WELCOME TO ST. MARK CATHOLIC CHURCH!

(910) 392-0720 Iglesia Católica de San Marcos

YouTube: St. Mark Catholic Church, Wilmington, NC ¡Mira todas nuestras misas en linea!

For this Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time,

we continue with the Gospel of Mark. Recall that

last week, we heard Jesus chastise his disciples for

their argument about who among them was the

greatest. Jesus taught them that the greatest

among them will be those who serve the least ones. In

today’s Gospel, the disciple John questions Jesus about

an unknown exorcist who was driving out demons in

Jesus’ name. Previously in Mark's Gospel, Jesus healed a

boy whom the disciples had been unable to heal. John’s

question is further evidence that the disciples have not

yet grasped Jesus’ words to them. They continue to

compare themselves to others who seem to have

greater healing powers, and they do not want to share

the power of Jesus’ name with others.

Today, the demon possession describes an exorcism.

Exorcism was a common practice in first-century

Palestine. Some people had the power to heal the

symptoms of possession. One of the strategies used

was to invoke the name of a person or figure who was

believed to have the power to heal.

The disciples observed that the unknown exorcist

invoked Jesus’ name and was successful in his healing

efforts. This unknown healer recognized the power of

Jesus’ name, yet he was not a follower of Jesus. In his

reply to his disciples, Jesus acknowledges that deeds of

faith can precede the words of faith. He also teaches

that the disciples should not be reluctant to share

Jesus’ healing powers with others.

Later in this Gospel, Jesus teaches us not to create

obstacles for those who are just beginning to have faith

but to encourage even the smallest signs of faith. The

Greek word used here for sin also connotes “stumbling”

or “causing scandal.” In vivid terms, Jesus teaches his

disciples the consequences to those who would put

obstacles before people who are on the road to faith.

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Greg

Para este Vigésimo Sexto Domingo del Tiempo

Ordinario, continuamos con el Evangelio de

Marcos.

Hurricane Ida Relief and Collection Next weekend, October 2-3, we will have a second collection for

St. Stephen Church & School in New Orleans, LA in lieu of Capital

Improvements. St. Stephen withstood substantial roof damage to

seeking help with repairs and recovery efforts. If you wish to sup-

port this collection, there will be a special basket in the Gathering

Space. Thank you for continuing to pray for our brothers and sis-

26th Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48

Listen! The wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out, and the cries of the

harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts. (James 5:4)

Living the Word: In today’s Gospel, the language we hear and read is rather disturbing but Jesus is

making it quite clear what one needs to do to stay close to God. The examples Jesus gives us are very

extreme but He wants us to be very careful about every action we take.

So gather your family together and ask everyone what it means to follow Jesus. Is it easy or

hard? Whom can we turn to for help when we are tempted to stray from God? God of course!

We have the beautiful Sacrament of Reconciliation to ask God for help to always thrive to do better. It gives us the op-

portunity to examine our lives as we think about how Jesus lived his life. As a family, consider coming together to church

to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Questions of the Week

Child: Could a poor person who is wise be richer in a way than a foolish person who has many things? Why?

Adult: What are the three most important values motivating your daily decisions?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: This week there are SO MANY SAINT FEAST DAYS! I couldn’t decide which one so here

they are! Do some research with your family and let us know who you picked and what you find out about them.

September 27th - Today is the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul. There is a large

organization that has one main goal - to help others. It has members all over

the world, and it is called the St. Vincent de Paul Society!

September 29th - Today is the feast day of the archangels - Saints Michael,

Gabriel, and Raphael.

September 30th - Happy Feast Day to Saint Jermone - a man who spent his life

trying to know God better.

October 1st - Feast of the feast day of St. Therese, who is also known as the

Little Flower. She is also known as St. Therese of the Child Jesus.

October 2nd - Feast of the Holy Guardians Angels

Learning the Sign of the Cross Our first graders created these special crafts to help them

learn how to make the Sign of the Cross!

We are in need of substitutes at the school! If interested in helping, please

contact the principal, Tripp Burton, at [email protected].

New Air Purifiers St. Mark now has 60 new air purifiers to help keep the air

in our classrooms and offices fresh and clean! This is in

addition to the 28 commercial air purifiers that were

added to all our HVAC units last year.

Fun in Science Class Mrs. Peters’ 5th grade class science students are learning

about force and motion. As part of their unit, they ob-

served and sketched simple machines of various toys to

prepare the design and building of their own toys. What

a fun way to learn science!
