A NEW YEAR’S PRAYER

O God of new beginnings

and wonderful surprises,

thank You for the gift of a

New Year. May it be a

time of grace for me, a time to grow in

faith and love, a time to renew my

commitment to following Your Son, Jesus.

May it also be a year of blessing for me.

A time to cherish my family and friends,

a time to renew my efforts at work, and

a time to embrace my faith more fully.

Please walk with me, every day of this new

year. Let the Light of Christ shine through

me, in spite of my weaknesses and failings.

Above all, may I remember this year that

I am a pilgrim on the sacred path to You.

AMEN.

CATHOLIC NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS January 1st is here again, and it’s time to make your annual New Year’s resolutions. Every Catholic

should add to their list a few spiritual resolutions

designed to help you walk more strongly on their journey of faith. Let the freshness of the New Year

be your impetus to make new strides in your walk with God! There is no time but the present! Here

are some ideas.

Make more time for spiritual reading Share your Catholic faith with others Hold doors for other people, say hello,

introduce yourself to someone you see all the time but whose name you don’t know

Be on the lookout for all the good things

happening in your life and talk about them with family and friends

Ask for forgiveness in a broken relationship

Build up familial relationships with no cell

phone meals

Make a monthly confession

Pray a daily Rosary

Pray for victims of religious persecution

Make good stewardship of your time, talent and

treasure part of your lifestyle

These are just suggestions. Ask the Lord to help

you make the kind of spiritual resolution that will make you both happy and blessed in 2020.

My Dear Parishioners,

Born around 340 AD, St. Ambrose was Governor of Milan in the Holy Roman Empire. During his term as Governor, the Bishop of Milan died. Though Ambrose was studying the Catholic Faith, he had not been Baptized. Knowing there would be conflict between Catholics and Arians (people who did not believe in Christ’s divinity), he attended the election of the new Bishop and spoke, only to have the people ask Ambrose to become Bishop. As Bishop, he was instrumental in ending the Arian heresy in Milan. His preaching also helped convert St. Augustine. In the following letter, St. Ambrose gives us good advice about how to let Mary, our Mother, direct, guide, and inspire us in the New Year.

Peace and All Good, Monsignor Douglas J. Mathers

My Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

How beautiful, how awesome it is that our God sent His own Son to dwell among us, as one of

us, to heal the breach between human and divine! And how tragic it is when frail humanity fails to

appreciate this gift.

In my day, the followers of a man named Arius did not believe in Christ’s divinity. They

demanded that we hand over two churches for their use, but I refused to do so. In these difficult

times, it was even more important for the followers of Christ to stand united. The mystery and gift

of the Incarnation is that Christ came for all. In every age, the language, customs and liturgical

practices that separate the faithful are less important than the faith that unites us. While we cannot

condone heresy, we must approach all those we meet with the heart of Our Lord, Who treated even

sinners and tax collectors as beloved children of God.

The Virgin Mother provides us an example to emulate. She who bore the Savior understands

the weight of an uncertain future. She, the humblest of women, found herself called to serve her

Lord in a way that seemed impossible. Yet she embraced the call, both the gift of birth and the

sacrifice of the Cross. She trusted in the sure and certain hope of salvation promised of old. Let us

trust in the equally certain promise of Our Lord’s return. For God can use all situations and all

people to effect His plan, even those who seem the least likely candidates. Witness myself, a Roman

Governor nominated as Bishop of Milan even before I was Baptized!

In times filled with conflict and in all times, endeavor to embrace the same patience and hope

demonstrated by the Virgin in the days before and after our Lord’s Nativity. May the peace of

Christ dwell always in your hearts.

Your Brother in Christ,

Ambrose

Epiphany Proclamation

2020

In ancient times before calendars were

common, most people did not know the dates

for the upcoming Liturgical year. On Epiphany

Sunday, the upcoming dates were "proclaimed". After the singing of the Gospel, the Priest, in

keeping with the ancient practice of Holy Church, announced from the pulpit the moveable feasts

of the current year according to this formula:

Know, dear brothers and sisters, that, as we

have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God’s mercy we announce to you also the joy of His Resurrection, Who is our Savior.

On the Twenty-Sixth Day of February will

fall Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten Season.

On the Twelth Day of April you will

celebrate with Joy Easter Day, the Paschal Feast of our Lord Jesus Christ.

On the Twenty-First Day of May will be the

Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.

On the Thirty-First Day of May the Feast of

Pentecost.

On the Fourteenth Day of June, the Feast of

the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.

On the Twenty-Ninth Day of November, the

First Sunday of Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to Whom is honor and glory for ever and ever.

Amen.
