3 OLS Bulletin, 12/31/2017

Dear Our Lady of Sorrows Parish and Friends, On behalf of the Boodle Brigade, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for the outpouring of generosity and love you gave to our U.S. Soldiers this Holiday Season. With the help of the White Plains Community, The Woman’s Club of WP, the town of Stony Brook, LI (my sister, Bea Ann Swift Foster’s town) and most importantly, Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, we were able to ship 170 packages to troops in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. We sent Christmas boodle to soldiers in 4 different units in Afghanistan, to Turkey, Japan and our packages were air dropped onto the USS Roosevelt aircraft carrier, which is part of a fleet carrying fighter jets near Korea. We also had our gifts sent to 5 United States domestic bases. We reached men and women Soldiers, Rangers, Special Ops, Fighter Pilots, Engineers and Para-Rescue soldiers who parachute into enemy territory to provide medical help to the wounded. Most importantly, our gifts went to soldiers who are on what is called the “tip of the spear”- they are engaged in fighting daily and have few comforts. One soldier was grateful to receive a pillow, as he had not had one for 3 months. O.L.S. school children sent fantastic letters and we sent boodle to 12 White Plains residents and friends who currently serve in the military. The majority of packages were distributed by Officers for their soldiers on Christmas Eve. I do know that one unit opened the holiday decorations and were thrilled. There are some bulk items remaining that will go out in January, per Boodle Brigade request. We raised over $4,000 which was used for flat rate and bulk shipping and to add needed gifts and items to the packages. Leftover funds are ready to send more boodle out in January and to send squeeze pops to units during the summer heat. If you are aware of a soldier to whom you’d like a gift package sent, contact me at [email protected] or 914-400-5772. See the list (in the next column) of the many items that this great community contributed to these brave soldiers who will be away from home for Christmas. I know they will be grateful. You wonderful parishioners can relish the knowledge that you made many soldiers’ holidays a lot more joyful, because he/she knows that here at home, you are thinking about them and that you appreciate them. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and God Bless You All and our United States Military. Sincerely, Diane Martino (parishioner)

A PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph

“They took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout awaiting the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. He came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regards to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying: ‘Now Master you can let your servant go in peace.’” How often we have attended a baptism, as parent, godparent, big brother or sister, relative or friend. Some assumed the role of Joseph and Mary, others that of Simeon, or Anna who prayed. Whatever our role, we are called to recognize the special presence of the Christ as they did. Joseph protected, Mary reflected, Simeon prayed and praised. We do too. Pope Francis in his exhortation ‘The Joy of Love’ provides a terrific teaching as we bring one year to a close and turn the page to a new year of grace. He says, ‘Family prayer is a special way of expressing and strengthening this paschal faith. A few minutes can be found each day to come together before the living God to tell him of our worries, to ask for the needs of our family, to pray for someone experiencing difficulty, to ask for help in showing love, to give thanks for life and for its blessings and to ask Our Lady to protect us beneath her maternal mantle. With a few simple words, this moment of prayer can do immense good for our families.’ As we hear of all the new year’s resolutions, may we see this as our priority.
