Grand Master’s MessageGreetings Brothers:

By the time you read this article, the month of February will be behind us and we will be looking increasingly towards warmer weather and then springtime.

First, I am taking this opportunity to encourage you to positively impress a can-didate with quality ritual work. Our candidate will only have one opportunity to experience the very best we can offer and it is our duty to provide it in a beauti-ful and appropriate manner free from distractions. Please give our candidate a meaningful experience as he travels the path we have all walked before. As a reminder of our purpose as a fraternity, I encourage you to participate in the ritual competition to be held this year as previously addressed in the Masonic Home Journal. Let your light shine by doing your very best in this competition. All of our brothers in Kentucky will be proud of you!

Next, I appreciate very much those who were able to help make history this year on All Mason’s Day at the Kentucky Capital. We are very grateful for those of our elected officials and brothers who helped schedule the day begin-ning in the Capitol Rotunda and concluding with a tiled meeting in the Capitol itself. This meeting was the first in the history of our Commonwealth where such a meeting was held in the Chambers of the House of Representatives and I am very happy to have personally welcomed a new member of our fraternity!

Brothers, with the passing of our good friend and Brother Garry Terry, Grand Junior Deacon, it became necessary to fill his office. On Saturday, 1/18/2020, I installed Billy Joe Martin, Jr. to serve the Grand Lodge and the Craft as the Grand Junior Deacon for the remainder of the term. We will all miss Brother Terry and we thank and welcome Brother Martin.

Next, I thank all of the brothers who helped organize and manage the Confer-ence of Grand Masters of North America held in Louisville this year. This was an opportunity to showcase our beautiful Commonwealth of Kentucky to brothers who attended from across the United States and several foreign juris-dictions. Much business of the Grand Lodges of these jurisdictions was ad-dressed at this meeting and everyone was delighted with the southern hospital-ity that Kentucky Masons showed!

In conclusion, I want to recognize you, the Craft of Kentucky, as the very best men that our communities across the state have to offer. You consistently show our public that Masons are caring people who believe deeply in God, country, and brotherly love. I applaud you in the grandest fashion and am proud to call you my Masonic Brothers! May God continue to bless our great fraternity and may God Bless America! Brothers, as always, I encourage you to BE THAT MASON THAT MAKES A DIFFERENCE!

Fraternally Thine,

Honoring Our Veterans

Brother John Phillips with the Veterans Affairs Committee has come up with another way to say “Thank You” to the United Stated Armed Forces Veterans, who have honor-ably served our great nation.

We are asking for the collection of “trial size toiletry items” to be donated by the lodges and brought to the dis-trict meetings where they will be collected, organized, and dispersed to the inpatient Veterans of VA Hospitals within the state. Any brother attending the district meetings is encouraged to donate items also.

Such toiletry items include comb, shampoo, conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, denture cleaning tablets, shaving cream, razor, after shave, body wash, lotion, pow-der and deodorant. When the inpatient Veteran receives these collected items, a small sticker will be attached to each container or bag stating, “Donated by the Grand Lodge of Kentucky, F&AM”.

I ask for your support in this great venture. Feel free to contact Brother John Phillips if you have any questions or concerns. This is short notice, please spread the word. Thanks

Re: Changes to Masonic Homes of Kentucky, Inc.

Articles of Incorporation

From: M.W.G.M. Geary Laird, Grand Master and Board Member;

Harold E. Armstrong, PGM, Board Chairman

Masonic Homes Kentucky Board of Directors, including the Grand Lodge Officers, have been

thoughtfully updating the Articles of Incorporation. We will ask the members of the corporation

(Individual Life Members, Lodges and Appendant Bodies holding Life Memberships) to vote on

these proposed changes at the same time as the annual election of Board members and certify

the election during the Annual Meeting at Grand Communication on October 19, 2020 at 1 pm.

There are three reasons for the changes:

1. Cleanup

• We want to clarify and cleanup, not change substance.

• There are many instances of adding “F. & A.M.,” deleting a “the,” or simply inserting

a number to clarify information that exists elsewhere in the document.

2. Modernizing

• We want to provide an accurate description of the organization’s current mission.

• The current document addresses “orphans and widows.” The last orphan left in 1989.

• Today, we serve Masons and their wives or widows in active lifestyle, senior living communities.

3. Equality and Fairness

• We think all Kentucky Lodges are valued at the same high level.

• We think all Lodges should have the same voting privileges, just like the Grand Lodge

Communication.

• We want all Masonic areas in the Commonwealth to have equality in determining the corporate

governance in the charity of Kentucky Freemasonry. Our Masonic Homes are the oldest in the

world and we need to work collectively in their support.

• We want more Lodges and members to be involved at all levels of Masonic Homes.

Should you wish to review a copy of these proposed changes prior to the ballots being mailed in the

fall, please email your request to [email protected]. We appreciate your interest and will

gladly mail you a copy.

We look forward to seeing you at your District Meeting where we will provide further

explanation for the changes being sought.

You are cordially and fraternally invited to be present at the Scottish Rite Temple, Brook and Gray Streets, Louisville, Kentucky, and partici-pate with us in these sublime ceremonies.

This reunion is named for our Illustrious Broth-er Carlos Eldon Curry, 33° and is the first time we are trying this format. Our hopes are that by moving the degree work to those two Saturdays and our various Stated Meeting nights we will have better attendance from the Craft at both the reunions and at our Stated Meetings. To those Brothers who are not yet Scottish Rite Masons, you need to know that we hold our business meetings on the Lodge of Perfection, therefore by completing the degree work at the March 7 reunion you will be eligible to participate in the following AASR Stated Meetings.

Note that at our stated meeting on March 26, we had originally scheduled our Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal. Due to the Scot-tish Rite Workshop falling on that date we have rescheduled the Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal to the Stated Meeting on April 9. Please update your calendar.

In addition to the Reunion being held on March 7, 2020, that evening, at 6:30 p.m., we will be hosting a dinner and talk with scenery expert Wendy Waszut-Barrett. This is open to every-one. See the flyer on the right for additional de-tails and call the office (502) 584-6185 to RSVP.

Opening the Door to Scottish Rite Scenery in Louisville

An evening with Wendy Waszut-Barrett

Wendy Waszut-Barrett, PhD, is an author, artist, and historian, spe-cializing in the restoration and replication of nineteenth and twen-tieth century scenery for the stage. For thirty years, her passion has remained the preservation of theatrical heritage and the continued training of artists in historical scene painting techniques.

On Saturday, March 7, Dr. Waszut-Barrett will present the history of the Louisville Scottish Rite stage settings within the context of American theatre history, examining six historic scenes. She will describe how the Louisville Scottish Rite scenery collection was de-signed and painted, detailing what makes these settings so special.

Past publications include the award-winning book, The Santa Fe Scottish Rite Temple: Freemasonry, Architecture and Theatre (Mu-seum of New Mexico Press, 2018) and numerous international ar-ticles. Dr. Waszut-Barrett speaks internationally about the evolu-tion and significance of Scottish Rite scenery within the context of American theatre, trying to raise the general public’s awareness of these rare collections. Dr. Waszut-Barrett is the president of Historic Stage Services, LLC, a company specializing in historic stages and how to make them work for today’s needs.

Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite - Orient of Kentucky

Greetings Brethren,

Here it is March and the signs of Spring are beginning to show. You can smell it in the air, you can hear it in the sounds of the birds as they have begun their yearly calls in search of a suitable mate and you can see it as the plant life prepares to explode in new growth. All de-signed by the Grand Architect. So it is with the Valley of Covington. We are coming out of a busy and progressive winter and are on the

verge of a new and expanding year in the life of our beloved Rite guided by the hands of Him who makes all things possible.

We started the New Year with a new twist. We held the first ever Valley of Covington “Dinner and Magic Show”. There were approximately 160 brothers, their wives, children and friends who ventured from all over the Valley to enjoy a wonderful dinner and then watch two of our brothers perform a very intriguing and professional exhibit of magical and mystifying illusions. The adults were impressed and the children were in complete awe! Our thanks to brothers, Artie Kidwell and Billy Hall, for presenting us with an impressive show and good start to the year. Our patrons had a great time and we raised some much needed funds for the Valley. We are already making plans to have them return next year. Hope you don’t miss them and again, our grateful kudos to our very committed brothers.

In February, we brought “Light” to a dark Valley with the reintroduc-tion of the monthly stated meeting held at the Covington Scottish Rite Temple. It is another example of our Valley “coming to life”.

Another sign is the one day reunion to be exemplified on Saturday, March 7th in Pikeville. We said we were going to travel and you can’t go much further and be in the Valley. This event will be held at Thom-as C. Cecil Lodge. Coffee and donuts at 8 am. The 4th, 14th, 18th, 30th and 32nd degrees will be conferred beginning at 9 am. Hotel ac-commodations have been arranged at the Hilton Gardens just a couple blocks from the Lodge. Hospitality will be provided there on Friday after 5 pm. You are cordially invited to come on down and share in Scottish Rite Masonry. We will have our stated meeting on the third Friday, March 20th, as usual in Covington. If you have not been to the Temple recently, you have missed other signs of our rebirth within the physical structure of our magnificent building. There are lots of other things in the works. Come join us.

Valley of CovingtonApril will start the Valley blooming with the resurgence of the KCCH Club annual meeting and elections. President Dave Casessa has an-nounced that we will again travel, this time to Jenny Wiley State Park on Friday, April 3rd and Saturday, April 4th for a family invited fun time. All members of the KCCH and 33rd Degree clubs will be able to share in a fun filled weekend with their Brothers. There will be hospitality and fun filled events on Friday night. The annual meeting and election of new officers will start at 2 pm on Saturday followed by more fun that night. There are also numerous sights and history to view while you are in the area so come travel with us and spend some time with old friends.

May 15th and 16th will bring the two day reunion to our Covington Temple. In addition to the obligatory degrees, Brother Keith Dreier will direct and Eric Creech will assist with the conferral of the 31st degree which is a very deep and thought provoking degree. They will also present this degree to the members of the Valley of Louisville on June 13th. We are very proud of the members who confer the work of this degree.

July will see us travel again. We have moved the Scottish Rite car show scheduled for Saturday, July 11th to Morehead. We are still plan-ning to visit Washington D.C. in July and have accepted a request from our Brothers from the Valley of Huntington to join us. More to come on that trip. How about a Beauty Pageant in August? Talk about wild life in bloom! Come join us.

Covington Scottish Rite “I Didn’t Know That……”

“The Lost Symbol”, the fast paced Masonic thriller written by Dan Brown, is expected to hit the television screens as a mini-series, on NBC. Although at this writing the release date is not known nor the cast named, NBC has committed to produce the series with Director Ron Howard (Imagine Television Studios). Howard directed the big screen hits “The Da Vinci Code”, “Angels and Demons” and “Infer-no” which starred Tom Hanks as the Harvard ‘symbologist’, Professor Robert Langdon, netting a total gross of one and a half billion dollars worldwide. The title of the NBC mini-series will be named “Lang-don”, after the main character. Why the “The Lost Symbol” was not a movie, is unknown.

Unlike the book, timewise, the “Langdon” series will take place prior to the “Da Vinci Code”, with a young Professor Langdon as the main character. All the action in the original book took place in Washington DC, noting various points of interest including: the U.S. Capitol build-ing, and the House of the Temple.

“The Lost Symbol” book opens with Professor Langdon being sum-moned to the Capitol Building to present a lecture, and finds an object that has esoteric symbols, which Langdon must interpret and pursue to find his kidnapped friend and mentor, Peter Solomon, a high rank-ing mason. All this of course, leads ‘symbologist’ Langdon into the ‘secret’ Masonic world around Washington, D.C. and finding himself confronting a tattooed villain.

Many liberties with so-called “Masonic influence” were taken by Brown’s novel, “The Lost Symbol” however at least it was not an anti-masonic read. One must remember that it was only a novel. Whether the television series will remain true to the book, remains to be seen. It should be fun!! -------------What do you think?
