Brethren and Friends:

The Masonic Charity Foundation of New Jersey has, for 119 years, fulfilled a mission and a promise to Masons, their families, older adults and youth – those both within and beyond our walls.

The results of your generosity as a donor are evident in the beautiful amenities and high quality services provided to residents of the Masonic Village at Burlington and patients of Acacia Hospice. Other effects are less tangible but equally important, such as the confidence a youth gains through the Masonic Model Student Program, the closure a family feels after their loved one passes away or the relief a widow experiences upon receiving assistance through the Outreach Program.

The Outreach Program has been reinvigorated, and in 2017, provided $95,181 through the Ashlar Fund to assist 31 Masons and their families. The program also provides information and resources for those in need.

Every gift counts, no matter the size, and makes a significant difference in others’ lives. Learn more about the impact of your gifts throughout this report. Thank you for being instrumental to the good works of your Masonic Charity Foundation of New Jersey.

Sincerely and fraternally,

M.W. Dieter B. Hees R.W. Richard F. Schmidt, P.D.D.G.M.Grand Master and Chairman President, Board of Trustees Masonic Charity Foundation of NJ Masonic Charity Foundation of NJ

Living to the FullestLife is often measured in hours, days and years. Brother Robert Collier has made the most of every minute of his 87 years.

Brother Robert had 60 years, 10 months and one day with his wife, Sonia. When she passed, it was difficult, but he was surrounded by his family, friends and team members at Masonic Village who had grown to know the couple over the 18+ years they had lived and volunteered there.

Some of the faces were the same ones who were by his side when his mother died. She lived at Masonic Village for 10 years and two hours. “I enjoyed coming to visit her and volunteering here,” Brother Robert said. “The way my mother was cared for, there was not a question about whether my wife and I would come here. Every employee is respectful. They’re like family.”

Brother Robert served in the U.S. Navy, which took him as far away as the North Pole. He spent his career with Holman Enterprises, and after raising two sons and a daughter, he retired, and he and Sonia traveled the world, from the Caribbean to Australia.

As volunteers at Masonic Village, Sonia played piano for residents, and Brother Robert helped transport residents to events and programs. He also worked with the Development Office and Marketing. He’s given countless tours to residents who now call Masonic Village “home.” As evidenced by the number of residents and team members who greet Brother Robert when they pass him, he has made quite an impression on campus.

One of the biggest influences in Brother Robert’s life has been the Masonic fraternity. His grandfather, father, great uncles, uncles and many other male relatives were Masons. He saw what

Scholarship and Youth Programs To help worthy students fulfill their educational goals, the Masonic Charity Foundation sponsors seven scholarship programs. Last year, $111,000 in scholarships was distributed to 45 students pursuing degrees across all academic disciplines.

The Foundation also provided $35,000 to sponsor the Masonic Model Student Program. New Jersey educators attend this program at no cost and learn how to identify and help at-risk students.

MUSIC & MEMORYSM

Music has a special power for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Masonic Village, through the generosity of a grant, is now certified as a MUSIC & MEMORY℠ organization. This specialized training has taught activity team members how to recognize and

understand residents’ responses to music. It also has enabled team members, including Gloria Turk, music therapist, to create a Masonic Village iTunes library, efficiently manage many residents’ playlists and integrate personalized digital music into each resident’s daily care plan. Eden Alternative™ The Eden Alternative™ philosophy promotes active and caring environments which encourage self-worth, camaraderie and excitement for residents and team members. It focuses on eliminating loneliness, helplessness and boredom in older adults’ lives.

Since 2016, 175 Masonic Village team members have been trained in the Eden Alternative™ principles related to person-directed practices, improving the life of residents and their families. A generous grant from the Armour-Lewis Family Foundation funded this training.

Your Gifts at Work

they did and knew if he was going to join any social group, the Masons were it. At age 30, with the blessing of his wife, he joined the fraternity.

“I’m happy I became a Mason,” he said. “I’m grateful they came through for my wife and me when they did.

“It’s a blessing to be at Masonic Village. Coming here was the biggest and best decision my wife and I made for our future – mentally, physically, spiritually and for enjoyment. You have the comfort knowing you’re being cared for, and I emphasize cared for.”

Brother Robert has experienced his share of medical issues recently, including losing partial vision in both eyes. Inspired by his wife’s love of music, he sings in the Masonic Village choir. Music therapist Gloria Turk prints him extra-large sheet music so he is able to read it and continue participating.

Brother Robert was close with his parents, served his country, had a good marriage, raised three healthy children, saw the world and gave back to his community. He doesn’t volunteer as often, and he no longer travels the world, but his life is filled with purpose, meaning and friendship – immeasurable amounts.

“You don’t know what old age is going to be like,” he said. “To be comfortable as you age is important. Masonic Village is as happy an ending as one could wish for.”

Through Your SupportThis last year brought a tremendous amount of change and new initiatives for the Masonic Charity Foundation and Masonic Village at Burlington. These improvements, made possible in part due to the generosity of individuals like YOU, will help us thrive for many years to come.

With an increased demand for care for individuals needing memory support, a 20-suite secured neighborhood is being added to the first floor of the health care center. This neighborhood and the adjacent long-term care secured memory support neighborhood will each have access to a secured outdoor memory garden. The remaining 57 assisted living suites and 143 licensed skilled nursing accommodations will be relocated within the building. The focus will continue on high quality care and services.

Not So TrickyThe annual Tricky Tray fundraiser, which included raffling 300+ baskets, raised more than $48,000. These funds are used to purchase items which greatly benefit our residents, but are not included in the general budget. These items make life more comfortable (appealing cabinets and shower curtains for spa rooms and comforters for short-term rehab suites), more safe (wrist alarm upgrades and enhancements to the call bell system) and more enjoyable (21 new televisions for parlors and suites, Trenton Thunder baseball game tickets and parties and picnics with entertainers) for our residents.

Repositioning and Growth for the Future The retirement living cottage project kicked off in July 2017, and the first residents have begun moving onto campus. Construction of the 66 cottages should wrap up in fall 2018. To address a national trend of decreasing nursing home occupancy, Masonic Village has been renovating portions of the health care center and transforming 120 skilled nursing accommodations to best serve customers’ needs. This renovation will transition the space into 82 new retirement living rental apartments with one-bedroom, one-bedroom/den and two-bedroom options, which will also be completed in fall 2018.

In pursuit of our repositioning plan, the Masonic Charity Foundation experienced a transformative year in 2017. Construction on new cottages began with residents moving in starting in early 2018. Skilled nursing beds were reduced over the year, with work beginning to convert space to assisted living memory support and retirement living rental apartments.

Our operating revenue for 2017 decreased by approximately $5.6 million from 2016 levels, due to the reduction, on average, of 61 skilled nursing beds available over the same time period.

Overall, our operating expenses dropped $2.2 million. As a percentage of total operating expenses, salaries, wages and benefits remained constant at about 50 percent and decreased by approximately $1.5 million from 2016. This is reflective of our commitment to not lay off team members during the project to reposition our services. Other operating expenses decreased about $1.6 million, attributable to reduced nursing costs in areas such as therapy, pharmacy and food. These decreases were offset by a

loss of $779,000 in refinancing debt in 2017 and about $100,000 in increased interest cost, both associated with the project financing.

Thankfully, non-operating gains enabled us to carry out our mission; charitable giving for 2017 was approximately $528,000 more than 2016. Interest and dividend income remained essentially flat from 2016 to 2017, whereas realized gains of more than $6.8 million for 2017 contributed positively.

Our capital reinvestment during 2017 was significant – approximately $10.8 million spent on relevant projects, designed to renew our community and help ensure long-term success.

Masonic Charity Foundation is truly on a journey – one which ultimately positions us to provide quality services to Masons and their families regardless of their ability to pay, as their needs evolve, and for as long as they require. We are excited about the future of the Masonic Charity Foundation and our ability to serve individuals in the traditions of Freemasonry.

Community Impact Striving to use your gifts in the most efficient ways possible, while also fulfilling our goal of giving back to the local community, Masonic Village, Acacia Hospice and its team members implemented creative ideas in 2017:

Masonic Village at Burlington and Acacia Hospice focused efforts on older adults impacted by 2017’s Hurricane Harvey and Irma. Through coin/dollar jars, a “We Helped Elders Tree,” a farmer’s market, a bake sale and a basket/gift item raffle, team members raised $6,310 for the LeadingAge Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund. Along with New Jersey Masons, we also collected “necessities of life” items and paid to have them delivered to those affected by the hurricanes. Our efforts earned the Excellence in Community Service Award from LeadingAge NJ.Team members also partnered with Oaks Integrated Care and adopted 10 needy families in the community for the holidays. Residents wrapped all the gifts for the families. They raised money for the “Burlington County Times” Give-A-Christmas Fund. Residents crocheted scarves, and team members donated winter wear to the Christian Caring Center for the homeless.

“It’s not just the Masonic Village’s beautiful facilities and the many services that are offered to the residents – most of all, it’s the employees. They are personally dedicated, it seems, to each and every individual here.” ~ Catherine L., family member

With your support, patients facing terminal illnesses are given the comfort and care they and their families deserve. Acacia Hospice serves patients at Masonic Village, as well as those in communities throughout Burlington, Camden and Mercer counties.

Meeting the highest nationally recognized industry standards, which translates to providing the highest quality of care, Acacia Hospice earned accreditation through Community Health Accreditation Partner, Inc. (CHAP) in 2017.

The Bridge Program educates patients and their families about end-of-life care and options and offers community resources. Last year, 30 individuals benefitted from this program.

Acacia Hospice participates in the We Honor Veterans program and has achieved the highest ranking of Four Stars. The program’s goal is to ensure veterans have access to the highest quality end-of-life care.

To honor veteran patients, whether at Masonic Village, other facilities or their private home, Acacia team members ceremoniously drape an American flag over the veteran at the time of death and officially escort him or her to the waiting funeral home vehicle. After requesting flag donations from the public, Acacia received 40 flags. The outpouring of support has helped to ensure every soldier receives a proper farewell.
