Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord April 14, 2019

In reflecting on the Gospel reading for the celebration of Palm Sunday of the Lord's Passion I was struck by something that I had never noticed before. In the Gospel account of the Lord's entry into Jerusalem, which begins the liturgy, Saint Luke tells us that Jesus sought out a colt on which no one had ever sat to ride into the holy city. In the Passion narrative, at the heart of the liturgy, Luke ends his account by telling us that Jesus was laid in a tomb in which no one had yet been buried. It was the first time for the colt and a first time for the tomb. To me, this was an invitation to enter into Holy Week as if it was the first time we were hearing the story of Jesus' last supper with his Apostles, his betrayal and trial, his death on the cross, his burial and finally his glorious resurrection from the dead. To engage the celebration of the paschal mystery - the death and resurrection of Christ - with a beginner's mind invites us to be present to the saving act of Jesus Christ in a way that allows us to experience it anew. It invites us to look for things we have never seen before in the sacred rituals of the church and to listen for sacred words that we never heard proclaimed before, speaking to our hearts and souls. Holy Week is not remembering what Jesus did for us over two thousand years ago. The kind of remembering we do in these sacred days is meant to make Christ's sacrifice present to us in the here and now. It is an invitation to surrender to the woundrous love that Jesus Christ showed us on the cross, a love that is stronger than death. We are able to experience all of this in a new way because who we are today is not the same as yesterday. Hopefully these forty days of Lent have formed us a little more fully into a better version of ourselves, bringing us to the threshhold of the Sacred Triduum - Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter - different than when Lent began. We have also been made different by the life experiences that we have had, the trials and tribulations, along with the successes and triumphs that have helped define who we are in this moment. We bring this new version of our self to Jesus Christ who in this time and in this place once again washes our feet and feeds us with His body and blood. Jesus invites us anew to embrace and to kiss His cross, the instrument of our salvation, and to share in the power of His rising from the dead. As a people baptized in Christ and formed at the font of rebirth we renew the promises we made to live, move and to have our being in Him. And so my friends let us be companions on the journey with Jesus, stepping into Holy Week with minds, hearts and souls open to what God will reveal to us in Christ about how He loves us as His sons and daughters - right here and right now.

Welcoming Ministry - Welcome Cards

Last weekend, the Welcoming Ministry implemented a new initiative to welcome new parishioners and visitors to our parish. Located at the three entrances to the church as well as in the Ministry Center are postcards of welcome, in both English and Spanish, where you can indicate whether you are interested in joining the parish, are a visitor, are interested in becoming Catholic or have a prayer request. Upon completion of the card, place it in the collection basket or drop it off in the Parish Office at the Ministry Center for processing.

NAMETAG WEEKEND Nametag Weekend returns April 27-28. As always, we need assistance with welcoming our parishioners and distributing nametags at the greeting tables for masses throughout the weekend. Please contact Kathleen McMorrow at (732) 742-9049 to serve as a volunteer at the mass you plan to attend. We welcome members of our youth to assist with nametag weekend to earn volunteer hours.

COME REFLECT AND SHARE

Members of the Pastoral Council will be hosting a series of discernment sessions for parishioners on several topics over the next few months in response to your thoughtful comments to our Parish Survey. The first topic in this series is for those parishioners who find themselves spiritually affected by the clergy abuse scandal that has permeated the Catholic Church. These meetings will be hosted by members of the Pastoral Council and will provide an open and honest forum to discuss this issue. The dates of the sessions are below and space is limited to 12 people per group offered on a first-come, first served basis, and more will be added as the need arises.

Monday evening, April 15, 7:30 - 9:00 pm

Saturday morning, May 4, 10:00 - 11:30 am

Wednesday morning, May 8: 10:00 - 11:30 am

Wednesday evening, May 22, 7:30 - 9:00 pm If you are interested in participating in any of these sessions, please reach out to any member of the Parish Council (partial list below):

Stewardship

“They took hold of a certain Cyrenian, named Simon, who was coming in from the country; and after

laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus.”

Whether Simon entered willingly and compassionately into this service or whether he took up the Cross of Christ with a grudge, we don’t know. What we do know is this: Simon did his part faithfully. He stayed near to Christ, carrying the Cross until our Lord reached Golgotha, the site of His crucifixion. We also know that Simon’s family were among the first of the early Christians. Staying near to Christ, embracing the Cross (quite literally), transformed his life and the life of his family. Where will you place yourself this week? Keeping your distance from all the pain and suffering Christ endured? Or close by, staying near to Him like Simon did? It is when we go near to Christ that we can be transformed by Him. It is by embracing the crosses in our lives, stewarding them well rather than trying to run from them, that we become His true disciples.

UNIQUE SERVICE OPPORTUNITY

Did you know that there is a cloistered Carmelite community living close to our parish at 189 Madison Ave, Morristown? The Monastery of the Most Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel was founded in Morristown more than 90 years ago. The 22 nuns living there are either in formation or have professed their final vows. They seek union with God through a consecrated life of prayer and self-sacrifice. The Monastery is independent of the Diocese of Paterson, meaning the sisters' material needs are TOTALLY provided through God's providence. This is where our unique service opportunity comes in. Can you donate food staples and basic supplies like laundry detergent and toilet tissue? Can you provide financial assistance for healthcare costs, utilities and repairs? Can you volunteer time toward making repairs? Are you a skilled trade worker who would be willing to coordinate and complete a service project? Whether it is short-term, one-time or sometimes - there are so many possible avenues for our parishioners to explore as a way to help the Carmelite sisters. Please contact Hattie Alexander, a Lay Carmelite, at 973-349-2118 to get started.
