“I Didn’t Know That……” With the recent release of books on Elias Ashmole (1617-1692), Sir Isaac Newton, and the forming of the Grand Lodge of London, specu-lation again arises about the relationship between the Royal Society and Freemasonry.

Born out of the Invisible College, the Royal Society was officially founded on 28 November 1660 when a group of academics decided to found “a Colledge for the Promoting of Physico-Mathematicall Ex-perimentall Learning”. Among the 12 academics during the formation at Gresham College, Sir Robert Moray (1608-1673) led the group and was most important in the Society receiving its charter. Moray, a Scot-tish Soldier, scientist and specialist in ballistics was received into Free-masonry in 1641, by the Lodge of Edinburgh and on the battlefield in England not far from the Scottish border.

Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite - Orient of Kentucky

Another of the earliest known ‘speculative” Freemasons, Elias Ashmole (1617-1692) was made a mason in a Lodge in Warrington, Lancashire, on October 16, 1646, according to page 15 of his diary. Only one other entry concerning Freemasonry occurs in Ashmole’s diary. This has led many to suppose that Ashmole had little interest in Masonry. However, it is believed that Ashmole intended to write a history of Freemasonry, but any notes were never found.

Ashmole was a scientist, alchemist, and the 35th member of the Royal Society and certainly one of the leading intellectuals of his time. Today, he is mostly remembered for the Ashmolean Museum, which he gifted to Oxford University in 1682. Known as the first scientific museum, and the first to open to members of the public, the Ashmolean Museum still exists and receives guests at no admission charge.

Sir Isaac Newton was not a Freemason, He was elected president of the Royal Society 1703-1727 during the formation of the London Grand Lodge in 1717. His was driven to unite theology and science, much as the Rosicrucian philosophy that was still prominent in his time. Like Ash-mole, he was obsessed to read everything he could on alchemy. He studied the subject of Solomon’s Temple relentlessly hoping to find something of the Divine. Alain Bauer (Isaac Newton’s Freemasonry) relates that the structure of Anderson’s Constitutions of 1723 follow Newton’s example in “Principia” as Definition, Axiom, Experimentation, and Proposition as follows: Definition: “A Mason is oblig’d by his tenor to obey the moral Law; Axiom: and if he rightly understands the Art, he will never be a stupid Atheist or an irreligious Libertine.Experimentation: But though in ancient Times Masons were charged in every Country to be of the Religion of that Country or Nation, whatever it was,Proposition: yet ‘tis now thought more expedient only to oblige them to that Religion in which all men agree, leaving their particular Opinions to themselves; that is, to be good Men and true, or Men of Honour and etc.”

It seems odd that James Anderson, a Presbyterian Minister and believer in Trinitarian doctrine, authored the above in the Grand Lodge Constitu-tions, but certainly John T. Desaguliers a Past Grand Master and also a minister, influenced Anderson’s thought on the Constitutions. At the time of Anderson’ Constitutions of 1723, it is believed that the Royal Society had 200 members, including about 40 Freemasons.

John T. Desaguliers (1683-1744) served as secretary to Newton promoting Newton’s philosophy as he traveled. Desaguilers was a member of the Royal Society (1714) and soon was elected curator. He was Chaplain to the Prince of Wales and served Grand Lodge as Grand Master in 1719. He was a leading force in Grand Lodge for many years. His dedication to the new Grand Lodge in every aspect is certainly unparalleled.

Several members of the Royal Society served as Grand Master in the first 10 years of the new Grand Lodge, including: John T. Desaguilers Grand Master-1719, Royal Society-1714; Duke of Montague GM-1721, RS-1718; Duke of Buccleuch GM-1723, RS-1724; Duke of Richmond GM-1724, RS-1724; Earl of Abercorn GM-1725, RS-1715; Lord Coleraine GM-1727, RS-1735; and fourteen more before the United Grand Lodge of England was formed. …………What do you think??

These books “The Magus of Freemasonry-The Mysterious Life of Elias Ashmole” author Tobias Churton; “Exploring Early Grand Lodge Free-masonry” editor Christopher B. Murphy; “Isaac Newton’s Freemasonry” author Alain Bauer; are available at MLMA – Covington.

Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite - Orient of Kentucky

Greetings Brothers,

Though July and August are periods set aside for non-activity in the Valley of Covington, we have been anything but quiet this year. Planning, preparation and hard work continue as we begin to make the necessary changes to bring the Valley of Covington back to the level we once knew. We are completing those committee assignments that will be needed to get us where we should be and the degree teams are working hard to make our rituals meaningful and informative while we also make necessary improvements to the auditorium to enhance the meaning of the degrees. Improved lighting and sound will enable the candidates to see and understand a lot more about the rituals we perform. We have plans to present the non-obligatory degrees more consistently and in the way they were intended.

With that thought in mind, let me shed some light on the things to come. At the October two day reunion, the following will occur. The fourth and eighth degrees will be conferred on Friday night. Saturday, we will start the morning conferring

the fourteenth and the eighteenth degrees. I am excited and pleased to announce that a Valley of Louisville degree team will travel to our Valley and present the twentieth degree Saturday afternoon! We hope this will be the start of a trend in the Orient of Kentucky where we will get to witness other presentations by other Valleys and reciprocate by having our degree teams travel to other Valleys to present our work. The thirtieth and thirty second degrees will finish out the degree work. We are still working on adding some new things to finish out the night. Stayed tuned!

Beginning in January of 2020, it is expected that you will be able to observe the conferral of all degrees at least once every three years. We have also started Masonic presentations and lectures at our stated meetings and we have plans to move our stated meetings and reunions throughout the Valley to accommodate our members in other areas of the valley. For example, the Spring one day reunion which is typically held in Ashland, will be held in Pikeville in the Spring of 2020 with plans for following reunions to be held in Paintsville, Morehead, Somerset and elsewhere as we find suitable and workable locations. In other words, we are going to bring the Valley to its members. We have a committee that is working diligently on the Master Craftsman program. Presently, they meet on the first Friday of the month in the library at the Temple. We are off to a slow start with just a few members showing up but we know as people experience more, it will grow. The committee is also going to expand that program by enabling members in other areas of the Valley to remotely attend the presentations. Exciting times!

Another big change for us will be the stated meetings. Currently, we are dark in January, February, July and August. Beginning in January of next year, 2020, we will only be dark in January and July. There is no reason why we should quit being Masons four months out of the year. Having said that, I am excited to announce that our Fundraising Committee will be providing some entertaining events during the year which will, we hope, supplement our meetings. In January, we will hold a dinner and magic show at the Temple. This will be a family event open to the public. More to come on that. We are also exploring a bus trip to the House of the Temple in Washington D.C. It is anticipated that our annual car show will continue but will relocate to the Morehead area.

Valley of Covington

These are exciting times in the Valley with lots of changes, new events and more Masonry! It is also going to require more help. If you are interested in making all of this happen, I encourage you to contact me or a member of a com-mittee. For example, several of our degrees have parts that are non-speaking or involve very few sentences. However, they enhance the purpose of that degree extensively. Therefore, they are important. Fundraising requires participation also. There will be events held in your area. Maybe you can help. My phone number is 859-431-5250.

In the bond of brotherhood,Ray Murphy, 33° Elect - Personal Representative, Valley of Covington

MWGM Gary Rose, DGM Geary Laird, GSW Ernest Jackson, Bro. Derek Gastineau, Sec. Lincoln Lodge #60, GJW James Gibson, DDGM Dist. 21 Mark Rose, Grand Sec. Don Yankey PGM, with Master Joseph Gilliand celebrating Bro. Esthel Cooper’s 80th year!

Lincoln Lodge #60Brother Esthel Cooper was presented his 80 year apron and service pin at his home on September 19, 2019. Brother Esthel Cooper joined Freemasonry when he was 21 years old, and also served in the Armed Forces. When asked what his secret to a long life was, he responded,”Good neighbors and good friends.” He remains active in his community and at 101 years of age still performs most of the work on his property.

This marks the first time in the history of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky that an 80 Year Apron and pin has ever been presented.

Congratulations from the Craft on attaining this milestone!
