water
%ecause the method assessments of progress in water samples
from a 3ery di,erent angle.
'he images of water crystals that e-press the condition of water
sample at that time and place. 'hus to carry the analysis to a
more scientic le3el Emoto wanted the crystals to %e o%ser3ed
daily from di,erent places and analy;ed %y a wider group.

( couple of years ago Emoto was introduced to a type of

the %ody at the cellular le3el. Emoto de3eloped an application for
the apparatus so that he could use it %eyond its initial intention

to his study of Hado medicine an alternati3e medical practice
that researchers started to study after ha3ing felt the limitations

(lthough ha3ing a de3ice was helpful in my study of Hadomedicine I came to %elie3e that humans are capa%le of feeling

Water Tells the Truth
An Exclusive Interview with Dr. Masaru Emoto
By Michelene K. Bell
u!lisher, In "i#ht Times
asaru Emoto was %orn in >okohama in =uly 19$!. He is a
graduate of the >okohama unicipal @ni3ersity’s department of
humanities and sciences with a focus on International /elations.
In 198 he esta%lished the IH #orporation in 'okyo. In )cto%er
of 1992 he recei3ed certication from the )pen International
@ni3ersity as a "octor of (lternati3e edicine. Su%seuently he
was introduced to the concept of micro cluster water in the @S
and agnetic /esonance (nalysis technology. 'he uest thus
%egan to disco3er the mystery of water.
He undertook e-tensi3e research of water around the planet not
so much as a scientic researcher %ut more from the perspecti3e
of an original thinker. (t length he reali;ed that it was in the
fro;en crystal form that water showed us its true nature. He has
gained worldwide acclaim through his ground%reaking research
and disco3ery that water is deeply connected to our indi3idual
and collecti3e consciousness.
He is the author of the %estGselling %ooks essages from *ater
'he Hidden essages in *ater and 'he 'rue +ower of *ater. He
is a longGtime ad3ocate for peace in relation to water. He is
currently the head of the I.H.. Jeneral /esearch Institute and

+resident Emeritus of the International *ater for 4ife 5oundation
a Fot for +rot )rgani;ation.
?B "r. Emoto you are worldGrenowned on your research with
water. *hy this eld of study and when did you start&
"r. Emoto It was 21 years ago. *hile I was playing golf with
(merican scientists my leg %egan to hurt. )ne of them ga3e mea spray %ottle of water and recommended that I spray the water
on the a,ected part of my leg. I followed his ad3ice and the pain
went away rather uickly. 'his intrigued me and was the catalyst
that sparked my interest in water.
?B +lease e-plain your method of processing&
"r. Emoto In terms of taking water crystal photos we put a
single drop of water Dour sample onto plastic +etri dishes. *e
prepare C dishes this way. 'hen they are placed in a free;er
with a temperature of G!C degrees for three hours. )ur
researcher takes out each dish from the refrigerator and then in
a cold room of degrees o%ser3es it under a microscope. (t the
appropriate timing as the water crystal de3elops our researchertakes a photograph.
?B How does uantum physics relate to you water studies&
"r. Emoto Because I am a water researcher and not a traditional
scientist I am not an authority on uantum physics. >et I ha3e
read many %ooks on the su%0ect. In uantum physics as Iunderstand it the consciousness of the o%ser3er a,ects the
8/16/2019 Masaru Emoto's Water Crystals

physical phenomenon of that which is %eing o%ser3ed. Similarly
in water crystal photography the consciousness of the o%ser3er
a,ects the outcome of the e-periments thus a,ecting the shape
of the crystals.
In this way I %elie3e uantum physicists can study the world of
uantum physics without any huge apparatus and without
incurring %ig e-penses %y simply utili;ing water crystal
technology to record the uantum e,ects of the o%ser3er.
?B *hat is magnetic resonance and how does it relate to
water&
"r. Emoto agnetic resonance deals with hydrogen atoms in
water and is a detecta%le magnetic eld. In con3entional
medicine this signal Din the water our %odies are made of can
%e manipulated %y additional magnetic elds to %uild up enough
information to construct an image of the %ody. 'hat is the %asis
for /Is. 'he same applies regarding magnetic resonance in the
waters of the world which through the conducti3ity in it allows
information to %e transmitted. It is a natural state a world of >ing
and >ang plus and minus. (ll water has this property.
?B 'hrough your research what is the most remarka%le
ndings a%out water&
"r. Emoto 'his year se3eral scientic disco3eries ha3e shown
that water has memory. ainstream science and recent
documentary lms are contri%uting in spreading this fact to the
general pu%lic. In addition I think what’s fascinating is that water
e-ists in multiple forms. 4iuid gas and solid. It is the only
su%stance that has these properties. It e-ists in many
dimensions so to speak. In the future it will %e more and more
8/16/2019 Masaru Emoto's Water Crystals
61/131
important for us to use water as a medium to e-change
information %etween di,erent dimensional states.
?B *hat do you mean when you say water has memory& (re
you saying it has intelligence&
"r. Emoto *ater has a role to carry information and I don’t think
it has intelligence. In essence water is a mirror of the human
mind. ( mirror of humanity.
?B >ou mention in L'he essage from *aterM that our words
thoughts emotions sounds music and intentional prayer can
impact water’s structure. So how do words like lo3e peace
gratitude raise the 3i%rations of water&
"r. Emoto I am certain that such words raise the 3i%rations of
water 0ust as they raise the 3i%rations of people. (fter all we are
made of water. I ha3e found that when the 3i%ration is 3ery high
a 3ery delicate form of crystal is o%ser3ed under the microscope.
'he more delicate crystal you nd the higher 3i%ration the water
contains. 'hese words carry a high 3i%ratory signature that when
com%ined with human interaction resonate at a 3ery high le3el.
?B *hat type of words cause the most dramatic changes andhow&
"r. Emoto (s I ha3e e-pressed in my studies it is the words
L4o3e and JratitudeM. 4o3e is an acti3e energy. Jratitude is a
passi3e energy. Jod created these two energies as >ing and >ang
in the %eginning when the world was created. 'herefore when
you present these 3i%rations to water water will respond in a
profound way and show you a 3ery %eautiful shape of a crystal.
8/16/2019 Masaru Emoto's Water Crystals

?B >ou speak often of prayer. How does the act of praying
e,ect water&
"r. Emoto +hysically speaking the power of prayer can %e
e-pressed as EYmc2 where E is total energy m represents the
num%er of people and c is consciousness. *hen the 3i%ration
from this com%ination %ecomes unied it is su%tle and strong. I
%elie3e there is a supersonic e,ect. It is pro3en %y some
scientists that after water is treated with supersonic wa3es of this
nature it %ecomes %etter water.
?B )nce we ha3e infused our water say a three gallon
container how long does the water remain changed&
"r. Emoto It depends on the purity of the H(") Dsu%tle energies
and how the H(") has %een infused. 5or e-ample was it a
human intention like prayer or thought or a mechanical one ormusic or a written word& It will %e di,erent in each case. 5or the
most part water retains the 3i%ration. Howe3er it is %etter to
repeat it for ma-imum retention of H(") energy.
?B *hat happens if we ha3e no thoughts a%out the water we
drink& *here does it t on the scale of %enets&
"r. Emoto )n a scale of 1 to 1C the %enets %egin when you
focus your thoughts towards the water. 'he greater your
intention the higher the %enet is. Fo thoughts %eing C in added
%enets and pure sel

"r. Emoto Imagine a lunch%o- lled with grapes. 'hen imagine
another lunch%o- lled with grains of rice. In which lunch%o- is
the conducti3ity higher& It is the one with rice %ecause it is
packed more densely. /egarding water it is water with a higher
conducti3ity in other words water in which information is
transmitted. 'his means that theoretically water with smaller
clusters is %etter water.
?B *hat words are associated with smaller clusters 3s. larger
clusters&
"r. Emoto Fegati3e phrases and words will create large clusters
while lo3ing positi3e words and phrases will form %eautiful
crystal clusters. Slang phrases such as Lyou foolM can destroy the
process of clusters forming.
?B "r. Emoto there is contro3ersy a%out distilled water. (rethere %enets from drinking distilled water&
"r. Emoto +ure distilled water will wash away essential minerals
from the %ody and so it might not %e a good idea to drink only
pure distilled water. >et we ha3e found that distilled water will
accept information more easily. So distilled water with
information which is sometimes called functional water in =apan
not called distilled water anymore can %e a 3ery good water.
?B I %elie3e some of your research included working with
stagnant water. *hat results did you nd and what types of
water did you test&
"r. Emoto +olluted water is of course stagnant water. In
nature water comes from a source and
8/16/2019 Masaru Emoto's Water Crystals
65/131
ri3er water passes through upstream midstream and
downstream on its way to the ocean. *hen water comes to our
homes the water might %e from a dam at a ri3er or a reser3oir
where it is no longer
8/16/2019 Masaru Emoto's Water Crystals
66/131
?B 'here ha3e %een cases when people drink too much water.
Society ad3ocates eight glasses a day. Is this enough and what
happens if your %ody cannot process that much water&
"r. Emoto It might %e dependent on the si;e of the glass. If the
3olume is 2CC ml then 8 glasses is 1. litres. In this case 8 to 1C
glasses are standard and good. If there is too much water in your
%ody then there might %e swelling and o3er hydration. If your
%ody cannot process the water it means that the kidneys cannot
process the water either. In this case the kidneys are not
functioning well and you may need to undergo articial dialysis.
So take good care of your kidneys and drink the appropriate
amount of water for your %ody type.
?B >ou speak of the messages hidden in water are Ltelling us
to look inside oursel3es.M How did you determine this&
"r. Emoto 'he hidden message is actually L4o3e and JratitudeM.
I came to this conclusion %ecause the water that was presented
with the words L4o3e and JratitudeM showed the most %eautiful
crystals time and time again. I started to contemplate this 3ery
deeply. *hat was it a%out 4o3e and Jratitude& I reali;ed that
these two energies ha3e the most healing and transformati3e
properties. If we look deeper inside oursel3es we would %e a%le
to see where 4o3e and Jratitude could transform us and our
world.
?B "oes water impact our spiritual li3es and how&
"r. Emoto I %elie3e that water contains the %lueprint of life
which was created %y Jod. In other words water contains the
intention of Jod and we now understand that this is the spiritual
8/16/2019 Masaru Emoto's Water Crystals

aspect of our li3es. By focusing our own intention to our water we
can reconnect with this spirituality in oursel3es.
?B "oes 0ust speaking an a7rmation or thinking a thought
a%out water change it or do we ha3e to %elie3e the water is
changed& Is it truly a%out intention&
"r. Emoto any spiritual teachers are telling us that we should
say our wishes or intentions in the past tense as if it is already
so. 'his means that it is necessary to 3isuali;e the completed
result that we are intending. (nd so yes our intention is 3ery
important.
?B Since our %odies are 6N water how can we utili;e water
to impro3e our health& Is it again %ased solely on our attitude
intentionPfaith 3isuali;ing or a7rmations&
"r. Emoto *e should gi3e our lo3e and gratitude to the food and
water that we take and then eat or drink it. *e should also do the
same to the en3ironment people and all things around us we
should gi3e our lo3e and gratitude as it will show us that
e3erything is a mirror of our thoughts %eliefs and intentions.
?B "oes a person need to know what is wrong with them inorder to %e healed& )r can they 0ust 3isuali;e or say positi3e
statements and surround themsel3es with %eautiful music and
soothing colors to alter their health&
"r. Emoto *hen you are in a 3ery unhealthy state it is
sometimes di7cult to think a%out your %ody in a healing manner.

yourself with positi3e words and so on. (lso it may %ecome

on this 3ery su%0ect.
